Sure they could.

But they don't have to (people will either pay it or go third-party) so why would they?

I mean HP, Dell, Lenovo and others could charge a hell of a lot less for their workstation RAM and storage, too, but they don't for the same reasons.

Shareholders would not be happy with lower revenues dropping the value of their holdings and it's all about "Shareholder Value" nowadays.
Yes to all of the above! :)

But Apple is not a company that pursues shareholder value at the expense of all else. Apple pursues clean energy, makes/matches charitable donations and values diversity (too much or too little of those, depending on one’s point of view. And perhaps most importantly, customer satisfaction is through the roof on Apple products—despite what a couple dozen, a couple hundred or even a couple thousand of naysayers, members of the Apple hate club or trolls think or say.

Oh, a special shout out to the tough-lovers who claim to criticize Apple only out of an abundance of “concern”, because they care so much about Apple. They’re always eager to post how many dozens of products they buy, have and used to recommend—but no longer do—because beancounter Tim Apple only cares about profit and Apple’s lost their way, doesn’t innovate anymore and/or doesn’t make them the product they want

junk idea to put 8TB on a MP. Dont apole fan guys ever network their work stations?
-very very few users will ever find a purpose for that much local storage

I assume a professional environment here. Can you figure the risk of loosing that much data. why risk it. create a local daily sand box. Perform the work function. Restore under revision control into the company network. Let the admin worry about backups etc.

I just ordered my second Mac Pro. First off, I am connected to an Apple employee, so I get a discounted price and thus, my comments won't apply to everyone. On this second Mac Pro, I took the 8TB. I use a lot of sound libraries in my work. These are primarily read only. And they are easily replaceable if the SSD were to fail. And I'll back up to an actual external hard drive for extra precaution. I liked the idea of having that storage onboard so I'm not taking up any card slots on that part of my storage needs. I also like putting these libraries where the companies who created them suggest I put them. I know a lot of you point to the OWC 8TB and such, but I have a question. Those products use the 8TB in RAID, no? And isn't the data there redundant, meaning that instead of getting 8TB, you might only be getting 4TB? Am I wrong about how such products work? Also, I will have M.2 chips for client files, which *are* constantly being used for read AND write. I would imagine that, despite various numbers floating around, the internal Apple storage will be blazing fast and just as fast as any PCIe solution that is not RAID.
