That was amateurish, like some crowdfunding projects, to announce a product before even knowing it's technologically feasible.

But in the corporate world, sometimes the best outcome of a project is a canceled project. If the goals are not achievable or no longer make sense, just move on.

Odd considering what it says on the box of my wireless Charging Case for Airpods that I just bought

2009 - Palm has the first smartphone with inductive charging, truly visionary.

2019 - Apple is late almost a decade to the inductive charging party, and fails to innovate and bring anything new to the table.

Where is the Apple that was constantly ahead of its time?

Doesn't Apple Watch already have a wireless charging solution? The stand or whatever it is?

IMO, Apple should try to salvage its development time into AirPower and come out with a single device solution. Particularly for the iPhone. Seems silly now that iPhones can be charged wirelessly and there's no 1st party wireless charging product for it.

So now what with the AirPods wireless charging option?

Think I may return mine and get the non wireless version.

I mean, I, too, am disappointed that I won't have a one-mat solution on my nightstand, but since the wireless case works with any Qi-enabled charging mat, I don't necessarily see a problem with keeping my AirPods 2.

Seriously, my question is “why”? Not why didn’t they cancel it, but why did they even design it? Did anyone ask for a sort of large mat to put their devices on? I mean, my charging pads are cheap and all though my house and office. I’ve never once thought I needed a larger version where I can place two devices. I have two separate chargers for that (plugged into the same non  excellent multi usb brick), and it works great. Additionally, I like my  watch Facing up so I can read the time when I tap the desk.

Honestly, why bother with this? The upside was obviously not worth the embarrassment of not pulling such a meh device off

Apple today canceled AirPower, the charging mat that it first announced in 2017, because of an inability to meet its high standards for hardware, reports TechCrunch.

The AirPower was designed to charge the Apple Watch, iPhone, and AirPods all at once, but after Apple announced the device in 2017, there were persistent rumors of difficulties and no product ever launched. Apple says work on the product has been canceled entirely, because the company has been unable to achieve what it wanted to with the AirPower.

"After much effort, we've concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have cancelled the project. We apologize to those customers who were looking forward to this launch. We continue to believe that the future is wireless and are committed to push the wireless experience forward," said Dan Riccio, Apple's senior vice president of Hardware Engineering in a statement provided to TechCrunch.

The AirPower was introduced in September 2017 alongside the iPhone X, and at the time, Apple said it would launch in 2018. 2018 came and went with no sign of the AirPower and no word from Apple on when it would materialize.

There were, however, continual rumors of production, engineering, and manufacturing difficulties. Rumors suggested that there were problems with heat management, inter-device communication, and interference because Apple wanted to design a charging device where you could put an iPhone, Apple Watch, or AirPods anywhere on the mat to charge.

This required layering multiple charging coils, resulting in a device that ran too hot, which turned out to be an engineering issue Apple couldn't solve.

Apple used to be an industry leader in innovative tech. They should have figured out it wasn't possible before they announced it, now they just look completely inept. They may not care though since it's obvious they are more interested in services now. In fact they can take their money to the bank, literally now.

Damn, oh well.. I wonder if they'll now allow the watch the charge with the Qi charger. If I remember correctly when the Series 3 came out people were able to charge it with a standard Qi charger and then that stopped after a software update.
