Wow, this is actually a bit shocking as I can't think the last time Apple announced a product but canceled it unreleased. Someone lost their job over this.
I doubt anyone lost their job. They clearly couldn’t get it to work the way they wanted too.

Not saying this should happen, but a class action lawsuit wouldn't surprise me. AirPods packaging promised a feature that can't be used...
My AirPods didn’t have the AirPower on it. Could of been a mistake with the first batch.

I'm pissed they waited until AFTER the AirPods wireless charging were launched. I purchased the Wireless charging case with my AirPods specifically for the future AirPower functionality. I have almost no interest in buying some 3rd party wireless charger.
Then return them.

Wow. Just wow! Why am I not shocked? lol

This will go down as the biggest fudge-up in Apple history. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that Apple has ever released products with picture/schematics/layout (on the box) of another product that never made it into production or has been entirely canceled.

Is this a first?

Just how far fetched is this....could we all wake up tomorrow to an April's fools joke?
Apple's influence reaches far and wide. There are probably vendors previously involved with AirPower that are laying people off as we speak, based on this announcement. If it were a prank, it would potentially be at the expense of some people's livelihoods, and that would be pretty awful.

LOL... what the hell is going on over there? Let's make a bunch of wireless products and leave it up to third parties to figure out how to charge them.

Yeah, just like them killing AirPorts... right at a time when we need quality secure networking, with Bluetooth/ZigBee/WiFi mesh capabilities to make all this ‘Home’ stuff actually work. Instead, nope...
