Updated my iWork apps and Aperture last night. I will have to try again for iLife.
Also, I only had iWork installed on 1 computer at home (out of 3 macs). Will my Mac app store account show the iWork suite as "purchased" so I can install it on my other computers? Or do I need to install iWork '09 on those with the disc and then update them to the new versions?
Yes. Update on that one computer, then the updates are available on all computers using that app store account.
I base this statement on my own experience (I had the originals of iWork on all my computers, but only selected iLife apps on some but all on one; all iWork and iLife apps appear in my app store ready for download on all computers).

Sorry, this answer is not clear to me.
I bought a new iMac two years ago, with iLife installed. I upgraded all my iLife applications through the AppStore, always on the same iMac.
Now, let me understand:
- are upgrades free for any user who has iLife installed (regardless wheather they came with a new mac) or just for someone who bought a new mac?
If the first is true, then AppStore shouldn't have had to charge me for updating an iPhoto that was always installed on my mac since day 1.
The update is for iLife '11, which is iPhoto 9.x. If you bought a new iMac and got iLife '09 on it instead, you will not be able to upgrade for free.
However, if you have iLife '11 on it now (check the version splash screen) then you are eligible for the free update.
Some tricks to try (each individually; you shouldn't need to do all of these, so just pick the easiest one for you to try and if that doesn't work try another, etc):
- Change your OS system language to English (if it is not)
- In the App Store go to Featured > Quick Links > Account, click on "Restore" button on the bottom of the page
- Log out of your account and back in again
- Re-install iLife '11 from the disks that came with your computer, and/or register with Apple using your email tied to the App Store ID

How comes that some many people think this stuff is free?
In the end you paid for all of it already as Apple cross financed this stuff through the hardware you bought.
Perhaps people should also be reminded that Microsoft once tried to do that, with Security Solutions and with DVD Multimedia Playback (both things integrated in OSX) and they were dragged to court by Symanthek and DVD Codec Sellers for it, 'missusing their monopol to push into new fields'.
Its funny how Apple is applauded when doing so riding on their iTunes semi monopol imperium first to push into smart phones, then tablets and now desktops.
I really like all my Apple hardware but I absolutely hate this non equal treatment of companies, measuring stuff with absurdly different base values and rights and I would like to finally see apple in front of court for inclusion of Quicktime, iWork and iLife in their OSes which is actively destroying tons of other companies and an open eco system as they fund these apps through the significantly over-margined hardware
Apple does not have a monopoly. Windows was installed on 90% of all PCs when that unfair-business-practices suit was filed. Apple has nowhere near that level of power, either in the PC realm or in the Tablet or SmartPhone realms. I'm not sure what you mean by "iTunes semi-monopoly"; there is no definition of a monopoly in the market for a single application, and in the market where iTunes participates (pick any: music store, music player, media player, entertainment hub) iTunes is often a market leader but never has monopoly-level influence.
It is not illegal to be a monopoly, but when you are a monopoly you are restricted significantly in what you are allowed to do. This is because it is very easy for monopolies to use that power in one market to arbitrarily gain monopolies in all adjacent markets, which was exactly what Microsoft was doing in the '90s. Things that are completely legal, completely valid business practices for market leaders and upstarts alike become verboten the moment that market leader gains monopoly power in the relevant industry.

Problem is, there are people with iLife 2009 that HAVE gotten the free upgrades. It's either random, they were lucky, or something else is going on and Apple isn't being clear.
Are you sure about that? I know people with iWork '09 have gotten free updates (because like iLife '11, that was the last boxed version), but I haven't heard anyone claim iLife '09 got a free update.
