Whatever your views on Tim Cook or Apple more generally, I think we can all agree that heads need to roll over this... what a colossal **** up!

How is this the case when the image of it is literally on the back of the box of the brand new AirPods??

Epic Fail Apple
Some Airpod 2s have a 2018 manufacture date on the box. So at minimum, they were made 4 months ago.

Give Apple credit, they pulled the plug on a product they could not produce to their satisfaction. That is much better than throwing good money after bad. Though the concept of the AirPower sounds very interesting, Apple cannot produced to their specs it is smart they stopped it; much business sense. Before bashing Apple look at other companies that have dropped products, think GM, Ford, Chrysler, Motorola, the list goes on. Then there are companies with too much hubris not to let go of doomed products then they lose tons of money; remember the saying “Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.”

Shows how much you or the average poster knows. Those AirPods boxes were manufactured as far back as September. Newer ones have no such picture or reference.

They print boxes for unannounced products 7 months in advance?

Shows how much the average poster know..... I said AirPods 2

Man I feel bad for the apple faithful who haven't bought any type of wireless charger waiting for this thing. I've seen a few on this forum stating as such.

That's if you make assumptions about what they actually said...

"After much effort, we've concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have cancelled the project."

"high standards" is so nebulous as to be meaningless. It could mean anything from a technical aspect to their inability to contract with a vendor to produce them at their price point.

This is Qi charger we're talking about... not exactly rocket-science.
Then why hasn't anyone else come out with something identical?

There are many 3rd party chargers that allow multiple devices to charge simultaneously.
Let's not put on airs here.

1. There are some products that have simply combined multiple individual charging spots into a singular casing. Not exactly earth shattering. And not at all what Apple was pitching.

2. Virtually none of them can charge an Apple Watch, and those that claim to be able to, usually can't.

3. A quick scan of the price tag and the reviews for the products that pretend to be an AirPower alternative tell you the real story. They are all imitation junk. I've done more than scan and tried some of them, and returned them all.

I have ordered the product from Nomad which again does not even come close to what Apple promised, but looks decent by comparison to the rest of the market.

In the end, even Apple couldn't even come close to what Apple was promising, and cancelled it. Let's not pretend there is even a close comparison on the market, or that what is on the market is even remotely good.

LOL but all these other companies including no-name Chinese and Korean brands can? I’ve seen plenty of similar products.

Indeed, and then I look at the reviews online and they are all breaking after a couple of weeks. No thanks. Yet if Apple HAD released something that had lesser build quality or overheated, people would be howling about that.

This is sad news and a case study in vaporware. I hate to say it, but you know it’s coming. A headline on MacRumors will one day say: “Apple Officially Cancels Mac.”
They will never cancel Mac, because then how would developers make all those apps for the iPhone?

Somebody enlighten me... what was the big deal about an Apple wireless charger? Like, what was somebody waiting for this instead of just using something else? It's not like something that actually makes a physical connection with your device to charge it—what was the expectation that Apple was going to do something different or special?

Another Apple product failure.
At least they canceled before launching.

When are they canceling the Macbooks with the new Keyboards?

This shows how lame the product engineers have become at Apple.
With problem after problems in almost every product (except Watches and phones)

Look at the pathetic upgrades they announce the entire week before the event.

What about the people who ordered AirPods with wireless charging under the assumption that AirPower was following. Seems like a cluster...

I'm pretty sure they knew a while ago that this thing was going to get cancelled, but waited until after the initial wave of airpod orders to announce it. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if Apple orchestrated that leak about airpower going in to production... Sneaky bastards.

Can someone explain why is it so hard to make a charging pad that charges two or more devices at once? Is it because of excessive heat or other engineering difficulties?

Edit: "I’ve heard that they ran too hot because the 3D charging coils in close proximity to one another required very, very cautious power management."

Hmm
