I have been a part of the Apple Upgrade program for a few years and really like it, I "rent" the latest phone and don't have to deal with selling it on the secondary market. This year like everything else in 2020 has a curve ball with it. I currently work for a company that took over my cell phone bill and number, it is now part of their corporate account. When I try to pre book I AT&T doesn't recognize me anymore. Which makes some sense.
Now I have options that I generally don't like, like others that joined the upgrade program last year at launch day, I owe more than Apple would give me on a trade in if I were to buy a unlocked new iPhone 12, just a pain more than a issue. I can sell on the secondary market and pay listing fees and such, just a pain but doable. AT&T says they can't help at all as the number isn't on a personal account, I can sleep ok with that answer as I don't have to worry about a cell phone bill. Apple says I could setup a new line of service, start a new upgrade program on that one, swap sims and cancel the line. Not sure what costs would be associated with canceling the line. Apple didn't have a clear answer on how a new line would invoke the return of my iPhone 11.
I wish the carriers weren't involved in the upgrade progam, but obiously see that they kindof need to be in the mix to allow the new SIM and IMEI. Apple said last night that the upgrade program is tied to the serial number of the phone and not the number or carrier. It would have been great if I could have just gotten an unlocked phone on the upgrade program and not have to worry about the other details, I guess that is 2020 for ya, hopefully Apple gets enough feedback for next year to allow it.
I guess this post is more a word to the wise that if somehow you are part of the upgrade program and then had your personal line transfered to a corperate account you are no longer able to be a new upgrade program member.
