What a complete waste of time investing in original video content.

I submitted a suggestion in 2013 to use some of it's cash hoard and influence in the music industry to remaster existing and new music in Dolby 5.1. Sony paid Rodger Waters to remaster Dark Side of the Moon in 5.1 for it's SACD format. There were DVD-Audio and HDCD formats from a competing groups of companies. Another format war over licensing fees, which ultimately resulted in all 5.1 audio formats failing.

HDCP via HDMI and 5.1 audio capable AppleTV, TV, AVRs, etc. would allow a company like Apple to add a premium audio subscription service with 5.1 audio content. Sure, most modern AVR's have DSPs and can simulate 5.1 audio from a 2 channel source, but that does not give the original artist any creative control.

Tim Cook, use some of those billions to pay labels and artists to remaster existing content or create new audio content in 5.1. If you get it out there first, you will have a monopoly for years to come. The labels, artists, and audiophiles will all love it.

It's very clear what Apple is attempting to pull off in the future - create an Apple HBO type entertainment service- but one that can only be viewed on Apple devices. What an outlandish plan.

Maybe Apple should write all the ios apps in house as well. Just like with iphone 1.

But will Apple make sure to release them with dubbed versions for international viewers at the same time tho or are they going to focus on their american customers as usual?

I think he should make donuts. Because I like donuts.

Might be a good show or not but my concern is how many of these streaming sites are going to pop up?

I don't want to have multiple memberships just to watch shows I happen to like. Besides becoming expensive, it can be annoying to follow and schedule the shows.

This seems like it will go the way of cable eventually with a few mega sites with channels (netflix, amazon, apple, etc.) that will provide original content.

Once live events (like sports, etc) are streaming online without needing a cable subscription regularly, I could see leaving cable for good.

I think apple’s foray into video will make me puke.

I imagine it all as super safe super pc very beautifully shot saccharine tv.
On the other hand, I don't think TV needs to be full of violence or nudity in order to be successful at being a good show.

Oh, yeah! She played the part of "Woman in Elevator" in Being John Malkovich back in 1999. Haven't seen any of her other work.

I don't know of anybody who's asking for this.

Octavia Spencer isn't a great actress. Unfunny and just loud.
Three-time Oscar Nominee; and Oscar winner. Three-time Golden Globe nominee; and Golden Globe winner. Two-time BAFTA Nominee; and BAFTA winner. But I guess you hang out on MacRumors, so there's that. For the record, she's a brilliant actress with emotional range and natural humor and timing, and if you knew anything about film and acting you could see why her performance in The Help is revered.

In terms of who's asking for this. I don't even know what that statement is meant to mean, considering we didn't see the show at this point, so we cannot possibly judge how good or not good it might be.

Making the most revenue and profit does not necessarily mean it is a good thing for the consumer.

I think Apple had a much better quality product, especially software, back when they (relatively) did not make any money.
Yep. It was specifically because of that quality that they earned their reputation back, and became the Apple we know today. The reduction in quality that we’ve been seeing will slowly tarnish that same reputation, and by the time you see it in the numbers, it’ll be too late to earn it back. Lots of companies go down this way. They can’t depend on another Steve Jobs to jump in and salvage them this time, though.

Irrespective of how well that may be done I have to wonder… would I prefer Apple spent millions on something I might watch the one time else millions on coming up with a Mac Pro/Mac mini/standalone display/Airport basestation that I will probably use for a number of hours each and every day for 3+ years.

Hmm, now there's a tough one!

It is not important what customers think of this series - as Eddy seems to like it
(while Joni is dreaming about a new book and Phil is playing with his TouchBar...)

I'm not just talking about MR posters. I don't know a single Apple device user (or non-user, for that matter) who has voiced any sort of desire for Apple to come out with a standalone video streaming service a la Netflix, HBO NOW, etc. Clearly they're dumping enough money into this with the idea that there's a market for it-- I just don't know who that market is, based on my personal experience.

[doublepost=1525290949][/doublepost]Lots of bad actors have received awards, and lots of great actors have never received one. Regardless, I don't pay much mind to who has won which awards when I form my own opinion of who is and isn't -- to me -- a good actor.

Which can be completely respected....One the other hand, others may / can feel the complete opposite. (Plus her peers in the SAG-Aftra feel differently) But again, it's all subjective. Just pointing out, from an industry standpoint, she's worked consistently & her profile has risen (and she's won awards from different groups....not just one particular organization) so there's a large % of people who do feel she is a good actress.

This genre or project may not be one that you're interested in, but I'm sure there will be others who are. I'm guessing they will be diversifying their content to appeal to various audiences. The Octavia Spencer & Reese Witherspoon projects will be clearing be marketed to those audience interested in those genres.

I'm sure there will be additional projects for different genres...I'm thinking they'll want as much of the "original hit series" piece of the pie as possible.

Is this Eddy Cue's status update in 1-1 with Tim? Every time Tim asks for status, Eddy tells him about a new series Apple has ordered! But not paid :D

Yeah, Nickelback has won a ton of awards too. I'd still call them a **** band. Either way, I'm sorry that I appear to have upset you.

I'm sure there will be all sorts of genres for a variety of tastes and preferences. I just don't really believe that there's some mass, untapped market out there of people that want to stream video content but wouldn't/aren't already doing so via Netflix, Hulu, HBO, or one of the several other services available. Apple would have to offer content that was ridiculously good at an attractive price to get people to ditch one of those other services or add Apple's in addition to those other services.

When I think of Apple products (services and content included), I think of the wide range of people I know. Family, friends, co-workers, etc. They're all across the spectrum from "hates Apple" to "loves Apple and gets all the products." At no point on that spectrum do I imagine some sort of Apple version of HBO being all that popular with the people I know.

EDIT: Maybe, MAYBE I could see this being popular if they did something like Amazon does with Prime and bundle it in with Apple Music as like, a $5 addition.
