People ripping on Alexa for its sound quality are the same ones who must not understand you can bluetooth Alexa to existing high end speakers in your home.. and it has ports.. for those of us apple users that have forgot what that is... they are these plugs on hardware that you can plug other things into...like speakers..

These same "dumb" people seem to be smart enough not to invite government Alphabet agencies into their homes with spy devices crafted for this very purpose. You literally have Infowars in your sig and are touting for people to buy an Alexa.

LOL.

It’s out of stock everywhere around me. It may be more popular than I thought.
I think the $250 price point is where it should be for good. Becomes way more attractive to people at that price and when stores like Best Buy put it on sale it would come down to $200-225. I think that would make them fly off the shelves.

“Siri, play some Beatles songs”
Shall I look for it on the web ?
“No, just play something like “Get back”, as published by Apple”
Shall I look for it on the Apple Website ?
“No, I meant Apple Records”
Apple is the most premiere computer company in the world.
“I know, I know, but I asked for “Get Back” or “Let it be”
OK, I will keep it as it is.
“Well - just forget it”

I just said "Hey Siri, play some Beatles songs."

She replied "Here's 'So How Come'" and played the song on HomePod.

Pretty crappy song by the way, but it worked.

Oh please, the government spies on everything you do. They can already turn on the mic on my iPhone whenever they want to listen and probably my Apple watch.. I will take my chances of putting an Alexa in my house. It's not like Apple is the gatekeeper of privacy here. They are better then most, but if the NSA wanted to know what was going on in my house, they could just turn on the mic on my iPhone or watch which I have on me all of the time.

This Homepod literally has no market. It does NOTHING better then Alexa or Google. Don't like the sound on Alexa or Google? Hook it up to an external pair of speakers. Problem solved.

Tim Cook is not a product guy - never will be. He is a bean counter and a shill to the Chinese.

Apple would sell more if they’d release the HomePod in more markets. At present, it’s only sold in North America and the U.K ( correct me if I’m wrong).

The primary competition for HomePod is Sonos, not Echo or Google Home. You could also say that the Google Home Max ($399 MSRP, on sale for $349 currently) is also competition.

And I get that, it just seems they misjudged the market by “only” competing with Sonos. I think because of Siri most consumers naturally expected it to be a home assistant equivalent (and tbh I’m sure with future updates that’s where it will head) so I’m not buying “quality” speakers when Apple could’ve literally done both and justified the price in doing so. Siri is better on OS devices but not the HomePod, the one thing she’s supposed to be doing?? I agree sound quality is great and wall-detection, etc. are cool features but Apple could’ve easily made Siri their home assistant, still say they aren’t competing in the home assistant market, and I bet this would’ve flown off the shelves.

TL;DR I’m still interested in the product I just need more for the price lol

It integrates with the Apple ecosystem and setup is a breeze. Alexa is a better voice assistant, sure. HomePod is a much much superior speaker. Siri works fine for what I do with it. What are people asking these voice assistants to do on a regular basis that Siri is unable to handle?

If that was all you wanted to achieve then an AirPort Express is what you were looking for.

The advantage of the HomePod is it’s always on and waiting for your instruction, anywhere within earshot. With receiver + speaker you need to walk over to the device and turn it on, remember to turn it off again when you’ve finished etc. I used to have this set up with both a Bose Wave and a B&O Zeppelin; I have replaced both with HomePods and get better use out of the ‘pod.

Its almost as if Apple has priced itself out of the market hmmmm. iPhone XR needs more marketing to sell them, and HomePods need a price drop to sell them when there are superior products on the market which lost less than the discount being offered.

Now please extend this to every other Apple product.
And a 50 dollar discount is going to change that? LOL

I agree, but I also have Dots.

The main difference for my use is being able to control an old WeMo device by voice, control my main home theater setup by voice with the SimpleControl app, and being able to start my eUfy (Roomba-like) cleaner by voice and telling it to go back home when I am finished.

I could live without these features, but I keep the Dots around for these few purposes. I also like how it will let me know when something is out for delivery from Amazon.

I also use the HomePod for Airplay 2 for systems I have around the house. I find the technology superior to Bluetooth or even a direct connection from a Dot.

Have Apple not discontinued those? Is it because they could have eaten into their new Home Pod market?

I am not an expert in these matters. All I know is even with a £50 discount it is still stupidly over priced in the UK and not for me or the family. If it was just a speaker without Siri? Perhaps a £100 offer might tempt me to loosen my already broken wallet.

Apple things just got too expensive in 2018 without justification for the high prices. Sadly I won't be able to afford to update like I have in the past so I will be making do with what I already own and that function perfectly well.

When things die or break, I will have to look into the second hand market. Simply just too expensive to get the latest but not quite the greatest as it was :(

This article piqued my interest, and I came dangerously close to buying a HomePod for $249 just to try it out. Then I came to my senses - since I have Sonos products already, I ended up ordering another Sonos One for $179.

Funny how things work out like that.

You're making an assumption based on what manufacturers advertise, which doesn't prove your initial point.

The only way to see the "pieces align" is show third party data showing how many people use their smartphones speakers for media in lieu of external speakers, be it sound system or blue-tooth speakers.

There you go. 20% listen to music with their phone speakers. That means 420 million. Happy now?

Yes she does. :) - and we're making progress with Sonos. I found putting sources/playlists as 'Favorites' in the Sonos app was a big help. Getting Podcasts through Sonos is the next challenge. I can see how this would all be easier to just 100% Apple it but I am trying to fight deeper lock in these days.
I wasn’t meant to sound quite so sarcastic by the way. I’m in the same boat, so I feel your pain. I’d love to have a HomePod for the sound quality but I refuse to commit to the Apple ecosystem. The Sonos One still impressed me with its quality though.

Well you have to pay for those high-end speakers as well. If someone is looking for a well balanced and good sounding smart speaker, Home Pod is a good choice.
You have to invest some money (certainly more then 200 bucks) to get to the same level. But of course, it's possible.

I have a couple dots around the house too. The girlfriend prefers them and I use them to turn the entertainment center on/off with the harmony app. Wish logitech would create a Siri shortcut. Oh well.
