I am confused. I have, in the past, had Aperture installed from less than legitimate means. It always updated automatically through the App Store. It never became part of my library/purchases, however. i.e. if I uninstalled, I could not reinstall through the App Store.

Am I missing something here? Tons of pirated software will update properly - how is this different or new? Are they actually authenticating them and making it as if you'd purchased them?

Wait - I'm a bit confused. Does this apply to all software that's available through the MAS, or to Apple's own software only?

IE, I sometimes directly email people signed copies of Battery Status for one reason or another. These are often special builds that are time bombed (IE, it'll stop working a week or two after I email it) that I provide just because they wanted a demo and will be buying a few hundred copies if it works for them. Will the MAS see this special time bombed build and then tell them they've bought the app and offer to allow them to download the ordinary version for free via the MAS?

I suppose I could start using another certificate for my time bombed builds or something... but that sounds like a pain...

damn, I wish I would've had a trial version of Aperture. Oh well, I'll just wait for the next new version and show some love and support. :)

ordered an all new maxed out imac 27" for €3000 two days ago.
its a really really really powerful machine....
more and more the price doesn't feel high AT ALL to me.
had to replace my low end mid 2007 24" machine because lighting struck.(LITERALLY!!)
would have gotten about two more years (7 overall) of "good" usage out of it..

i expect my new one to last something like 10 years..(with little degradation in ease of use due to the machine being "old" -unlike windows machines)

thats one ****** big plus with apple computers

a few years ago, i had once a major issue with reinstalling Windows with the serial number sticked under my work laptop and the official CD provided with it

i called MS and they treated me like a theft, they asked to prove the ownership of the licence, the purchase of the computer

i spent 2 days explaining them that i was stuck in my work due to the defective OS, they simply didn't care

i finally ended up working with my own personal mac to continue my work

conclusion: even if you are honest and have a paid licence, purchased with a computer, MS would treat you like s***

i had once an issue with the App Store, i called, it took them 5 minutes to check on my account and resolve the issue

wow. buying apple hardware may come at a premium, but it comes with so much high quality software. i can't say more without bashing the competition.

Starting to like Cook!

Not only, that he gave free software to me for updating legal but hopelessly outdated versions - he also does have the obvious plan to directly hurt Microsoft and Google severely :)
I am taking back every criticism, I did post about Tim Cook. He definitely deserves to be Apple's CEO. He makes a good job!
Bravo!

so you didn't read the article like AT ALL ?

As much as I love this, getting Aperture for free :)...

Let's not forget Apple is a hardware company, where Microsoft needs their licensed software to make money.

This is why I buy Apple stuff. Apple isn't perfect, but it's pretty darn good to its customers.

I would have agreed with you wholeheartedly 6 weeks ago but my experiences of trying to buy an iPhone 5S have made me believe that Apple is not as customer focused as it once was. After sales are superb (can't fault them on that) but with regards to sales, I think they could do far better.

Good. Can we stop people from making Powerpoint presentations that look like a middle schooler made them and have people start using Keynote now please?

Release iWork for Windows and then you might. People get tired of the same old thing, even in the "suit and tie" business world where creativity doesn't belong apparently. I think it'd make Microsoft a bit nervous.

Now when it comes to Word and Excel, Pages and Numbers aren't quite there yet for the power-users of those programs.

Well, I was able to update the iLife apps just fine, but the iWork '08 suite(which I paid for) still doesn't offer any free upgrades. Maybe later in the day.

Gotta reinstall my old (paid) iWork 08 now... Will be nice to get a free update!

I have my iWork '08 installed but it still telling me I have version 1.0.3 not bought from the Mac AppStore, and asking me if I want to buy version 3.

But the iLike I got with my 2011 iMac updated.

"We like to believe that our users are honest, even if that belief is in vain."

Ok, so Apple wants to me resist.
It's really hard not to install Pages, Keynote and Number as well as Aperture for free - Apps I really want since a long time, but didn't have the money for, because my Mac already was a huge investment for me.

Since I want to work for Apple someday, I have to resist.
