"...with Apple providing new outer shells and batteries."

Is this actually true for MacBooks? I know they state that they replace the shells and batteries for the iPhones and iPads, but there's nothing about it for the laptops.

I've removed this mention as it is indeed not listed this way on the website. I personally have not received a refurbished Mac with any signs of damage or battery issues nor have I heard of anyone receiving such a device, but since it's not explicitly mentioned, I took it out. I apologize for any confusion.

Refurb store shows at least twice the number of 16-inch units available vs. 14-inch. Probably a lot of users who learned the 16 carried around like a tank.

Or the 16-inch sales are just generally much higher. Many of the people who actually want a pro machine don't care about that little bit of additional weight, they'd rather have the larger display, larger battery, and better thermals.

According to their website, the 14" and 16" bases are getting 8% or less?

You're right, I was thinking of their Back to School promo where you get $159 back on top of edu if you don't pick up the AirPods, but that's definitely not a normal intended discount.

Retailers like B&H Photo carry nearly twice the number of MBP 14-inch SKUs vs. 16-inch.

Many consumers buying these care about the weight and size, or else they wouldn't be in the notebook market to begin with.

1TB of storage is high end? Is it still the 2010s? Some of these "Pros" come with a whopping 16GB of RAM which can't be upgraded. Boot your mac and use the Notes app. So exciting! If they're going to keep hobbling all their products can they at least release an M1 version of Snow Leopard or something so there's memory left to run programs?

Inflation. It costs more to manufacture & ship their computers than it did before. Then add in the extra steps for refurbs where Apple is paying for return shipping, refurbishment (new/replacement parts), and shipping a 2nd time. It's probably eating a large chunk of the profits.
They already charge more for a lot of things that should make up for that. Look at how much they charge for storage and RAM these days

Also, when it comes to inflation the number one question is: are we making more? If not, it doesn’t matter if the price went up because of inflation, it’s still more expensive than it was before

You never know what the previous owner did with it. A lot can happen in 30 days. Maybe it was abused to hell with benchmarks, battery has 30 cycles in it already. Maybe it was even dropped. You won’t be able to tell from the outside. This is a used machine. And it is too expensive for that.
Apple puts refurbs through more extensive hands-on-by-a-human testing than a new MBP sees. They are excellent choices. My expectation is that the hardware failure rate on refurbs is lower than on untouched new MBPs.

Of course they sell more of the cheaper models. Many folks do want lighter/cheaper; however others want power and display real estate. Folks like me happily carry 1.2 pounds more in exchange for:
A) Substantially larger display
B) More pixels
C) Better battery life
D) Superior performance (view tests at barefeats dot com)

The smaller display of the 14" model provides a very substantial reduction in productivity for most real work. But I do see the attraction of smaller/lighter/cheaper if one is carrying it around all the time. And the 14" can drive external displays when used in desktop mode, losing only a small amount of performance.

I bought a refurb 15” MacBook Pro back in 2013 and still using it today. Only problem I’ve had is the battery needs to be replaced. Upgraded the hard drive twice, ram, added a second drive and can run windows on it when I need to. Much more versatile machine than they offer today. Sad.
I bought a 2014 15" MBP as a refurb and other than replacing the battery, I never upgraded anything. I got it with 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD and that was enough for 7 years. I stopped upgrading Parallels and deleted my windows VM last year after realizing that I only started it up to do software updates. Not so sad.

1TB of storage is high end?
No. 1TB of storage is the minimum standard capacity on the higher end models. If you need more storage than that, you can configure it for 2TB, 4TB, or max it out at 8TB. Not everyone needs 8TB though, so Apple starts at 1TB.

I'm not going to comment on the pricing, but with the exception of my current M1 Max MBP 16", I've only bought refurbished from Apple for both home and work use for the last 15-20 years, and every single machine has been near flawless. All have cosmetically looked new, and we've had no real issues over probably about 15 total Macs. A few laptops but mostly iMacs, Mini's (workhorses!) and a pair of 2010 era MacPro's that are still encoding video today. Beyond the basic packaging, you'd never know the machines you buy are refurbished.

Refurbished is a better deal than the educational discount for me so I got myself a M1 MBA. Would stick with it for quite some time.
