Maybe they will replace the 4-button white iPods soon :D that thing won't even turn on, charge, or do anything.... I just keep it as a keepsake, my first iPod

I got one of those off eBay last year for about £15. A £5 battery later, it worked perfectly, original hard drive and all. I later sold it at a £10 profit :D

Same here. I love the size and shape of the original and second-generation iPod nanos. The new ones, not so much.

My first-gen nano was my constant Nike+ running companion for nearly five years. Now I wish I hadn't sent it in for the replacement. Still waiting, too.

I just got the return box for my 1GB Nano… Now what?

My nano arrived @ Apple on Nov 29. Status is still stuck at "Product replacement pending".

Some of me is kinda not too thrilled if I'm gonna get a 6th gen because I just ordered a cheap 1st gen case from OWC (to bump up to their free shipping).

On the other hand, a new 6th gen in exchange for the barely working 1st gen isn't too shabby. :D

November 24, and still pending. Not too concerned either way. My 1G was one of 5 iPods. It basically lived in the car, loaded with podcasts. Anything they send me will do that too.

i requested my box on the 1st dec, received it on the 19th n sent it same day, my gf only wanted me to send it if it was a 1st gen model :( how am i gonna explain this to her now :'(

Phase 1. Buy 1st gen from eBay
Phase 2. Sell 6th gen on eBay
Phase 3. Profit

Is this happening in the UK as well?

Are there any reports of this in the UK or is it just the States at the moment?
I know I've got an old iPod Nano rattling around somewhere. It's probably worth digging it out.
Cheers

I really hope they send me a first gen back. I loved mine, way better than any other nano. I sent mine in on November 22 and it still says Step 3 Return November 23, 2011: Product replacement pending. It's taking a long time, that's for sure.

I put the request in for the box the DAY it started; I still haven't gotten the RETURN BOX YET! I've already called them once, maybe I need to call them again.

I requested service back on 11/14/11 and my status still shows "service requested" and I have not seen a box in the mail yet for me to return my ipod...

I am in the UK and awaiting replacement, just get the code from your nano and put it into the replacement scheme section on the apple.com/uk site and it will tell you if your nano is eligable for replacement.

You complainers are hilarious. Apple is giving you something more valuable.

So, in case you haven't figured it out yet, here's some news for you: 1st gen nanos in great condition are selling on eBay for about $50 with free shipping. 6th gen nanos are fetching minimum $90.

I'm no rocket scientist, but it seems like you can have your first gen nano and profit close to $40. I'd say $40 is worth one trip to the post office.

Btw, mine has been in the "processing" state since Dec 2, for what it's worth. I'm pretty psyched about the possibility of a 6th gen.

My iPod trail has been an interesting one. Have a 1st gen nano, a 2nd gen nano that I gave my wife, then a 1st gen touch, and a year or so ago bought a used 5th gen classic for my wife that she uses for work, only to give her my touch after I got my iPhone haha. Also have a first gen shuffle somewhere in the house, but after running it through the dryer it is nothing more than a small capacity flash drive.

Anyway, I saw all this and the 1st gen is engraved, but the click wheel has been acting up for years and i have just been using it in my car with the usb. When I first saw this months ago I figured I wouldn't do it just for the same model, but I admit now if it's true and I get a 6th gen....Yeah I may trade up.

I actually replaced the battery in it myself last year with soldering gun and special tool to open it up. I am still waiting for mine after I sent in the original November 25! I just checked the Repair status on Apple's website and it says "Product replacement pending" I had mine engraved originally and I wondered if that was holding things up. (I don't need it engraved now). I am not sure if I want the new model.

Lucky, 5th gens are the king of the Nanos :D

Depends on how you use the Nano....I only made a couple of videos with my 5g, and found the screen painfully small to watch anything on...however, that slim form factor was just too wicked cool...

I got my 6g because of the radio feature. I needed a new sports radio for hockey games....and I liked the idea of wearing the new 6g as a watch, plus the touch screen features....

So, for ME....the 6g is the King of Nano's!

I don't use it for video myself (I only have the 8GB anyway), but it also has the radio, and a speaker and a microphone (both of which the 6G leaves out), and the bigger screen makes it easier to scroll through music and stuff even if you don't play videos on it.

And as you say, the form factor is friggin' awesome :D

Where do I go to, to see if I'm my nano is available to be replaced? Thanks.

I also requested replacement on the 14th of November and yet to receive anything other than email acknowledgement email of request for replacement. Here's to hoping the replacement arrives much faster once I send in old one.

Step 1 Request
November 14, 2011: Service requested

Step 2 Service
Diagnosis pending

Step 3 Return
Product replacement pending

Just checked the status of my replacement, and after a month of seeing "Product replacement pending" it finally changed to "Replacement product shipped."

I'll update as soon as I get my package in another day or two.

Update: Well I'll be damned... no sooner than I post this note when I get an email from Apple. Turns out I am getting a 6th gen iPod Nano. While I'm happy for the new model (I also got a settlement check a while ago for a Nano class-action lawsuit) I'm gonna miss having the old form factor. Oh well... time to hunt for a watchband.

If I get a 6th generation Apple will get a call for me. My 1st G one had sentimental value (gift from my mother) and was working, I only wanted the battery replaced. AND I have a 6th generation which I don't like. The click wheel allowed you in the road or in a store without looking to pause and start a conversation, with the 6th G you need to hit the power button to activate the screen, look onto the screen and hit pause. Very inconvenient.
