There is a widget that will do this for you, its good to see it included though.

I know about that widget, but for some reason, my iMac display pops right back up  ... it doesn't stay in display sleep. So my current method is setting Energy Saver to display sleep after 1 minute. It's only been a minor inconvenience really, so the Leopard feature is more just a win out of principle :)

I know Apple doesn't have to offer the discount, but still I'm a little pissed. A little earlier of a warning would have been nice. I think Apple read all of the posts here yesterday about people using the discount when they don't qualify. Good job, MacRumorers!

(I'm so joking about that last part. Still pissed though)

exactly. If apple had given early warning about it would of been helpful. But just taking it away completely out of the blue hurts. Students where expecting it to be at most $80. The price keeping in line with what it been in the past.

At the huge price increase I would expect to see some of the torrent sites very busy the days following the 26th with a lot of students who had planned on paying 80 for Leopard.

I still can not understand how people do not understand why the students are complaining. It like you took your car in to get a repair job and where told it cost you 500 bucks. You go back the next day and are not told you own 1000 bucks. You had budgeted and planned on spending 500 to fix ones car but 1000 is going to screw over the budgeting completely. (yes I am using it as example but it should make the point)

To all all Education Discount Whiners:

Apple has announced that they will continue to sell the new release of Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard) for the foreseeable future.

If at this time you find yourself not able to afford the current Education Pricing, Apple suggest that you be patient and SAVE UP TO BUY IT AT A LATER DATE WHEN YOU CAN AFFORD IT!

Thats just UNHEARD of!! How dare you suggest people that claim they cant afford another $36 actually wait a while before getting it. What are they going to do on Oct 26 when everyone else has Leopard and they are still *stuck* with Tiger? Will there be riots in the streets? Mass suicides? Oh the humanity!!!!

No, I dont understand. This will be my last post about this because its stupid to expect us to believe you can afford $80 (what you claim you budgeted) but you cant afford another $36.

If an extra $36 if a deal breaker because you just absolutely cannot afford another penny, then as I said, YOU SHOULDNT BE SPENDING THE INITAL $80 TO BEGIN WITH.

I said macs are most for riches, and nobody agree. do you know what $36 can buy you?

you can have breakfast for a month

or a month's coffee

or a 2GB SD card

or a monthly bus pass

or 20 $ movies, or 7 day time movies

one month of a cellphone bill

....

If you buy a qualifying Mac between October 1, 2007 and December 29, 2007, and it does not include Mac OS X Leopard, you're eligible to get Leopard after it's released for just £5.95.

I got my new Macbook Pro on September 21st, I knew this would happen but needed it. What sucks though is it's had to go straight into shop as it had a faulty superdrive so i'm going without for 2 weeks anyway.

Do you think it's worth kicking up a stink?

At least they are finally going to ship it.

Not happy about the EDU pricing either. Although I'm a faculty member, I'm not going to complain. But I think this will drive more students to pirate than purchase.

And to those of you who think college students just spend money on alcohol and party all the time, please rethink and look around a college campus. Yes, there are many that make poor financial decisions, but there are also a lot of "non-traditional" college students - single parents and low-income students trying to make a life better for themselves by working 2 jobs and going to college to get a degree to make a better life for themselves and their family. To these people every dollar counts (even though they don't have to upgrade).

Yes, Apple doesn't owe anything to education patrons, but it was a nice gesture. I agree that only a $13 dollar discount is worse than no discount at all. Oh well, Apple is playing like the "big dogs" now

It's not like it went on sale today. You have been given a reasonable amount of time to plan/budget accordingly.

Save up, buy it when you can afford it.

GET A PART TIME JOB!!

So you'd be cool with the list price being $165?

How about $201?

$237?

They've reduced the education discount for the OS, many students will be annoyed. Including the non-entitled-but-actually-quite-poor ones in grad school.

Do you have any idea how much beer $36 is?
Yes I need it. No I'm not being cheeky.

I'm not going to, BECAUSE I CAN'T AFFORD IT.

Well that's great. I wish I could get rid of my meal plan (since I only use like half of it because the food sucks balls, but we're ****ing required to have it. $1500 a semester.

I went and bought this expensive ****ing apple computer partially because they usually are good to students, but now they're pretty much saying "**** you".

$40 is a lot of money to someone who has little income and lots of expenses ($500+ in books a semester, spending money for food).

Again, I don't understand this rationale. You bought an Apple computer partially because they usually good to students? What kind of logic is that? If I may be so bold, you bought a mac because they offered you a product at a price that you found desirable. Not because they were "nice" to those poor, hard working university students.

And if that is no longer true, what's with the outrage? What are you going to do, switch to Vista? All over $40 and a giant chip on your shoulder? Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face.

