Because Microsoft is well-known for their legendary build quality across all their product lines. /s

P.S. The entire surface lineup has lower percentage of Microsoft's revenue (5%) than iPad alone has for Apple right now (9%).

Dude. You gotta go grab a free copy of the Missing the Point app from the App Store. It can do wonders for those that struggle to recognize light hearted fun in the written form.

It takes an experienced tech several hours to replace this part. Apple knew how to make a hinge and had been doing OK for eight years with these when they decided that the end of the spring should move back and forth in a tiny piece of Delrin. Scratch scratch snap!

That's not completely accurate. Apple has been known to stonewall on reported problem. They did with fan issues in the G5 iMac for instance. They denied different screen defect issues on previous MBP and then subsequently, at a later time, initiated repair programs for the devices. Apple is a deny first, act later. If it was first rate customer service, they would investigate and resolve the issues promptly.
Overheating and dieing iMac 24in 3.06s anyone. What ever happened to that proposed class action. All because of some soildering techs told me.

plastic washers ? Wonder what Apple has to say for themselves.. I don't think a "We're sorry for the inconvenience"will work this time... There is only so much they can get away with by saying that.

At least they are doing the right thing

As much as many of us gripe about Apple lately, it remains one of the better companies when it comes to service.
This flaw should never have happened in the first place. But at least they're stepping up and making it right.
They should have made it right as each component failed, not years later, that is not Apple putting it right, that is them forced to do so prior to a class action.

I've lost count how many times ve been back to Apple for repairs/replacements. Far more than any other brand I own

Uh oh. Hinge-Gate! It's cool that Apple is stepping up & doing the right thing tho. Obviously this is a major design flaw that needs to be addressed pronto, and in all future iMacs too. No more plastic washers...EVER! Lol. Seriously. Otherwise this will keep happening. Use Jonny Ives favorite material...Alu-min-ium! Or better yet LIQUIDMETAL washers! Heh heh.

Things you shouldn't have to pay to fix in the first place

You're right. You should just abandon the whole Mac ecosystem. I hear Dell and Acer make excellent products. The sooner you jump ship the better...
Agreed.

Let's coin a new word:
to applegize: making customers pay for Apple's mistakes.
to samsungize: (fill in later)

You're right. You should just abandon the whole Mac ecosystem. I hear Dell and Acer make the best products. They last forever, look amazing, and run the best operating system in the world. They will even fix a 5 year old computer if they deem it's their fault free of charge. The sooner you jump ship the better...

I actually like their hardware - their mice & keyboards were miles ahead of anything Apple ever made.

They should offer refunds for false advertising. The iMac has to downthrottle because it's CPU cooling is first-class garbage so it never reaches it's advertised maximum speed.

I didn't know this. I was considering purchasing one. Do you have any links about this? Is it specific models?

Apparently Apple have done a detailed engineering review and the hinge isn't badly designed, it's because we have repeatedly dropped our iMacs.

I was told the issue was caused by people putting it in their back pants pockets, then sitting. Can't really blame Apple for that.

I wouldn't say several hours but it is a giant pain in the ass. I can't wait for the flood of idiots coming in saying their hinge is broken and needs to be replaced because "I READ ON MACRUMORS THERE IS A RECALL" just like every time an REP starts.

Good job Apple. Now replace all those peoples iPhone 6s' rather than fob them off with a battery replacement program.
Right.. based on that logic car companies should replace entire cars because one part is bad.

Confirmed by Linus from Linus Tech Tips:

Go to the 2:55 minute mark. This is likely true for the newer iMacs as well. Absolute garbage and it's mind boggling how a) Apple gets away with this total bullsh*t and b) PEOPLE STILL BUY THE iMAC?!?!?!

Wait, so you are comparing a $500 Dell to a $2K Macbook?

And all the problems you just described affected the plastic Macbooks too and they were $1K+ models. Go look at the cracking, peeling, swelling batteries and discoloration on this very forum.

Price means nothing. Apple laptops are still fraught with issues. You don't have to look very far. Ask anyone with a rMBP with the screen coating coming off ...

Completely missed the point. Obviously Macs have issues, as no product is absolutely perfect. I'm simply pointing out that if people think Apple is bad, they are free to go to Windows camp and deal with their far more frequent and worse issues. Also, going off of forums is like going to hospital and concluding the entire population sick. People who have issues flock to forums.

These people obviously haven't been in the windows camp. If they think Apple's quality and QC is bad, they haven't seen nothing yet. I've been on $500 Dell Inspiron laptops before. Never again.

As a college student, the difference is obvious. I know several people with separating hinges, pieces breaking off, or loosening screws on their windows laptop and now have to find a replacement laptop. These laptops have no value, so expensive repairs aren't even worth it. People give me crap over my paying almost $2k for my rMBP, but my laptop is still going strong and runs as well as the day I bought it.

I've had 3 Apple laptops go bad. iBook with 5 failures, Powerbook that went bad just out of warranty, and a MacBook 2015 that went bad just out of warranty when screen failed. My work Dell laptops have never had problems.

Oops, 4th laptop, Powerbook 15 years ago, failed hinge.

Apple is not perfect.

People keep missing the point of my post. I acknowledge that Apple's products aren't perfect. I need to rephrase what I said.

Surface Studio is a 28" display and starts at $3000, as you said.
A Wacom Cintiq in 27" runs $2300, and you still have to buy a computer to use with it.
There's really not a huge difference in price.

One of the Penny Arcade guys has one of these and really loves it. The display feels more natural because the gap between the drawing surface and the actual display is much thinner, he said, compared to he Cintiq.

Maybe the issue here is you're not really the type of customer that Microsoft is targeting with this device, so you do not see the reason to spend such a large amount of money a computer outfitted this way.
For graphics designers, illustrators, and other creative professionals with an all-digital workflow it's not so simple.

As I said, people want a spare monitor to use with a Mac mini or similar.

I'm not criticizing the 4.5K display quality or the crappy N-trig pen, that's supposedly so good.

why do people assume that when one uses "Windows" they cant have different manufacturers? That's like saying Japanese cars have more problems than Fords. If you spend $500 on a laptop, you're probably gonna get a product that isnt designed to last all that long. Ive seen plenty of higher-end PCs and PC laptops last for years without hardware issues. OS is a different beast altogether and if you want to make a fair comparison there, talk to people who are running Linux or Hackintoshes with that hardware. The OS may be junk but computer hardware is computer hardware, everybody gets their RAM from the same handful of manufacturers, same with hard drives. People are kidding themselves if they think that by buying Apple hardware they're somehow getting more premium components. its all the same silicon at board level.

Why? There have always been faulty Apple products. My 2012 rMBP has had its screen replaced twice due to burn-in, and I can't use the integrated graphics card, because it freezes the computer to a halt, forcing me to reboot. Apple products have never been perfect.

Take it to apple they have a logic board replacement program for the integrated graphics cards they don't advertise
