I plan on going with the X so I have time. Unfortunately I'm enrolled in the Next program with AT&T so I'm debating maybe next month either paying off the full amount so I'm free to get an X without having to trade in the phone. It looks like I could re-sell the phone on ebay for the same price I owe on it anyway that might be a better deal in the long run.
This is exactly what I want to do with the Verizon device payment plan. Pay it off and just either buy the X outright or through the Apple Upgrade Program. The less I am tied to Verizon the happier I will be.

The new interesting twist is that the X won't be out for six weeks. So, those of us wanting that will be making usually two extra payments. What happens to them? And us, next year, when we want the next phone that comes out, we hope, at the *normal* time, and we are two payments short? ...

I thought about this and my best guess is since they won't have your old phone for another 6 or more weeks they could argue the value of your phone is doing to decrease in those 6+ weeks because others will be turning theirs in when the 8 comes out. While the prospect of making two extra payments isn't appealing, if I wanted to pay the phone off and try and sell it myself 6 weeks later I'm sure I wouldn't get as much for it as if I sold it 6 weeks earlier.

Anyone miss the 128gb size. 256gb way over kill and very pricey. 64gb while not that bad in price not enough.

It's just Apple ****ing with the ASP(Average Selling Price) again. This time, they upped the base storage but also the base price, from $649 to $699. So *everybody* is paying $50 more from the get-go. Then, they eliminated the middle tier which should have been $749 and priced the highest tier at $849, but it's actually $200 more than the previous lowest tier price. Basically they've raised the base ASP by $50, eliminated the $100 upgrade tier, and only kept the $200 upgrade tier.

Anyone who did the pre-approval with the iPhone 8, how did the remainder of the process work?

It's basically as if you bought the phone outright at that point. There's no interest or penalties so basically no downside to doing that.

I used the app to set up my pre-approval. This morning at 3AM, I opened the app and clicked 'complete pre-order.' All I had to do is choose shipping method. By 3:06 my order was placed.

Delivery set for the 22nd.
Chose store pickup as I have an IUP trade in.

Sounds much smoother than last year. The complete preorder button was just on the main screen of the app?

Did you have to do in store for the IUP? I thought they could mail you something to send in your old one. It doesn't matter much to me as I could do either. I'm only curious.

You do not. You can have them ship you a box. I chose to visit the store as I would rather get it all done in one shot.

Yeah, way better. I'd love to pay for a device in full, and then have to give it back before I got my next one, which I'd then have to continue paying for and so on...
If you pay for the device in full, you own the phone and do not have to give anything back. Sell it on Gazelle.com or another site and start a fresh lease plan.

Thanks! Did you get to pick a time to pick up your phone? The two times I've gone to an Apple Store on an launch day were chaotic to say the least. Those with reservations formed 1 line and those without formed another (MUCH longer) line. Those with reserved times had a much shorter wait but they still waited.

Yes, appointment times were available. I chose 5-5:30pm due to work.

No just current customers
So for me to preorder as a new customer I'll have to fill out all that info at 3am est. that might be a deal breaker. I might just buy it full out. By the time I fill out the form get approved and order it will take a while no?

That is my concern. By time I finish filling out the form or whatever they need shipping times will slip.

Yea it's so weird to me that they wouldn't let new customers do it.

What did they do last year? Or was last year first year they did Apple upgrade

I think the pre-approval is a concession to existing customers given the problem that occurred yesterday. It took a while with the approval process last year and stock wasn’t allocated for IUP customers, which led to a lot of anger. It was the standard checkout at which point the approval process was started; by the approval step, high demand devices were sold out and backordered by weeks.

My guess is pre-approval and quick checkout will lead to stock allocation appropriately after checkout whether via delivery or retail (with Apple getting your allocated phone to their retail site within a week). Last year after pre-orders, if you contacted the IUP program, they worked hard to redirect desired devices to nearby stores directly from the factory. This was all done within a week.

What exactly do they need during the process for new customers? Is it a full blown application or just SSN, DOB, and a credit card? If it’s the latter that shouldn’t take too long.

IIRC, it is just those 3 things in store, so I’m hoping online is the same

Those are the main things plus entry of billing address. The long part is the verification and hard pull on credit by Citizens for initiation into IUP. Subsequent upgrades are soft pulls.

Not really worried about a hard pull. As long as you stay under 4 in a 24 month period it really doesn't affect an established credit profile at all. That makes sense the credit check could take a second, especially will thousands of others are going through the same process at the same time.

So

its a benifit that current members get?

How long is the application when starting? Hopefully it isn't that long.

Also did any new customer try to do the pre approval
