...it'll be interesting to see how many (or how few) apps materialize, indicating confidence in this device.

Here are some things this device needs, that it is unlikely to get:

1. External Monitor - Plug it into your Mac, and the iPad bypasses its own OS, and becomes a second display.
2. Bigass Touchpad - Plug it into your Mac, and it becomes a big multitouch trackpad/keyboard.
3. Clone - Plug two iPads into each other in a hinged sleeve. One acts as your keyboard, and the other your monitor. A better MB Air.
4. Garageband, iMovie - To mix and edit iLife projects while out & about.
5. VLC! - Yeah, I know, not gonna happen
6. A "Move" option, so you don't need to have all your huge movies taking up all that room both on your ipad and your Mac. Move the file on to one or the other, (with moved files only being able to be moved back again...).

Wow, #1, 2 and 4 you just described [redacted] is working on. It's basically VNC but with [redacted] so it looks super smooth over 3G. Once you see it your jaw will drop. I believe will work with all OSX applications including VLC :)

I don't know how you can feel right sending an app out into the store without properly testing it on actual hardware first. Looks like launch day bugs won't be limited to just the OS!
The hardware test would reveal...what, exactly?

The iPad simulator is essentially testing in a virtual machine, and iPad developers have no direct hardware access anyway, so what would they be programming that would actually require hardware testing? Almost all development needs to be tested against the iPhone OS (included in the iPad SDK) and the iPad-specific frameworks (also included).

I'm sure some app will have some bizarre bug, but everyone else will be fine.

Cool idea, but technically impossible, except with the limitations of the USB add-on displays (i.e. no video playback).
2. Bigass Touchpad - Plug it into your Mac, and it becomes a big multitouch trackpad/keyboard.
This can certainly be done if Apple or a third party developer decides to do it.

Gimmick and an ugly kludge. Hardly a "need" for anyone.

You can do this now if you really want to, but it's dumb. Storage space is dirt cheap. 1.5TB external drives are maybe $120; internal SATA drives are even cheaper. I can't imagine why you'd ever want to have just one copy of any digital content. All your data should have a backup.

this is a gold rush for the first iPad apps that are going to be available in the App store.

Shipping without testing seems to be working for Apple....

- 10.6
- Aperture
- ...

Im hoping to get some free iPad app upgrades for some of my existing apps at least.
That would be very nice.

taking screenshots without an iPad?

How are the devs going to take screenshots of their iPad apps without an actual device?

iPhone OS 2.0 (what a disaster when it first came out, so unstable), iMac 27" screen, MobileMe, etc...

Apple's quality control has decreased the past few years.

I'd hope for an upgrade for a $199.00 app, but not expect it. I
certainly wouldn't expect a free upgrade for a $1.99 app.

In fact, if I were a developer I would expect you to buy another
$1.99 license if you want to put the app on a second device. You
paid $1.99 for the app for your Iphone - why do you think that
would entitle you to use it on an Ipad?

Turn it 90°, set to "portrait" mode, and grab. :)

Yes, landscape screenshots can be taken that way on a 15-inch MBP. But what about portrait screenshots? I'm not sure devs want to give impression that their iPad apps are landscape only.

The screen shots in the app store aren't full size, are they? I presume they're scaled down, like the iPhone app screenshots are now.

What most people wanted but it didn't have so they will wait for 2nd gen.

Think about it, what was different about the January event public revealing versus the secretive locked in blackend windows that some elite developers have access to that even the iPad simulator could not simulate? GPS?, compass?, to actually touch it? If so, it's nothing to be secretive about but they are. Come April 3rd and it will be the longest "One more thing..."
People who are going to wait for 2nd gen will have second thoughts. :)

Now this June with the upcoming A+ iPhone, the iPad will compliment it with it's new hardware and feature integration with the iPad. Hello mom!

When you submit the screenshots for either iPhone/iPod touch or iPad apps, they must be full size.

All right! gotta start cranking out those Giant Flashlight and Monster Fart apps.
It's just a big iPod Touch right?

Cool news. The apps on this thing are going to be really great. Hope Brushes gets in for the launch.

Not to mention that the SDK is still officially a "Beta", isn't it?

Historically the last "Beta" before release is the same build as the official "release" version. At least this has been the case with the major releases (2.0, 3.0).

Hmm, I thought I would agreed with all of these, but only the first one makes any sense. :p

As a developer I can say I'm not submitting an app for iPad until I can test it on the actual device. The emulator sucks for finding memory leaks and testing performance, which on the iPhone was very important.

I had multiple issues I had to fix testing on the actual iPhone that didn't show up on the emulator.

I don't like the idea of a separate app store for the ipad. Leaves room for apps mysteriously not making it from the iPhone to the ipad.
