The upgrades were free. They just didn't announce it officially. It wasn't a decision made later, it just took time for the App Store to roll it out. You were supposed to pay for the upgrades anyway, if you didn't buy a new mac.

Sorry, this answer is not clear to me.

I bought a new iMac two years ago, with iLife installed. I upgraded all my iLife applications through the AppStore, always on the same iMac.

Now, let me understand:
- are upgrades free for any user who has iLife installed (regardless wheather they came with a new mac) or just for someone who bought a new mac?

If the first is true, then AppStore shouldn't have had to charge me for updating an iPhoto that was always installed on my mac since day 1.

How comes that some many people think this stuff is free?
In the end you paid for all of it already as Apple cross financed this stuff through the hardware you bought.

Perhaps people should also be reminded that Microsoft once tried to do that, with Security Solutions and with DVD Multimedia Playback (both things integrated in OSX) and they were dragged to court by Symanthek and DVD Codec Sellers for it, 'missusing their monopol to push into new fields'.
Its funny how Apple is applauded when doing so riding on their iTunes semi monopol imperium first to push into smart phones, then tablets and now desktops.

I really like all my Apple hardware but I absolutely hate this non equal treatment of companies, measuring stuff with absurdly different base values and rights and I would like to finally see apple in front of court for inclusion of Quicktime, iWork and iLife in their OSes which is actively destroying tons of other companies and an open eco system as they fund these apps through the significantly over-margined hardware

Mine is different. Says I have "iPhoto 8.x.x installed and not purchased through the App Store." And "would you like to buy iPhoto 9.5?" With a buy and cancel button.

I'm nevous to click buy. I haven't seen any updates yet and tried the account trick and the log out of the MAS trick. I'm wondering if I'll need to either call apple or just cut my losses.

I think what's annoying is there are people who's got updates for iLife 2009. ><

I updated my post. I didn't get the "would you like to buy?" part. I did get a bill (and after filing the "Problem" issue, got refunds for Pages and iMovie -- but the automatic system won't issue refund for Keynote) ... but I'll wait a few days and see what Apple does.

Open finder and look in the Applications folder
Find Aperture and right click the app and the Get Info

Thanks, but what would I be looking for?

Heads up. I had my first truly poor customer service experience with Apple this morning. I had upgraded Pages for $19.99, hours before the upgrade was made free. I then upgraded Keynote and Numbers for free, and called Apple to request a refund on Pages. The supervisor I spoke with informed me that he cannot refund the $19.99, even though the upgrade is now free, because it was not free when I purchased it and I still got the "benefit." Of course, this was all due to the slow rollout of the upgrade pricing.

I definitely understand from a logical perspective, but from a customer service perspective, I am very displeased.

Finally got it to work - iWork 09 free updates

As the buyer and owner of iWork 09 legacy license in a non-US country (Denmark in Europe), I have been struggling for the last couple of days to get Mac App Store to recognize my legacy iWork 09 installation and offer free upgrades.

I have tried all suggestions like logging out and in, setup a new admin user, nothing has worked so far.

Even calling Apple Support did not render a result, I was told that old iWork 09 installations did NOT qualify for free upgrade, and that it was an error that some could upgrade and that I had to pay.

Not taking NO as an answer I tried one more thing, I set my iMac to english language AND (I think very important) my area to US. And after rebooting, HEY PRESTO, Mac App store could recognize my legacy iWork 09 installation and offer free upgrades. I had to re-enter my Apple ID password to associate those apps to my Apple ID in the future, they have downloaded for free (tied to my local danish Apple ID now) and I have changed back to danish language and Denmark as area and everything works.

So Apple, shame on you for favorizing US users and luring international users to buy...

I'm not able to see free update

I've iLife '09 that came with my macbook pro 2010 model but I still see only buy option for ilife apps. As people suggested I signed out and in multiple times. My language preference is already english.
Can anyone help?

Updated my iWork apps and Aperture last night. I will have to try again for iLife.

Also, I only had iWork installed on 1 computer at home (out of 3 macs). Will my Mac app store account show the iWork suite as "purchased" so I can install it on my other computers? Or do I need to install iWork '09 on those with the disc and then update them to the new versions?

The new apps get tied to your AppleID so if you sign in to the MAS using that AppleID they will show in the purchases tab.

You need to have iLife'11 on your Mac to get the updates.

Great tip. Worked for me, thanks a lot.

Changing the system language was the trick to make it work. Thanks. :)

First of all: To get all the updates, you must be running OS X Mavericks

Get the Aperture trial from the source: Apple

If after installing you can't see the updates, the trick that worked for me is to change the system language to english -> Reboot -> Check for updates again -> Change the language to your preferred one -> Reboot.

BTW, I love this new  philosophy.

I personally never tried iWork suite from Apple. But I happen to have a version 2009 trial install in a backup HDD where I installed and tried to upgrade since they allow it.

However, I've never been able to upgrade the 2009 version. I see the updates in MAS and asks me to enter my password when I try to update one of the 3 app and then nothing happen.

Edit: NM, it worked after rebooting. weird

switched my system language to english and voilà!!!! iMovie updated for free.

in any case, I agree with some post below: there shouldn't be any localized preferences among apple's users. money is money and it's valuable whenever it comes from, not only from english-speaking countries (not to talk that prices in euro zone are not equating the us$<->€ exchange rate but they are normally higher).

I purchased iWork 09 as a DVD. It is installed but when I log on to the App Store it tells me to pay 19.99 for them. Is this normal? Or will that be updated soon?
Thanks

It's currently a known issue with a work-around. Create a new user on your system with admin privilages. Log in as that user, and open the App Store. You should be able to get the updates then. Once you've done so, you can get rid of that user account.

Wait - I'm a bit confused. Does this apply to all software that's available through the MAS, or to Apple's own software only?

IE, I sometimes directly email people signed copies of Battery Status for one reason or another. These are often special builds that are time bombed (IE, it'll stop working a week or two after I email it) that I provide just because they wanted a demo and will be buying a few hundred copies if it works for them. Will the MAS see this special time bombed build and then tell them they've bought the app and offer to allow them to download the ordinary version for free via the MAS?

I suppose I could start using another certificate for my time bombed builds or something... but that sounds like a pain...

Just in my experience, not sure about others, but the MAS has never recognized any test/trial or otherwise obtained software I install. And this new change seems to only apply to Apple software, so I wouldn't worry. Just my two cents, tho, not sure if such thing has ever worked for other people.

You need to have iLife'11 on your Mac to get the updates.

Problem is, there are people with iLife 2009 that HAVE gotten the free upgrades. It's either random, they were lucky, or something else is going on and Apple isn't being clear.

Does those with Aperture 2.1.4 eligible to get free latest Aperture in Maveric

I have purchased Aperture 2.1.4.

Doesn't look like the route you're suggesting is one supported by Apple.

This notification is posted on the Apple website regarding the Aperture trial version:
"The trial version of Aperture is no longer available. If you currently have a copy of the Aperture 3 Trial installed on your Mac, you must delete it from your Applications folder before downloading Aperture 3 from the Mac App Store."

Gotta reinstall my old (paid) iWork 08 now... Will be nice to get a free update!

You might want to wait on that. I just reinstalled iWorks '08 on my machine then went to update Pages and it charged me $19.99.

Now I need to contact Apple to see if I can get a refund.

where did you fill the "problem" issue? I have not got the refund for my iMovie after I went to getsupport.apple.com.

Thank you.
