If I get a 6th generation Apple will get a call for me. My 1st G one had sentimental value (gift from my mother) and was working, I only wanted the battery replaced. AND I have a 6th generation on which I don't like. The click wheel allowed you in the road or in a store without looking to pause and start a conversation, with the 6th G you need to hit the power button to activate the screen, look onto the screen and hit pause. Very inconvenient.

Two things:
Surely you didn't expect Apple to give you back the exact same unit, considering it's a device with a non-replaceable battery? Why do you think they made it so clear that custom engravings will be lost?

Second, just sell your new 6th gen and buy a 1st gen. Pocket the $40 in profit. Heck, you could probably buy two 1st gen nanos for the value of your new replacement 6th gen.

Given that this is a very well out of warranty item that they are having to custom build for each order, actually no it isn't 'really ridiculous' at all. Particularly since they don't have to do this

Dell Support (atleast monitors) overnights replacements even when they are out of warranty. People might say crap about them and their call centers but they really have come a long way since they first moved them to India years ago. (based on my last few calls, I fix computers for a living) They actually have very good training and their accents are significantly reduced. They also have a great replacement program where you get the replacement and then send back your old one in the box the replacement came in. And this is just the consumer level support. All the business class machines (latitude, vostro, optiplex, precision) come with the 3 year pro support warranties which includes American call centers and 24 hour on site replacement and repairs. (These kind of things are why you see Dells and Lenovos all over large businesses) Apple is great and all but they definitely could learn a thing or too from dell. Most companies are not going to bring their machines to the Apple store. Especially since there are many areas of this country that are hundreds of miles away from the nearest one.

I have had many iPods since the touch version with the 4 red lit buttons. (gen3?) I have also purchased the 1st gen iPod nano, 2nd gen nano, and 2nd gen touch all with engraving as gifts. I have sent in my 1st gen with engraving "warning may contain pirated music" (hopefully someone at apple with get a laugh out of it) and the 2nd gen nano was replaced due to a faulty click wheel, both of which meant I lost the engravings.

The iPod Touch I gave to my Fiancé is now regulated to hidden in car use due to her upgrade to a iPhone 4. Being a guy into tech things I have also received many "tech" gifts that are now antiquated and have since been sold or thrown out.

Yes, it is true, many of these things hold sentimental value to people. But listen, you would be a fool if you thought that just by tacking on FREE engraving to a piece of tech that someone must keep and treasure it forever. If you want someone to keep something, get them a pen, or a watch etc. Not the latest and greatest gadget that is upgraded every 12 months.

If you treasure a gift, regardless of its age or condition then KEEP IT, no one is forcing you to use it as a day-to-day device, and certainly not turn it in to repair it. And if you REALLY love the functionality AND are attached to it, buy a spare one and use that! Heck, you could even, dare I say it, get it engraved at your nearest jeweler or things remembered!

Alternately, you all could stop complaining about being attached to a device which everyone KNOWS will be obsolete in less than 10 years.

Well - yes it is ridiculous because they exactly knew when this repair plan is going online and should have done a better preparation for it.

In particular if they are exchanging now with 6th gen!

If that's the case then why send it in? IF you were happy no need for a new one right? Love the gimmie mentality some have. Yes I know it was a replacement that apple offered for those with defective batteries. Yes I know your's (and others with no issues that sent theirs in) fell under the replacement blanket...... If it wasn't broke, why "fix" it?

Any who, congrats on your replacement.

Mmmmm, well if you read my post you might see that it had nothing to do with the GIMMIE mentality. I was torn because I loved my iPod Nano and hope to get it back...but had to send it back to Apple as my wife heard about the recall and didn't want the Nano to catch fire in the house. Maybe it would have, maybe/probably not. It didn't really matter at that point. Apple said "turn it off and send it in". My wife said "turn it off and send it in." So that is what I did.

Personally if Apple had allowed me to go to the Apple store and get the battery changed out I would have done that.

That said, I don't see the Nano replacement as a step down...I will miss my first gen and will love my 6th gen. Either a repaired 1st gen or a replaced Nano is fine with me. Still not sure how that became a "gimmie mentality".

it's an 8 GB replacement and the original was a 2 GB.

I just got mine as well. I sent in a 4GB one and got the same iPod nano 6g silver 8GB back. A very nice X'mas gift from Apple. In case anyone wonders, I requested on 11/12, got the box on 11/16, Apple received it on 11/17 and have the replacement back on 12/20.

Dude- chill..just get those white ear buds with a remote control on them....they are awesome for running (walking for me lol)...dont ever have to touch the nano itself.

They are not awesome for running, at all. Ever run during the summer using earbuds? Didn't think so

This is good news! However I hope they don't land me with a pink one. I'm gonna assume they're gonna just send out a load of the silver ones? I suppose we'll see once everyone's start arriving.

I knew it would not be the same one and it also did not have an engraving. But I don't like the 6th generation one and want a click wheel one (maybe even 4th or 3d generation)...

Are these 6th generation iPods nano NEW ones or refurbished ones?

look like refurbished to me but in perfect condition.

But buying a first gen from ebay most likely still has the battery issue to start with. My 1st gen was in working order but I sent in to have the possbile fire starting battery replaced.

On it's way

Got confirmation from Apple that mine is on the way form Nevada and will be delivered tomorrow. 6th gen iPod Nano according to the serial and it says it has warranty until December 2012 so my guess is it's new but minus the packaging cables and headphones.

iPod nano replacement

Recieved our IPod nano 6th gen today. Silver case w 8gb. Apple responded in less than 4 weeks. Looking forward to adding lots more than I had before. But it is so small that we are afraid it will get easily misplaced. :D

IPOD BATTERY ISSUES HAVE BEEN LINKED TO 12 DEATHS!! Never mind, I was sooo wrong. I think every one should send in their's NOW!!!!! WORKING OR NOT!!!!!
Edit.....
Wait a minute....... I googled "iPod linked to 12 deaths" and the only thing I got was this: http://www.tomsguide.com/us/ipod-death-earphones-earbuds-train,news-8098.html and this was really from his own negligence and not the iPods fault. Where you exaggerating?

Re-read my post, mate. You'll find the answer to your question. I was using a dangerous vehicle as an example, never saying it was the iPod that caused 12 deaths.

wow, can't wait to get my replacement :)
1st gen or 6th gen, I don't care.
Replacement is pending since 12/7, so I guess I still have to wait 4 weeks for my replacement.

silver

My guess is that the silvers will be the ones shipped as the silver and the green are the ones most returned and discounted.

I also requested replacement on the 14th of November and yet to receive anything other than email acknowledgement email of request for replacement. Here's to hoping the replacement arrives much faster once I send in old one.

Step 1 Request
November 14, 2011: Service requested

Step 2 Service
Diagnosis pending

Step 3 Return
Product replacement pending

Ironically... received the return package the same day I posted above message. Returning today for replacement. Hoping for 6th gen.

Heard nothing from Apple yet since the 16th of Nov, hope they haven't forgotten! :D

Also yeah, can any UK peeps chime in on what gen they received?

Received 6G Silver Replacement

I sent in my Wife's 8Gb 2G just as soon as the recall was announced. We received the Silver 6G 8Gb today from FedEx during their usual time for deliveries in our neighborhood, @ around 1000 hrs. We are happy!:)

Let us know what you get

Okay, I got my replacement delivered today. It's an 8GB silver 6gen Nano. Pretty nice, actually - just have to get used to the small size (and find a watch band for it).
