For the students who are crying...This is just Sad. If you cant afford it..you dont get it..SIMPLE! You dont need to do anything you are currently doing on your mac now. Nobody is forcing you to buy it now, so just wait till you can afford it.

You're completely ignorant. You do realize that for many students this is the LAST version of OS X that their computers might run because of Apple's growing lack of support for the PowerPC processor. I want to purchase it but because I, unlike many Mac users, am spending 30,000 dollars a year on my education. When I spend that much money and essentially am promoting Apple all over my university, I deserve a better cut then 13 dollars.

Ignorant?? Like I said...You dont NEED it...you Just WANT it.
If you cant afford it...you dont NEED to buy it. Buying it or not doesnt effect you passing any classes in your schooling.

seems very simple to me.

...
Yeah I expect this OS release of apple to have a true pirating problem. I believe apple is going to have a very noticeable lost to pirating. Heck I would not be surprised to see future releases of OSX to have anti-pirating activation crap in them because of increase in pirated versions of leopard that will be out there.

Maybe Apple is beating people to the punch and charging students more for EDU since they think that a good amount of them that buy it, will spread it around the local uni? Just a thought

Umm, so what was the "secret" that Jobs spoke of when making the initial OS 10.5 announcement. All, but dropped?

Steve came on stage and proclaimed "There is no spoon." Everyone freaked.

:p

College & University Stores Are Selling Leopard For $69 Just Like Always

You gotta love students with a Macbook pro and Photoshop CS3 complaining about $40. And half act like they're so impoverished that they stand in lines waiting for bread or something. If that's the case buying an operating system shouldn't even be a consideration. I think it sounds kind of odd for the typical student to be buying an operation system anyway. Tiger is grrrreat! And will do fine for your needs.
Dumbest part of their argument is that almost all the college bookstores are still going to sell it for $69. So they are really complaining about nothing. Turns out that the $116 price at the online Apple Ed Store does not translate to the same higher price at the college and university stores - including some of their online stores as well. Still only going to cost $69 in the real brick & mortar academia stores.

Yea, he's totally using Leopard and trying to ******** us.

I am spending $30,000+ a year on my mortgage and bills and to feed and clothe my family. So becuase I spend so much money just to live my life, does that mean that I deserve a discount too? If I do, then where is my discount and maybe I should start whining about not getting one too!

that's just a script, it doesn't do anything by itself

Wow, all of that 30K is going towards promoting Apple? I think you at least deserve a free MBP for your trouble.

I would like to know how he thinks he's promoting Apple? Just by using their product? In that case we are all promoting all the companies products that we use and should all get discounts on everything!

Just pre-ordered the Family Pack. Says it will be here by the 26th, which is great! But for those expecting to see the package on your doorstep when you get home, heed the warning:

Delivery Note:
Most shipments require a signature on delivery. However, we offer an easy way to sign for your package even if you can't be present. Click here for details.

Might want to fill out the signature form if you aren't going to be home...... Would hate to see teary-eyed posts from people who didn't know, and missed the delivery.

Does this work worldwide or just on the Apple US store? If not, how do you do it on the UK store?

About the Pirating: Mac OS has been tossed around for years (especially when it was System instead of Mac OS). I remember getting the newest OS on a series of floppies back when...and those were a heck of a lot easier to get a hold of than now. Think about it: back then, everyone had an 800k or 1.4 MB drive. Now, with 10.5 coming out on DL discs, only those of us that have purchased a Mac within the last year and a half could even potentially burn one of those. Unless some guy is cranking out mass copies of this thing for everyone, I think the usual amount of distribution is going to take place. One guy buys it, gives it to 2 or 3 people, and that's it. There is no reason to think that there will be massive distribution.

Well am a student and I paid my £58 and was more than happy to do so. I work three days a week to support myself and I think £58 for an OS is amazing. I cant wait to get it through the post and then I will be off to apple regent street for the launch party Yeah :D :D :D

Apparently Leopard doesn't include spell-check.

In the list of 300 features, under Parental Controls:

"Dynamic Web Filter
Protect your children from websites with unsuitable content. Apple technology automatically trys to detect inappropriate content and prevents those web pages from appearing."

"trys"?!

The big question is, does it protect children from unsuitable spelling? :p

The feature you quoted is to stop your children for accessing pr0n, not bad spelling. And spell check was included with Tiger so it stands to reason that it will be included with Leopard, it's just not a new feature

looks like he used webclip in Leopard although he says he's running tiger

His desktop looks a lot like "Grass".

Maybe Apple is beating people to the punch and charging students more for EDU since they think that a good amount of them that buy it, will spread it around the local uni? Just a thought

They will do now, that's for sure.

I have 2 questions

What time should I get to the apple store in the Palisades Mall to get a decent spot on line?

What type of things do they do to hype up the event at the store? Contests?

Just noticed this most of the way down on the 300+ new features page...

Hot Corner for Sleep Display

Get more use out of those hot corners. In addition to launching Exposé or starting a screen saver, you can now use hot corners to put your display to sleep.

Does this mean FINALLY there's a way to put an iMac's display to sleep?!?!
I used to use a third party app called the LightMe Daemon in Tiger that let you hit a keystroke to put the display to sleep. But it's nice to see this behavior is built right in to Leopard.

I have a question... although you guys may not be able to answer it :)

I have an pre-order on leopard - I live in Denmark. Will I receive leopard on the release-date? It would be heartbreaking not to be able to use leopard on release, and then see all you guys playing with it! :)

I actively tell my friends they should get a Mac whenever they're thinking of getting a new computer...having a Mac in class is waaaaay more promotive than that; tons of people who sat next to me at the beginning of last school year (when I first got the Macbook) made comments about how bad Macs are, now they all want or own one...

yeah i know what you mean. people are always looking at my with my mac in class

Indeed. These complaints are trivial. What's even more bizarre is that the most vocal of complainers here have wasted a lot of time bashing away in this thread trying to gain sympathy. Time they could instead have used up more productively by working some extra hours to earn the $40-50 needed.

I also agree with Bosox3. You don't need it... you want it. It is that simple.

No sympathy here... sorry...

Umm, I think you missed the joke - his point was that Apple's feature description included a typo (trys instead of tries).

You're missing the point though...you have a full-time job and probably get paid a fairly good amount. Not to mention your wife probably also works and earns a salary. A student on the other hand either has no time to work, or has to work to try to pay off his or her loans/school bills. I know for me when I was in college, I didn't have time to get a job because I had practice in the AM before classes, and practice in the PM after classes, then I would eat dinner and then go back to my dorm and do homework...so I didn't really have time to get job, sorry.

So for you to compare yourself to a student isn't really relevant.
