This was the one thing I was really looking forward to. I use two Macs everyday so this was going to be a nice addition to the workflow. Hopefully comes eventually

This is not Universal Control feature. It's called Sidecar and it works with the iPad.

Universal Control will essentially bring the Sidecar feature to all iPads and Macs, with added bonuses.
Well, not exactly. Sidecar turns an iPad into a second display for the Mac. UC allows control of discrete devices, each doing their own thing. These are different concepts altogether.

And for far too many MacRumors readers the world has officially come to an end ?

I expect Universal Control in 12.2 or 12.3, and until then, everyone can keep using their computers just like they had been since nothing has actually changed.

Me personally I would love to see Apple go back to an 18-mo cycle of new os releases. I can't imagine the pressure they must be under to come up with a new os every year.

That said this really isn't that big of a deal. The technical hurdles of this must be huge. Better to delay it & get it right than release it in a buggy state. People were going to complain either way so just delay it and get it finished.

Darn, Universal Control was the thing that I looked forward to the most in Monterey. I'm still using Teleport, but it's finicky and doesn't cover iOS devices.

The new Apple. No issue except incompetence. The original Apple was loath to introduce new things unless they were ready. The new Apple is so desperate for innovation and so lacking in innovation they are introducing the ideas first then trying to deliver.

When you don't have someone at the help who understands technology, this is what you get.
It also shows that the modern company couldn’t care less about consumer expectations. They push out stuff how they want, when they want and the user can either take it or leave it. User feedback is seldom if ever listened to and mistakes are never admitted. It’s like a store posting a sign saying that they’re not responsible for price inaccuracies (which they are directly in control of and legally responsible for). It used to be where if you paid a premium then you’d get a tailored experience but even that is impossible to find and usually reserved for large corporate contracts nowadays. Post-covid life is also to blame…contactless service allows the company to put in minimal effort, drag their feet and delay things indefinitely. Again, like I said in my last post, excuses used and abused because nobody would dare want to put someone in covid danger, or something.

Figured this would happen. Just made deciding to return the iPad Pro 11" easier and wait for the new one.

>>> Being able to use two computers at my desk (one Intel and one M1) and "mostly" being able to pretend that they are a single computer with multiple monitors.

Yeah, but why?

As a web developer, I need to have Docker running on an Intel machine. The images I need to use just aren't available yet on ARM and therefore I must run the code I write on a different computer.

But I also do iOS and MacOS development, and benefit from the M1 quite a bit. In most ways the M1 blows away my Intel setup both at home and work, so I prefer to maximize that.

The idea of using a single keyboard and mouse but with 2 different computer architectures, will be a significant performance and productivity boost for me. Yes you can go with old school KVM switch, but that still requires a manual flip where the new feature will be like moving the mouse between two monitors on the same computer.

Exactly! And this perfectly explains why Universal Control was not needed. If a new feature is closely similar to a an existing feature.. that new feature isn’t necessary.
Nope, Universal Control is not Sidecar. Sidecar turns iPad into an external monitor; Universal Control lets a Mac control an iPad when it's running an iPadOS app. And Sidecar is a hack that streams video from a Mac to an iPad, so doing it wirelessly, there can be lag between input from the Mac and the result on the iPad screen.

Hate to disillusion you, but it only works between Mac & iPad or Mac & Mac, not Mac & iPhone, unless they change it now.

Ask for a refund!

Oh…wait..

Does anyone else feel like this is a gimmick?
I don’t know what I would do with Universal Control. Like Sidecar, I would likely try it out for two weeks and decide using an iPad side-by-side with the Mac just isn’t useful.
