What the hell? How do you go to all that effort, even so much as to aquire naming rights for it, only to abandon it at a time when people were expecting an imminent launch? This seems like a really bad waste of time and more importantly resources that could have been better spent elsewhere.

Perhaps they use different technologies.

I actually backed that project, I am waiting to receive 2... I think the difference is that you have to place the apple watch in a specific part of the charger... With airpower you would have been able to place the watch, phone, airpods anywhere on the mat.

I prefer this one though because the watch charger pops up and allows me to charge with bands that don't open up... with the airpower that wouldn't have been possible since you had to lay the watch flat.

Some people are saying "no one should be surprised" this was canceled. Why shouldn't we be surprised? Not only did they include pictures and mentions of it on their other products, recent rumors actually suggested it was going into production and was going to be released soon. This is a surprise. Everyone knows they were having problems with it, but recent evidence suggested it was going to be released soon. I was not expecting it to be canceled.

Just sold the Apple Watch charging dock

Lol why would you do that? I was looking forward to getting an AirPower mat for my iPhone and AirPods but I do love my Watch dock and was thinking of keeping it. I left the decision to when we actually had something to decide on.

I don’t understand what the problem is here. Apple just needs sensors in the air power and senses in the devices that determine exactly the location on the power mat. They spend billions in research. What is going on ?
Start with three specific interchangeable locations for version 1. Then version two, place anywhere.

Good. Time to move on. Better than releasing a compromised product. This supports my theory that the recent AirPod update was really meant for 2018 (devices were manufactured then and Apple isn't known to hold inventory) and they wanted to release them both last year. Once AirPower wasn't happening, they had to push them out. Unfortunately, AirPods 1.5 may soon be phased out with AirPods 2 coming later this year.

I have a feeling that “AirPods 1.5” will still be sold along side “AirPods 2”. The extra features, maybe water proofing, noise cancellation etc simply costing more money. Especially when the addition of a simple wireless charging case pushed up the price of “AirPods 1.5”.

It’s been the Apple way in recent times. We shall soon see!

Does anyone know of any existing 2 device wireless charger? Then I can use that for my iPhone and AirPods, and I’ll continue to use my old Watch charger for the Apple Watch, which is better anyway as it allows for the nightstand mode

Well, that saved me probably £200.

It seems to be a very weird time at Apple right now. The lacklustre event recently - announcing shows with no clips and no pricing on the streaming thing. Apple News with only US support and heavyweight newspapers missing, the uneasiness of getting into the debt business (dress it up anyway you want, Apple - that's what it is) and now this sad debacle comes to an end where the richest company on the planet with access to some of the best engineering minds in the world cannot make a charging mat.

Well, at least we have Oprah's Book Club to look forward to.
