I like the idea :) like the engraving in Alienware laptops. Sadly the price is not so good considering the audio quality.

It's nice you can choose an emoji but for me it's a step back in the engraving feature... we can't mix emojis with regular text and lowercase text is not allowed anymore?!? You could write much more fun ASCII art previously than right now..

anything to make a dime, not sure if the engraving is "free" or not but there will be some who will buy a new one just to get it. "the can't live without Apple's latest crowd"
Not knowing the answer, yet making a negative comment about users and Apple. Welcome to Macrumors these days.

Ha ha......deeper into the sewer of lack of taste and sheer stupidity. But, masses will dig into their piggy banks and purchase this option, making Tim and others richer.
Selecting a free option, yeah stupid people. There are 8 sets of AirPods in my house, mix of old and new. Pain in the ass to keep track of the owners. Nobody wanted engraving but this works for us when replacing/upgrading.

This seems kinda cheesy and un-apple-like. It's a good idea though.

uh, I present to you, Animoji. Apple does cheesy.

Who stole your joy? It is simply printing text on a thing to help clarify that your item is not friend's item. Jeeze.

Who stole your reading glasses? Text has always been possible. The printing of emojis is the wonderful new initiative.

Nice to have options, but engraving always kills the resale value. On the upside, if your AirPods are stolen at least you will be able to identify your case, assuming no one else takes the 💩 emoji...

Actually, I think engraving w/ a emoji would be more resale-able than text. You could have either "Boris" or a dog emoji. Dog emoji is more transferrable.

And like with used car sales, sometimes unique options pull in a higher price, though for a much smaller set of interested buyers. "Oh, it has ventilated seats? Man, those would be great in this heat." Or, "oh, it's exterior color is bright green? yeah, maybe not..."

So this is the actual state of the society...

This is what Steve meant when he said "bicycle for the mind".

jajaja Really? Did he really said that?

How about offering a black pair instead??

They won’t. I think they’ve made that clear now being we have three versions of the AirPods available and only one color offered in ‘white’. Apple could’ve offered black AirPods when they first launched in December 2016, they chose not to. I think the reason being, is when you see the AirPods, the white color exemplifies it’s an ‘Apple product’ that has that traditional color we’ve always seen.

But if you’re really set on having black AirPods, you can pay a small fortune to have them painted white Colorware.

Free, as in no extra cost to the consumer, to have it engraved. Can't believe I have to explain the word "free"

And yes the engraving is free to the consumer. Might cost apple a few cents, but they'll will be those that will have to have it and buy a new air pod case
I know what free means. I don't know why you put it in quotes. It's a free service Apple is offering to their customers. People like you need an excuse to complain about anything and everything.
