I have the iPhoto that came new with my 2009 MacPro. When I try to upgrade at the App Store, I get a message saying "iPhoto 8.1.2 is already installed and was not purchased at the Mac App Store. Do you want to buy iPhoto 9.5"

Does anybody know what I need to do to get a free upgrade?

You must install Mavericks first. Have you done that yet? Once Mavericks is installed then the updates should appear for whatever apps you had installed previously.

yeah, guess iWork 08 is not included in the update. I am not complaining it pretty old and I get it. Apple should be more specific about it though, they make is sound like all iWork gets the free upgrade. I tried to upgrade by purchasing it, but it didn't give me a free option. Glad I didn't do it! IWORK 08 users beware!

Mavericks installed. I have iLife '09 that came preinstalled on my MBP. I can update garage band for free (no use for this though). I really want to update iPhoto, however, and it's saying 14.99 to purchase... Seems others are encountering this problem as well.

Thoughts?

They aint worried about nothin

These guys are literally swimming in money like Scrooge McDuck but they don't play stingy with their money. I know MS is software corp and Apple a hardware corp, but I haven't heard of MS doing something like this.

Good work Apple!

Go to the MAS in Mavericks.
Click on store and then click on check for unfinished downloads.

Then it should appear in the purchased section of the MAS.

Oh okay. I haven't tried it as I don't have it installed but if that is the case then that is the difference; before it would never become one of my purchased apps.

ordered an all new maxed out imac 27" for €3000 two days ago.
its a really really really powerful machine....
more and more the price doesn't feel high AT ALL to me.
had to replace my low end mid 2007 24" machine because lighting struck.(LITERALLY!!)
would have gotten about two more years (7 overall) of "good" usage out of it..

i expect my new one to last something like 10 years..(with little degradation in ease of use due to the machine being "old" -unlike windows machines)

thats one ****** big plus with apple computers

Don't count on it. Make sure you get AppleCare. I (foolishly) didn't for my maxed out 2011, and bit a $1,000 bullet less than 2 years in with a logic board and graphics card replacement on a home-use-only computer. And it's not the only Mac I've had issues with (although the others were repaired under warranty).

I used to be attached to my old "PowerMac lasted me 7 years" paradigm; bad idea. It's a PC. They all break. I especially don't trust the iMac, all that heat in a single enclosure can't be good (although I hear the new ones run much cooler than mine). So I'd temper expectations if I were you.

Apple is a hardware company.
As long as you are using Apple hardware I can't imagine they really care one way or another.

My machine is too old to run Mavericks.. it would be great if they offered it for those of us who did purchase these titles, but aren't able to upgrade the OS :(

I would have agreed with you wholeheartedly 6 weeks ago but my experiences of trying to buy an iPhone 5S have made me believe that Apple is not as customer focused as it once was. After sales are superb (can't fault them on that) but with regards to sales, I think they could do far better.

Interesting concept. I would not believe that having to wait a little while for a product which was just released would be so devastating. Then again, I ordered that Friday at 5am PT and had my phones on Wednesday. However, I was fully expecting (and fine with) receiving the phones in 3-4 weeks.

I am so glad that Apple is not caring about unethical users, otherwise the rest of users would have to deal with security procedures.

I myself paid for Pages yesterday and Keynote today, my credit balance is a few dollars short of getting Numbers.

I got iMovie, iPhoto, Garage Band, iBooks and Mavericks for free.

If you can afford an Apple product, then you afford their software; Sadness me to see Apple users practicing piracy.

I purchased iWork 09 as a DVD. It is installed but when I log on to the App Store it tells me to pay 19.99 for them. Is this normal? Or will that be updated soon?
Thanks

Is it still technically illegal if you update Aperture through the free trial version?

I paid for iWork today, but Aperture would be nice haha.

Only for new Mac purchases?

Do these free updates for legacy software versions of iLife, iWork, & Aperture only apply to people buying/have just bought a new Mac? Or should anyone be able to update for free regardless of how old their Mac is?

It seems Logic Pro and FCP have been left out... Maybe too expensive to give out for free?

Logic Pro X and Final Cut Pro X have never been released as boxed software so there's no way to trick MAS into thinking you own it.

iMovie 10.0

I was able to install all of the updates except for iMovie 10.0. It is refusing to install as I have and ATI Radeon HD 2600 256 mb video card and it will not allow it.

Free software to sell the sexy hardware. I'm liking this entire week.

It's about time. Google gives out free (at cost) hardware to sell data services/advertising. Makes sense for Apple to give out free software to sell hardware. I'm still waiting for Apple's true counterattack: ad-free, non-tracking search. Google is attacking Apple's hardware business by giving everything away for free. Apple needs to return the favor.

I think regarding Aperture it is a bit different.
If you want to get iWork for free you have to get the trial version from softpedia or wherever, but if you use the Aperture trial from Apples own homepage it is not that illegal ?!

My understanding is this is for people that purchased an upgrade in the past from the app store (downloaded) and not if it was preinstalled. I may be wrong.

My friend has a MacBook Pro that came with SL and iPhoto/iMovie preinstalled. He was able to update them both to the newest versions after going through the multitude of updates he has been neglecting...

This is pretty cool.

I thought I remember my previous purchases of iLife and Aperture not being updated through the MAS but through the "old-fashioned" Software Update.

But, I think Apple's main point with this "freebie" and the Mavericks "freebie" is getting people used to going to the Mac App Store and purchasing software that way. even if only for updates so you get used to it.

I was thinking my older apps would not get the upgrades and was expecting nothing but when i launched Mavericks the new ones showed up there for me to update…pretty freakin' cool.

*I had a HD crash and replaced and I bought the new Lion and got the iLife and iWorks on that "fix" so surprised as they were not purchased via the MAS.
