Apple again hasn't decide whether they want to go full throttle with iPhone subscription or leave it to Carriers.

Apple should just make iPhone Subscription world wide, a.k.a the iPhone Upgrade programme, and extend it for up to 4 years.

I have friends literally documenting their kids growing up with 6 year old phones because they "work just fine". I just don't get it.
I have photos of my parents taken 40 years ago with a camera that's at least 40 years old. It's still nice to look at.

People take so many photos now, especially of their kids, that in future when someone says "Here's a <whatever replaces a USB stick in 40 years time> with 50,000 photos and about 1000 hours of video. Enjoy!" no one will look at them. And if they did, they won't think "Damn, look at that crappy photo. I bet it was taken with a 46 year old phone instead of a 40 year old one!".

It genuinely is refreshing to see someone with such common sense. It blows my mind that people squander money each year on 1k+ devices. I'd much rather spend it on my mortgage or going on holiday.
$1000 isn't that much money though?

I have seen this a lot lately....

I wonder how much the the advertising is costing for the iPhone now.

Also, when was the last time you seen an add for the ATV? I feel like I never see them anymore.

They also had a sandwich board with the trade-ins outside one of their stores. That's also new. I guess that the next step will be to modify it so a 'genius' can walk around the mall while wearing it ;)

Strange they’re doing this at all outside China, given it was 100% responsible for the revenue guidance. Cook says everywhere else had seen growth?

This seems so desperate. Anything but just lowering the price I guess.

Europe is not here for this whole pay everything off monthly BS. Either you can afford something right away or you just don’t.

I know. But trading my 8 and pay €449 for an Xr would be nice.
I never by stuff with monthly payments.

Analysts said they sold 2.5 mio less phones in china than last year. On top of that they expected to sell more than last year. So Apple has to move millions of phones. If they cut prices for the XR by $100 on top of the $200 trade in for a good 6s then I'm jumping. I might go for it even if it was a $100 apple gift card on top of the $200 trade in..

Sure. That’s why almost every American has several credit cards. Most of us don’t even want a credit card.

going to be a lot of conpetition coming
in 2019. other companies (hauweii, xaiomi, samsung, LG, oneplus) coming out with foldable and 5G phones. better low the price apple

The longer Apple sit on these the harder it will be to move with better and cheaper devices coming. Lowering the price is the best move to retain marketshare to fund developers and keep the app store alive.

Their next promotion will be "BIG DISCOUNTS FOR BIG PHONES" ... and Tim will croon about how this is the deepest, most extensive, most beautiful and amazing discounts the company has ever produced for the iPhone line.

Pretty much Apple ecosystem is locked. So they can relax for next 4-5 years. I don't think they will lower the prices next year also :(

Apple do it slightly differently here. In France, for example, you can currently get a 0 interest rate Apple loan for up to 12 months on any order worth between 249€ and 5000€:

https://www.apple.com/fr/shop/browse/finance/loan

I remember seeing similar things in the UK as well. However, if you choose to spread your payments over a period longer than 12 months, they will charge you a 9,47% interest rate, so it is less enticing. On the plus side, you do not need to trade anything in to benefit, which I guess evens it out.

At the moment Apple in the UK are offering 0% finance, through Barclays, for up to 12 months when you spend £399 or more in a qualifying transaction.

If I remember rightly if you go through Barclays it’s usually 14.9% or PayPal Credit and it’s 17.9%. PayPal Credit is higher but on the other hand you only need to spend something like £99 to qualify for monthly payments, whereas with Barclays, again, it’s a minimum order of £399.

The problem is vanity and stupidity. There really is no reason to upgrade every year or even every other year. People who tell you otherwise just lack common sense and/or like wasting money and creating more waste.
In the old age people would use products for a long time an repair shops were a common things. Nowadays, everything is disposable. When I go to my grandma and see what she is using I'm impressed that its still working and I have to say that some old things are just much better than the crap we get these days.

I'm still on iPhone 6. I think 4-5 years cycle these days is probably a bit more sensible. Also the tech jump is much better. Before iPhone 6 I had iPhone 4 which was on its last leg.

Anyway, you know what I mean :)

If you can afford something right away, but opt for the interest free monthly payment is just smart financial thinking. Paying off something right away, that could be paid later without being charged interest is not very smart (from a financial perspective).

They don't have credit cards in Europe? I am guessing many Europeans bought a phone on a credit card paying 26.95% or so rather than the no interest plans in the USA.

I think it depends on the individual, if they can afford it, why care?

Some people are really into tech, and wanting the latest and greatest that is out there. It is like a hobby to them.

If it doesn't impact me and mine, why would I care. I am sure there are plenty of things I like that other people think are a waste of time and money. Cars come to mind.

You can say there is no need to upgrade every year, but one could make the argument that there is no need to ever upgrade or even own a cell phone.

Every year is silly indeed. However with the decent second hand value the cost of upgrade isn't too bad.

For me, its all about the camera. You can't travel back in time and re-shoot videos/photos with a better camera. And the phone is great for immortalising all those small, every day memories. The dinners with friends, the decorating of a new home, the casual videos of elderly relatives. These are gold ten years later when you feel like looking back at your life and memories.

I have friends literally documenting their kids growing up with 6 year old phones because they "work just fine". I just don't get it.
And I do not get it when people use the phones for this and not the real cameras. To each his own.

So Europeans don't use credit cards? there are no auto financing, loan, or mortgage companies? wow that is amazing!
