Redesigned Mac Pro

It's black, or graphite colored, right? Does that mean future laptops will be following that design lead?

(the ring-around handle does seem problematic, since it creates a recessed area that would collect crumbs, paperclips, donuts, hoagies... I suspect someone will have to bring to market a domed shield for the top, with provisions for adequate ventilation. Is this a case of forum not serving function?)

Another irrational WANT product like the Cube. It took a while.

Given all the rest, gigabit Ethernet seems out of place. It should have 10Gbase-T.

But there seems to be a bit of place for legacy, namely eSATA (2, to keep the aesthetic).

Yeah because PIXAR will probably put it in their new Cartoon and call it ICAN.

For everyone here complaining...

...did you not see this?

If those two companies are behind it maybe everyone should just calm down until its released and then judge.

I also hope that since The Foundry is there Mari on Mac is now a possibility...

.. And the pictures of the RAM sticks look amazing. Might be up to 16GBs each? or even 32GB? (but just 4 channels feels bad. Except if it's time 2)

And all those pictures of open case feels like it is upgradeable. Atleast the RAM.

This is the first time in almost a decade that I've been excited about a Macintosh - or anything Apple. Dual AMD Fire..

Are you guys realizing the GPU power here? Apple, the company that until this moment didn't seem to have a clue that GPUs exist just put *two* of the most advanced professional GPUs in their top of the line Mac.

Sure it isn't a Mac Pro as we know it.. but as a workstation by any other name - wow.. just wow. I'm stunned.:apple:

Up to 12.

Some of you people really need to go to Apple's website and look at the darn thing.

"The new Mac Pro is muscle through and through, starting with the new-generation Intel Xeon E5 chipset. With configurations offering up to 12 cores of processing power, up to 40GB/s of PCI Express gen 3 bandwidth, and 256-bit-wide floating-point instructions, you’ll never be at a loss for speed."

12 cores not processors

How about the task of being a good value for what it's needed for? Every "pro" I know is careful with their money. That's how they stay in business. I can't imagine a "pro" paying a price premium for cosmetics when the fundamental unit is so messed up (no PCI slots in a pro workstation? Give me a break.)

This is not a "pro" machine. It's another iGadget aimed at people playing at being "pros." Pros actually need gear that you know, works.

Finally, Apple has the gonads to step into the future and walk away from old fashon PCI slots and not forcing users to buy components and features they'll never use. The ancients complained when Apple did away with the 5" floppy, the 3.5" floppy, and wouldn't even bother with Blu-ray. Apple remains on the leading edge of technology. If you want old, buy it from businesses still living in the past.

They say it can have "Up to 12 cores of processing power."
Intel E5's comes in 4,6 and 8 cores, so I'd say no -
There really is still possibility for 2 Intel Processor.

But in any case, this computer looks interesting, and at the same time, amazing. Just wondering the maximum RAM amount (and max size of the PCIe SSD)

ok, so the new intel processors don't go up to 12 cores? cuz if they allow for 2 processors then why wouldn't there be up to 16 cores?

well if there's 2 cpus then there should be 8 ram slots. if not, then just 4 slots

So let's guess the price. 6GB ATI Fire HD GPU's cost around 2500$, two of those would cost 5000$ alone. Add one CPU (This is not a dual CPU design I think), and you are already above 6K. Add memory, flash, chassis and I/O and you are looking at 8500$ minimum.

Don't forget about the PCIe flash storage. That **** is so expensive.

PCIe SSD! Oh my word this thing is gonna be fast. SATA3 pales in comparison.

And quad channel memory! Pros are gonna be happy!

Hm... Why not SATA-Express and DDR4 one might wonder.

At least it has hdmi and looks nice under the tv, will have to decide whether to get this or Xbox.

Hope they are going to design all the peripherals to go with it or it will look like a right hotch potch with cables all over the place. end of the white cable or can you get one in white.

I'd like to see one in the flesh. It sure looks tiny next to the current MP in the graphic used. I wonder whether reducing the amount of internal ports and chassis for upgrading means the internals can actually be produced much more cheaply?

I wonder if the cylindrical form factor will be off-putting for the pro market or those with many attached accessories. I'm thinking about racking and storage solutions that may be needed in offices, clearly no more stacking external HDDs on top of the machine. Probably not even be a good idea to put this new MP under the desk on the floor?

The WWDC prototype is chrome.

This as other have said is a next-gen Cube. Without internal expansion slots it will live or die on third party Thunderbolt 2 breakout boxes. Based on previous Thunderbolt support this might not go well.

I wish they had made this square in true Cube fashion. Stacking these next to each other is easy with a square footprint, but cylindrical is just awkward.

Huge update! They really went leaps ahead. Love the cooling strategy!

Can't wait to buy!

@ quagmire..

Maybe you should get facts right before spouting off
"Refined impact extrusion technologies are more material-efficient and give the polished aluminum enclosure its incredible shape and finish."

Have no idea about the designers mind, but the best E5 processor has 8 cores. (check ark.intel.com for more details)
There also might be trick of one six core with 12 threads (but they haven't done it before, why would they do it now?)

8 Ram slots sounds like Mac Pro. If they just don't want to add more cores, if they won't add more slots for Ram.

I don't know.

It's the G4 Cube evolved. Except this time they don't need to sacrifice performance for size and appearance. The original Cube failed because it was underpowered, but 13 years of technological advancements have finally made this stuff possible again.

Can't wait to see benchmark comparisons when it comes out.

The original Cube likely failed for a few reasons. First, price. You could get a similarly featured iMac with a screen as well as a low end Pro Tower for less. The Cube looked great and performance was nice as well, but you were paying a lot for the look.
