Multitouch makes perfect sense if the monitor is flat on your desk while working. People's lack of vision in this area is astounding. Of course proximity sensor, GPS and accelerometers aren't needed on a non-moving device, but to be able to interact with your screen as you would a piece of paper on a desk would be incredible for creative professionals. I'm not talking precision work, I'm talking day to day use and photoshop work.

Professionals that really need this can buy it right now. Or to use your type of formulation: Your lack of knowledge on the peripheral market is astounding.

It has been around for years for professionals

There are plenty of options out there. Even if you do have a Macintosh computer, let's say... the latest Mac Pro, for instance, why do you care so much about having an Apple display? Does Apple really make the very best 30"-displays in the world? Or is it that the non-apple-equivalents (quality-wise) are far more expensive? I'm just a bit curious about this.

I have bought several iDevices AND computers made by Apple, but I can't really see myself buying an Apple display unless it was really worth 1000$ - and no glossy screen would be worth $1000.

Had 2 Dell 3008. One had >10 dead pixels within 5 months, the replacement broke the same day it came. Now ordered a 30 ACD. My 23' is still alie and kicking.

Another hint that Apple really doesn't care about its computers any more. 27 glossy with laptop connector only? Pros finally updated about 6-9 months late (too lazy to check), MBA now not really updated since what, 2008?

Next step - ditch MacOS in favor of iOS for consumer devices, programs only installable via application store, ditch the Macintosh in favor of the Pads...?

SJ used to be the icon, I am afraid he is more and more getting the focal point of unsatisfied mac lovers...
omg, please don't start with that bs again ...
You don't like the new 27" ACD? buy another one!
Mac osx isn't going anywhere. Snow leopard was released less than a year ago, it is continuously updated and apple is clearly working at a new version (we don't need to change os every year!!!). Mac Pro was updated when there was something really worthing to be put inside (6 core). Same for iMac and MacBook Pro.
Apple is doing a great job, and market share is the prove. I don't like all the choices apple did, but you don't have to buy apple's products if you don't like them.

Even though there is a resolution and size loss, I don't think people would be so upset if Apple had a Matte version as well.
Indeed. I don't know why not to offer a matte version, as an option.

You still have freedom to choose, you just choose a different brand. Owning an Apple product is not required by law. :p

Absolutely right! This forum is becoming a bunch of whiners, lately ...

The lack of any tech specs on the LED Display page was sort of making that obvious.

Though, with the further decline in Apple Display choices the DisplayPort now seems even more like a rather silly port standard.

+1

what other company offers displays with Display Port?

Any rational observer can see this has got to be a joke. $1000 for a 27 inch screen? Are you serious?! Buyers must have a lot of money to flush down the toilet to apple.

I rock my 8-core Mac Pro with dual HP LP 2275w matte screens and a 27 inch Samsung HDTV (via blackmagic card running hdmi).

I probably got all those monitors for the price of a new 27" ACD.

Sure, I don't have a complete Apple setup, but I have a killer system that people drool over at work. And working at a higher education institution, it's good to save money.

And of course, no HDMI. Bummer. I will spend my money on a screen that can multiple-task. Of course, I could just play my blu-rays on my Mac . . . . NOT.

It seems obvious to me- Apple just doesn't feel that they offer a value-add in the monitor business.

Apple doesn't make printers for the same reason. And they only offer one or two kinds of keyboards and mice.

You can plug any monitor into any Mac (might take a dongle, but you can do it.) Some people are even still making matte screened displays!

There seems to be a very limited market for incredibly overpriced glossy monitors such as Apple's.

You are spot on there and I would agree. In fact, there have been a couple of long time Apple podcasts like Macbreak Weekly and Leo was talking about a few times this year. Mainly, Apple is now making a LOT of profit from the typical consumer. They are not the hard core computer users and mainly just do basic things like check their email, Twitter, Facebook, surf the web, do word processing or maybe some Microsoft Powerpoint, etc. Things you can basically do now with just about any netbook, low end notebook or very close even an iPad. There simply is no reason for Apple to invest in the minority that is the market for something more. It's now all about their consumer products and NOTE they are all "consumer" use items. Meaning those devices just mainly consume content, they are not meant for content creation. Gone are the days of Apple going after that market.

This is why as a 3D artist that uses very high-end 3D software I had no choice but to drop Apple long ago. They simply no longer have updates in a time frame that is acceptable and when they do it is lacking now nVidia high-end cards which are a MUST for myself and what I do specifically. For friends and family that just do what I described above, Apple is just fine, but for those of us that must have MUCH more, it is no longer a viable option.

I love having two shiny 24" LED displays on my desk...

My issue with the 27" being the only option is that for those who need/prefer to run dual displays like me, is that 2 x 27" screens is an awfully large expanse of monitors on your desk - could get a little uncomfortable leaning and twisting to see everything... and at a higher dpi, harder to see the pixels further away from your front sight.

Just my thoughts.

Id still be happy with 2 of them on my desk... but I think my 2 x 24" are safe for a while yet.

They won't give up the Macbook and Macbook pro, those are very popular and profitable for them. Nor will they give up the iMac, I think.

Is the new 27" same height as the 24" but with more width? I'll pass and wait for a 21:9 :apple: cinema display to match the width of my desk. Preferably in a brought-back acrylic design to put an end to the silver vs black issue.

why would they do this?

It may be that the sales of the 30" wasn't stellar enough for Apple. For me, I wouldn't buy a 30" because it's too big. For professional graphic artists, the size is ideal for their work.

Honestly I can see the day coming in the future when I go back to a pc - I'm a pro photog and have a fully decked out macpro with 2x30 acd screens but it is becoming clear that as apple gets wealthier the focus is going more and more to consumers rather than professionals.
