If you have such a total lack of understanding of Apple and their philosophy, then you are not and never have been an Apple fan. Enjoy the wonders of Windows 8 and a computer you slapped together on newegg

I've been waiting silently to see what they've been teasing at for so long now. I thought for sure that with Steve gone, they'd finally release a modest, modular "xMac" after all these years.

Instead, they release a MacMini Pro.

For years, I've been hoping for a simple desktop from Apple that would grow with my needs. I've never needed a workstation, but occasionally I like to replace my graphics card, or throw in an extra hard drive. I've needed a Mac Pro Lite. Apple consistently refused to deliver.

I've tried hackintoshes for the past 8 years, but they're always too much work to maintain, and too unstable. Eventually I just gave up.

And I didn't end up settling for an iMac, a Mac Pro, or a Mac Mini.

After DECADES of being an Apple fanboy - believing in the company when no one else did (much to the ridicule of all my friends) - Apple has made a Windows user out of me.

I would've never believed it to be possible.

Hate on me all you want. You are no longer my people.

i'm sure this product has enough "innovations" to make this an excellent product but from an designing point of view, it looks awful.

Steve Jobs would never approve such an ugly design, especially since this is the first the Mac Pro will "sit" on your desktop.

bring the silver aluminum back yo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They say it can have "Up to 12 cores of processing power."
Intel E5's comes in 4,6 and 8 cores, so I'd say no -
There really is still possibility for 2 Intel Processor.

But in any case, this computer looks interesting, and at the same time, amazing. Just wondering the maximum RAM amount (and max size of the PCIe SSD)

E5V2s will come in 2,4,6,8,10 and 12

Pleased and Impressed, Much Better than my best anticipations, with only exception there is no Rack-mount variant.

after Analyzing pictures and the few sneak peek material, ther are few thing not explicit:

  • CPU, obvious stand utpo 12 cores, that means upto 2x 6 Cores E5-EP
  • Memory, Still on STD DIMM ( god exist ), means upto 128 GB Ram When 32 Gb Stick Availba at that Speed (now current 32GB ECC DDR3 costs 600$ ea).
  • Storage, look like they recycled rMBP SSD's, no internal Spinner HDD, controversial on a WorkStation, btw nothing to cry, just connect some thunderbolt storage, no way to verify until iFixIt do what they do (if they colect the 6000$ minimun the cheapest MP will cost).
  • GPU seems Upgradable, obvious Non STD PCIe, hope more options than Ati later (as Intel Xeon-Phy).
  • To consider: PSU, seems it uses an oversized DC-DC converter as notebooks use, that's expensive but efficient, but MAYBE NOT AS RELIABLE AS that Old Fashioned Switching PSU.
  • ....
  • NO CD/DVD ... Who Cares (Please If You are NO REAL PRO abstent to comment).
  • No FireWire? not really, get one Thunderbolt to FW800 adapter, 30$ at AppleStore.
  • No PCIe expansion ? What is For? Thundebolt offer more bandwidth than any Storage Rig can use, and if you still need some specific PCIe device (1/x) as few video capture cards, you can get an Thunderbolt to PCIe adapter, as http://www.magma.com/expressbox-3t later will be availabe better exansion box for TB2 with suppor for PCIe4x.
  • Expensive... yes, but not due US Assembly, EDGE Hardware is Expensive.
I have take apart few bucks (12000) to order mine... maybe I'll spend abit more, but seems all we must wait until January at least to put our hands on this Baby CYLON-MAC.

It has four Firewire 2.0 ports.

This caters to pro workstations great. It's more powerful with smaller form factor.

For those that need more storage or add-ons you can plug it in.

Most studios use storage arrays anyway. So using TB2 will provide fast drive access.

This is prob the best use of technology ever seen! Minus the look of it.

Far be it for me to dredge back translucent computers, but looking at the intricate and well designed internals on Apples site, who thinks that this thing wrapped in polycarbonate would actually be pretty cool?

