Yeah, let's bust out the violin for people who rushed to pre-order a product using an accessory that wasn't even released yet. You know what they say about people who assume things....

Better yet, let’s bust out the class action lawsuits.

And it wasn’t assumed, it was marketed and promised by Apple.

Uhhh ... so printing AirPower compatibility on the AirPods 2 packaging *and* including an AirPower diagram on the wireless charging case packaging is tantamount to an unreasonable assumption AirPower release was imminent? A LOT of people only ordered the wireless charging version after the packaging made the news circuits.
That's why they couldn't sit on it too long. Everyone who owns AirPods with the charging case are within the return period.

Ultimately it's CEO who decides.
Sure ultimately the buck stops with the CEO but I doubt Cook made the final call on it being included in the keynote. Or if he did it was because the rest of the executive team felt comfortable announcing it.
I mean, realistically someone convinced him this was a good idea. However, Tim Cook ultimately has to give the go ahead. I do think this would be a case where someone in Phil Schiller's department might fall on the sword, though.
But it was Dan Riccio who made the announcement. He’s the head of HW engineering but notably is never on stage and never quoted in press releases. The back story on this would be fascinating. Did engineers over promise to Riccio who in turn then over promised to Schiller? Did Schiller’s team put pressure on HW engineering where they felt like they had to give them something to announce?

You do know they make other wireless charging pads/stands that will work with AirPods, right? Don't you think its just a little bit ridiculous to order headphones and then want to return them when Apple cancels a wireless charging pad that several other companies have already created.

I just realized, once the iPhone 11 has power sharing as rumored, AirPower won’t be necessary. Just place your phone on a wireless charging pad and place your AirPods on your phone. You might still need a separate charger for the Apple Watch though.

Anyone who ordered the wireless case because of AirPower is a moron. The good thing is they don’t require AirPower to work. So either return the case or use a 3rd party charging mat.

It’s not a matter of imagining anything. I was asking what your cutoff is.

How far away must your phone be able to charge to be considered “real” wireless?
It sounds like you're arguing semantics. Yes, the word "wireless" is technically accurate, but these charging mats don't fulfill the expected meaning of wireless compared to what I already know (wifi, LTE, airplay, etc). When something is called wireless, I expect it to work like all the other wireless devices I have.

Do we know why AirPods or Apple Watch can’t already charge using the back of existing iPhones that support wireless charging?

Because that would be enough for me to not return my AirPods 2.

So, I don't work for Apple. I work closely with the marketing department at a Fortune 200 tech company.

Here's what I think.
  • Schiller's team is responsible for determining what the consumers want and likely have a major say in what gets announced at keynotes
  • John Gruber posted in September of 2018 that AirPods were "****ed" and multiple engineers at the company said it was impossible. His "little birdies" appeared to have "I told you so" moments.
  • AirPower was announced in 2017 with a launch in 2018. I doubt Engineering made the decision to announce so early. That seems like something Marketing would dictate.
  • While Dan Riccio made the announcements, I get the feeling he's safe in this and they just want someone in a place of prominence who didn't promise anything publicly to explain the situation.
  • Last and probably not least, I feel that this situation is bad but not terrible because AirPower is an accessory. The problem is we're past peak Apple craze. Apple can't quietly bury announcements anymore.

You seem unaware that AirPower wasn't intended to merely be yet another charging pad. You also seem unaware that the very box of AirPods showed an Airpower pad, not a random charging pad by another company. And you also seem unaware that Apple has a strong sense of brand loyalty amongst much of their customer base. You seem unaware of quite a bit, yet you bark at Apple fans who bought a product based on the premise that a specific Apple counterpart product would also be made available for sale.

Yes, how dare these people want to return an item. You should spend more time chastising strangers for not having identical purchasing habits as you.

A+

You're wrong. Let me explain:
  • Google is starting to resemble Apple
  • Apple is starting to resemble Nokia
Actually, Google just cut a lot of its hardware. They're making Pixels, but the Pixel Slate was an unmitigated disaster.

In fact, the Pixel Slate is actually a worst case scenario because it's a core product. At least with AirPower, you're talking about an accessory.

No they can’t. Different coil is needed.

Better yet, let’s bust out the class action lawsuits.

Good luck with those lawsuits. Let me know how that works out for you.

Lesson here kids: This is what happens when people jump the gun and pre-order to have the newest, coolest technology on the block. This right here is why Apple Koolaid drinkers get the criticism they do*

*Disclaimer: I own multiple Apple products, and can afford them.

There are multiple cheap wireless charging pads. Just buy a cheap one for your AirPods, problem solved

I don't understand. Why cancel to project altogether? Did it turn out that this type of device just isn't feasible, or that it wasn't worth the R&D cost? Sounds like the former.

This is an April fools joke-- if they knew this today, they knew it a month ago and wouldn't advertise it on the AirPods 2 box. They know how thirsty the tech media is for this.

On Monday prepare to hear "April Fools!"-- AirPower is shipping TODAY!

This is NOT an April Fool's joke:

1) The cancellation announcement will adversely affect the stock price of the potential suppliers. The SEC doesn't consider intentionally misleading product announcements, or cancellations, "jokes";
2) The cancellation announcement might adversely affect Apple's stock price. Again, the SEC doesn't have much of a sense of humor regarding intentionally misleading announcements;
3) Apple's announcement of cancellation will inevitably lead to some returns of the wireless charging cases over the weekend, not something Apple would consider "funny";
4) The explanation of the overheating would never be put forth if untrue, as it would poison future sales, even if later retracted.

I think it's ridiculous you expect other people to agree with your sense of the ridiculous.

Apple should go back to not announcing products until they are ready. But otherwise, who care, it’s really not a big deal. For those of you who insist you bought an apple watch, iPhone X, and air pods just because you thought a wireless charger that could accommodate all three at once was coming, you’re idiots.
