Really liking the way Apple is doing things for free!

Agreed. Is this Apple rewarding us hardware buyers for choosing higher quality products at a premium price or are they trying to change how the software and upgrades models are viewed to attract non Apple users? Either way it's a win for us and an awesome week of announcements.

"We like to believe that our users are honest, even if that belief is in vain."

And Microsoft's business model is based on the opposite. One of the thousand reasons I love Apple's products and philosophy.

And one of the thousand reasons why Microsoft will always be like the dickish older brother in Weird Science.

You mean Chip? ;)

Does this mean that if I have iWorks 08 that came on an older computer of mine that has been migrated through Time Machine to my new late 2012 iMac they will be updated? Because I'm not getting an update option for them in the Mac App Store. I never purchased them though. Although I did purchase pages last year through the my Store and it was updated as well as my iLife apps.

I was trying to buy iPhoto yesterday, and was positively surprised that it let me download it for free. Happy customer!!

My iPhoto stopped working after the upgrade to mavericks and the App Store made me pay another 10£ to buy it again.
I felt ripped off.
And the free GarageBand now requires that you buy media if you want to use all of its sounds.

Release iWork for Windows and then you might. People get tired of the same old thing, even in the "suit and tie" business world where creativity doesn't belong apparently. I think it'd make Microsoft a bit nervous.

Now when it comes to Word and Excel, Pages and Numbers aren't quite there yet for the power-users of those programs.

They did, essentially, by releasing iWork for iCloud.

Unable to uUpgrade Legitimate iPhoto

I have the iPhoto that came new with my 2009 MacPro. When I try to upgrade at the App Store, I get a message saying "iPhoto 8.1.2 is already installed and was not purchased at the Mac App Store. Do you want to buy iPhoto 9.5"

Does anybody know what I need to do to get a free upgrade?

Its a great stance by Apple. Very much doubt they make much profit, just hope to cover the costs of building these products.

Its consumer based products such as iWork are there to entice people to the Mac, not make huge profits directly. The profits come from selling hardware.

All of it. But I suspect that Microsoft's recent adverts may be backfiring on them. Free Numbers, Pages and Keynote including free web apps _really_ kicks Microsoft where it hurts them. There are of course people who need all the power of Excel and Word, but many many don't. Even if it doesn't move Windows users over, Excel and Word for Mac suddenly got a lot harder to sell.

I would have agreed with you wholeheartedly 6 weeks ago but my experiences of trying to buy an iPhone 5S have made me believe that Apple is not as customer focused as it once was. After sales are superb (can't fault them on that) but with regards to sales, I think they could do far better.

I've seen stories about bad experiences on here, which probably happen at various places. But Apple keeps on getting overall high marks in surveys, so those seem to be at least at a minimum.

Its not about selling hardware as many have said. And Apple could ****** on iLife for all they care. Its about selling their cloud service, and that's the way ot should be - just like cellular companies sell the service, not the phones. Except without the cellular company extortion.

Haha, +1 Apple.

So convenient to update my apps (iWork, iLife, Aperture) through Mac App Store, even though i pirated all of them...

Now do the same thing with Final Cut. :))

My understanding is this is for people that purchased an upgrade in the past from the app store (downloaded) and not if it was preinstalled. I may be wrong.

I am confused. I have, in the past, had Aperture installed from less than legitimate means. It always updated automatically through the App Store. It never became part of my library/purchases, however. i.e. if I uninstalled, I could not reinstall through the App Store.

Am I missing something here? Tons of pirated software will update properly - how is this different or new? Are they actually authenticating them and making it as if you'd purchased them?

Go to the MAS in Mavericks.
Click on store and then click on check for unfinished downloads.

Then it should appear in the purchased section of the MAS.

iWork 09, iLife 2011 and Aperture 3.0 are the minimum versions needed.

Allowing unethically obtained software intentionally downloaded from users is a bit extreme.

I'm assuming (perhaps also in vain) that the number of folks who have (only) pirated copies of the suites are relatively small.

After all, you received a copy of iLife with any and every Mac you purchased. So there's your license there.

I don't imagine there was a huge number of people who pirated iWork. At $49 or whatever it was before they became separate purchases in the App Store, it was virtually a steal anyway. Plus, even if you did pirate it, you're probably running it on a Mac -- which means Apple got their money anyway.

Sure, there are some folks running pirated everything on a Hackintosh, but those guys are a very small minority.

The amount of goodwill, press, etc. generated by this story -- along with the labour savings of otherwise coming up with some kind of "prove you are a legal owner" scheme -- far outweighs the potential loss of a few bucks.

I'll have to try this again when I get home -- pretty sure last night I was not seeing the new apps as available to update. I would love to download free updates to my iPhoto, Numbers, etc.

I unfortunatly had to get iLife unethically. I have the 09 DVD but the MAS wouldn't recognize it at all for some reason, so I uninstalled them and grabbed a DMG of iLife 11 and it worked perfectly. Not how I wanted to do it, but it worked and now I don't feel near as bad. Thank you Apple!