Made out of plastic? Seriously? Spend $1299 and get a nice aluminum iMac. $2499 gets me a plastic Mac Pro(predicting cost of the new Mac Pro)? Screw that.....

Machined aluminum, not plastic.

In regards to the number of cores, there are 12 core single chip Xeon processors coming. 6 core Xeons are so two years ago.

And it seems like those people who say, "That's it, I've reached the end of my rope, you've gone too far, GOODBYE" are still around to do the same dramatic exit over and over again.

I'll wait til I actually see what the product is before I start my rant.

wise words.

its funny how people think that the body is plastic when the Mac Pro clearly states

Machines Aluminium Enclosure
Refined impact extrusion technologies are more material-efficient and give the polished aluminum enclosure its incredible shape and finish.

so anyone who writes plastic can shut up.

and Apple can also shut up and take my money !

Easy now. You have to remember that many viewers in this forum only able to look at the pictures and comprehend single syllable words.

This looks like overkill for my use, so I now feel confident a loaded iMac will work just fine for me.

Will the Mac mini get the same treatment?

The Mac mini has already lost the optical drive, the only thing preventing Apple from doing a similar design with the Mac mini is the mechanical hard drive.

I can easily imagine the exact same machine, but shorter and with a quad-core i7 and the same GPU as the high-end 27" iMac.

The cost could be kept low if they use the exact same extrusions as the new Mac Pro (internal triangular heatsink and outer shell), but make the whole computer shorter.

Anyone else spot the similarity of the new Mac Pro and the Apple campus?

Wow, this thing is hideous.

At least I can rest assured that my Mac Pro 5,1 is going to hold its value for a while, especially with all the people who have a lot invested in video hardware.

its 2013, expandabilty is Thunderbolt.

Well, if you're idea of "expandabilty" is an overpriced drive for time machine, then I guess you're right.

But you realize there's not much to expand to at this point, right? Now we're going to rely on 3rd party manufacturers in order to get things out of that trashcan. And it's going to cost a fortune. Let's put away our fanboy hats and be realistic at least.

One thing I can tell you for sure, though: right now, my Mac Pro is neat and tidy and everything is inside the box. This thing, to be usable, is going to be a mess of parts and cables, like the Mac Mini is. A nice little box with a mess of crap hanging out the back of it. Yuk.

Wow it's fugly, though.

EDIT: Maybe I'm being a little hard on the look of it. The pictures probably don't do it justice. It will be interesting to see how long it takes for 3rd party manufacturers to provide some ways out of this thing, though.

I have not read this topic yet. I am sure the never ending joke will be the Mac can, calling it a trash can etc. It does not look bad.

Might be right. They haven't told about them yet. Officially.

I'm sorry if I was right, I was going with the models found from Intel's website.

But I'd still say it wouldn't be bad even with that way. Maybe better.

You think PCI-Express expandability is dismissable to "real Pro's"? You must not work in audio production, engineering, rendering, programming or structural architecture. What kind of Pro are you? A pro spender for sure, supposedly at least. And a pro Apple defender... maybe not so much.

Tell all the production hardware manufacturers to stop what they're doing and support ThunderBolt. Come back in four years when their new ThunderBolt products have passed R&D and are on the market. After that you can tell me I'm wrong. And no offense, but my professional work station shouldn't have a bunch of thunderbolt hubs and adapters and wires sticking out of it. That makes it look less like professional grade and more like a Sega 32x.

The new Mac Pro: it has thunderbolt add-ons.

So is it true that the GPU's are on board? I recall discussing Thunderbolt with someone and they mentioned that onboard GPU's are required for technical reasons. If I can't upgrade my system, especially if the price tag rises, that will be disappointing. I'm surprised they went all PCIe Flash and no room for internal SATA III 3.5" drives. That sucks for us who have 4 HDD bays and a SSD drive in an optical bay. Plus film editors still need Blu-Ray burners. Thunderbolt enclosures and storage is still very pricey.