If you're advocating stealing Leopard because you can't afford the extra $40, I say bull****. You were never going to buy Leopard in the first place. If the price increase is so unpalatable, again, don't buy it. I don't understand what is so hard. Apple knows a lot about running their business, they know by increasing prices, a certain number of people will steal it instead. But they have decided that the revenue generated by the honest, outweighs the "loss" by the thieves.

So if I got it straight an extra $36 is ok. Where do you draw the line. an extra 50, 60 ect. Come on what is your arbitray number you would use.

Problem with your line of thinking is that nickeling and diming crap like that adds up fast and is what kills and $36 is a huge amount of change.

Even though it's money "already" spent, I'm happy with the way this has come full circle for me...

Note the "estimated tax" line. With tax jurisdictions differing city by city, county by county, state by state, and sometimes different tax rates for different parts of a county, even the massive XServe array that is the Apple Store sometimes has to recalculate tax at time of invoice.

How can you afford a MBP, but you can't afford $36? That's like avoiding fast food for a week and eating ramen noodles or not drinking for one night...... It's not that hard to save $40 if you just cut out some other stuff.

My wife and I "can't afford" a MBP like you, so we had to 'settle' for an iMac. Why doesn't :apple: cater to the people who already went through college and can't afford crap because of their student loans? I guess iHate Apple too!!! (note heavy dosage of sarcasm)

Which build is GM?

OK - hoping to change the direction of the thread a little bit.

Does this mean that 9A559 is the GM build? Are there any builds out there that are any newer? I wouldn't be surprised if there were slightly tweaked internal builds, but they have to know which one is to be able to produce and ship within 10 days...right?

I worked all summer and made $1500 which I spent on the MBP since my ****ing iBook died.

Now you'll say "should have bought a macbook, you don't need pro". Well I need the dedicated graphics card for final cut since I'm a film student.

That build is said to be Mac OS X Leopard build 9A581.

Will there be a delay for the release in Canada and other countries or will I be able to get my happy little hands on this on the 26th as well?

Oh my god, we are talking about an EDU difference of less than $50!!

I am SORRY, Paris, but get a freakin job. I put myself through private university with 2 jobs PLUS a work study job. I understand that finances can be tight, but if Leopard has meant that much to you, you couldn't have saved the money in the past year?

B.S.

If you strategically planned your finances by assuming Apple would repeat the $69 EDU price, than you made a poor prediction. One look at the iPod EDU prices, iLife EDU prices, and other software EDU prices (e.g., Logic Studio) would have told you that Apple's trend is to severely reduce EDU discounts. Given that information, I would have budgeted a full $129 for Leopard, knowing that almost certainly I would be over budget by SOME amount (the rest would go to booze to celebrate Leopard!). Please tell me you EDU whiners aren't business majors, because if you can't get the hint from a blatant trend like EDU benefit reduction, I fear what you'll do to our market when you graduate. :)

I don't want to pull the "these kids todays have such a sense of entitlement" card, but... ok... card pulled.

Just an additional note to the students looking for a better Educational discount: Why don't you just sign up for an Apple ADC Student Membership? It's only $99 and for that you get Leopard for free and lots of other goodies like monthly CD's with the latest builds, as well as a once-in-a-lifetime huge discount on pro Macs, should you want to buy one.

Even if you get it just for leopard it's still a $17 discount off the normal EDU price.

PS I don't know if anyone else mentioned this yet because I only just glanced over the last pages

truthfully i was alright with paying 70$ for a os. but im not ok with paying 100+ so me personally will be bootlegging. for everyone that thanks apple is still a god company, that there so great just think about two things. quality of service hardware and customer has went down the drain in the past years, and prices have went up. still a good company but not as good as they once were.

Fair enough. And I hope that you'll donate that $70 to charity or else you're just pirating software with under the guise of a poor victim when in fact you're no different from a fully-employed, wage-earning pirate.

Seriously students, most of us have been there ourselves. I bought a Power Macintosh 6200 running OS 8 when my LC475 died. And that was back in 2002 when everyone else was enjoying the iMac G4s. I was a poor student so I worked with what I had.

If you think you deserve pity and martyrdom because you can't afford the addition ~$40 for the brand new OS for your machines, get some perspective. Seriously.

Yes I need it. No I'm not being cheeky.

I think the people attacking the students should have it put in perspective.

How would you all feel if the price of leopard was $205 instead of the $130 that you where expecting. $205 is what it would cost you if you had a %50 price increase and if you believe like voodoo if can not afford the extra $75 could not afford the $130 to begin with.

129 euros?
That's 20% higher than the US price!! (and yes, i did include sales tax in the equation)
FORGET IT APPLE!!
