Im estatic! I wasnt really planning on buying Leopard until late November/December, because I was saving to get some more ram, but I was quite disappointed to see that that education discount was only like 15 bucks or so. So from a suggestion from another post, I went to the up to date page on Apples site just to see what it would say when I entered my serial number. And to my delight, I saw it was only $9.95! I immediatly purchased it just incase they updated their system or something, noting all purchases before Oct 1 (The date they list that you are entitled to the 9.95 update price) lol. So I urge anybody who atleast purchased their Mac's in September to try also.

I purchased my MBP Sept 7, 2007 I might add.

As a Japanese, the addition of Japanese and English-Japanese dictionaries alone is huge ! It alone costs $50 or something if you buy it separately, right ? How much does it cost to get New American Oxford Dictionary and Thesaurus digitally ?

Anyhow, thank you for paying for my Japanese dictionary, you guys :)

I'm Swedish, but I was VERY glad to see the inclusion of Japanese dictionaries in Leopard. I'd love them to add Korean dictionaries as well, but I guess that might take a while. Ah well, the Japanese dictionaries will be extremely helpful nonetheless :D

Now I just started reading the "300+ new features"-page, and I don't know what the hell the marketing departement did there. Just some great advertising from that page:

2 new features:
"Mouse Controls for Exposé
Control Exposé with any button on your mouse. Specify the mouse controls in the Exposé and Spaces pane in System Preferences."

"Mouse Controls for Dashboard
Launch your Dashboard widgets with any button on your mouse. Specify the mouse controls in the Exposé and Spaces pane in System Preferences."

Well, I'm pretty damn sure I have my middle mouse button set to do Exposé currently, and I'm also pretty sure the same applies to Dashboard on another machine.

And in some cases I really think they should've kept quiet. I wasn't aware, that some things won't work in Tiger, I consider basic (e.g. autosaving in TextEdit, removing history items periodically in Safari).

Nevertheless, I will get it, as soon as an updated version is sent to DVD pressing (I guess that will be around 10.5.3).

I don't know... Autosaving in a basic, free-with-the-OS text editor is not common.

TextEditor is becoming quite useful. Spell check, grammar check, ODF support, autosave etc...

I never even knew that there was a student discount. Go figure  (@me, not any of you or apple)

Anyone heard about any sort of store event like what they did for Tiger? I'll try to read/search through the 32 pages of this thread.

yes there is supposed to be a Leopard event at 6PM in all the apple stores

That's 6pm local time so we'll have it installed when you'll still be having your lunch!:)

Kidding on because I've got a clunky old iMac G3 so Tiger is the end of the road for it. :(

Good excuse to go and get a MacBook for my birthday/Christmas :D

Killer New Feature!!!

Just noticed this most of the way down on the 300+ new features page...

Hot Corner for Sleep Display

Get more use out of those hot corners. In addition to launching Exposé or starting a screen saver, you can now use hot corners to put your display to sleep.

Does this mean FINALLY there's a way to put an iMac's display to sleep?!?!

One of my friend is going to the US to visit a friend next week. I'll purchase Leopard on amazon at $109 and have it delivered at his friend's place. That's
76.68€. If I'd have bought it in France, I would have paid 129€ !!! That's over 40% off !!!

WOOOHOOOOO :p

As for the price of Apple's software... I really don't think the erosion of the educational discount can be attributed to people "abusing" the system. I'd say this move is partly Apple's greed, and partly a reflection of the larger trend toward eliminating student discounts altogether. One can also argue for increased R&D costs. Most brick-and-mortar retailers have already eliminated these discounts, if they ever had them to begin with; with profit margins shrinking due to severe competition in the marketplace, there's less fat to trim. Hardware and software sold or donated below-cost is going to go straight to institutions, not to individuals.

Apple's greed is changing my opinion and loyalty to them... usr since '92 - they always 'came through' for me in the past - now it seems they just want to 'stick it to us'

Example: iphone initial price..

is 1.2ghz better than 867mhz???:p

Sure is :D

There was an online article a few weeks ago using iPod's to show changes in prices over the world. The article listed a lot of countries concluding the cheapest spot for a 4GB nano (USD$149) was Hong Kong (cheaper than the US) and the most expensive Brazil (more than double).

My point in all of this ? The Leopard copy I pre-ordered cost me $128, for the standard version. I saved $1 off the US-listed price. :)

Maybe for smaller companies - I would agree - but apple is posting record profits...

Just because a company is making a lot of money right now doesn't mean they should lower their prices because your not... don't you know how the world works ?

Apparently Leopard doesn't include spell-check.

In the list of 300 features, under Parental Controls:

"Dynamic Web Filter
Protect your children from websites with unsuitable content. Apple technology automatically trys to detect inappropriate content and prevents those web pages from appearing."

"trys"?!

The big question is, does it protect children from unsuitable spelling? :p

Your welcome... Anytime...

I'm a college student paying for everything on my own.

I bought Leopard at $116. Was I dissapointed? A bit. Am I going to whine about it? No!

I'm getting a discount, on an already comparitively cheap piece of wonderful software that I am choosing to PRE-ORDER. Come on people! It isn't even out yet--why make a big deal about the cost and you not being able to afford it? Wait, then! It's called priorities. If you need money for groceries, buy groceries. You don't "need" a new operating system. Tiger works wonderfully.

You're in the real world now, everything isn't handed to you at half cost. Be glad you get anything off, and be glad you have the opportunity to go to school and actually considering purchasing a piece of software (even before it's out) and posting on a forum about how sad you are that it'll cost a bit more.

Thank you for that! I feel exactly the same way.

Yes, that's AWESOME! I've wanted that to be built into the OS ever since I got my first Mac. (an eMac)

I found this awesome app called Dockables that lets you put icons in your dock for sleep, restart, display sleep, etc. I don't have it in my dock, though. I assigned the display sleep to a keyboard shortcut using QuickSilver. It's a good solution to use until Leopard arrives. I've been using it a while now.
