I dont think YOU understand the reviews. The signal degradation only occurs when holding the phone in that one TEENY TINY LITTLE spot that most motor morons cant figure out how not to touch it.

That's not actually true.

Go read Anandtech's review as well as Walt Mossberg's

The "motor morons" that you mention include Steve Jobs and the people Apple uses in its advertising - they all hold the phone in that "TEENY LITTLE SPOT".

When I put my iPhone in my left hand and have the left side jammed into my palm, the phone goes from 5 bars to 1 every time. Kind of alarming. But as a lefty, when I make actual calls, I have no problems because I hold the phone with my fingers not my palm.

I also noticed as a lefty that when I hold the phone with my right hand and navigate apps, my fingers don't really come close to the bottom left corner and I have no problems.

In fact, I am getting better reception than the 1st and 2nd gen phones I had. I don't think I've had a dropped call either. Maybe one.

So realistically, why is it such a big deal to just move your hand? Don't hold the phone in your palm, move it out just a bit.

The comments on the other sites are just so dramatic, logical thinking and a slight change could go a long way towards keeping you sane.

Good luck.

You might want to reread that article. I'm not the one generalizing things here:

I'm saying, "I have a problem with my phone."

Others are saying, "I'm also having the same problem."

You're saying, "I don't have that problem, so it isn't a problem at all."

Ya he's not quite getting it.

I like how you call people morons for using a phone, but ignore the total problem of the morons who designed the flaw.

Yeah....I smell Apple bull-**** once again. If you fools are going to stand there and be lied to like this then by all means do it.....I for one am sick of the crap that Apple spews out. First chance I get I am going to toss my iPhone 3GS out the window and go buy an android phone!

Use google maps, it will give you turn by turn directions to the nearest apple store.

Don't hold your phone like him.

When its right where normal people hold a phone, no its not. Putting it there is a design defect - people design equipment for people to use, not for people to adapt to. There is no reasonable way to hold the phone in your left hand that doesn't touch that area. i.e. center of grip at center of phone mass held firmly to prevent dropping.

You don't think those of us complaining like our iPhone 4's? Why do you think we are so mad? We like Apple, we love the phone, we just want the damn thing to work at least as well as our 3G/3GS's did as a phone. Most of us will keep them and live with the dropped calls and poor reception because we love everything else about the phone.

We were also the ones waiting in lines and waking up at 4am to pre-order like you. We feel like we've been treated like **** by Jobs and Apple, with each statement more laughable then the previous. We're sick of those without the issues acting like it's a big conspiracy or a plot to bring down Apple, it's a real f'n problem. And you don't have the issues, then why the hell come into threads clearly labeled for the issue?!
The problem is that there are multiple solutions out there to solve the problem, even without returning it. The ones complaining aren't even attempting to just use the solutions provided. There comes a point where you have the responsibility as an owner of the device to follow troubleshooting steps. If you choose not to, and STILL won't return it, then it can't be helped. And just about EVERY topic is about this issue.

If this is true, then this phone has worse coverage than the 3Gs. 3Gs I can use at work, iPhone 4 times out on 3G... Says 5 bars but obviously has like 0 bars.

Hah.

Ever heard of iDrive in BMW?

People adapt.

Oh and re: the holding in left hand comment.. i'm a lefty....................

Do you have a source indicating there are over 850k people experiencing a problem? He is stating that phone is working well and in many cases better for most people. There has been no evidence to indicate this is not the case.

If you have some evidence showing that 850k people have iPhone 4s that are either unable to make calls or dropp an abnormal number of calls, I would love to see it.

We will be waiting..

It's hard to say since not all iphone4 users are reading Macrumors to follow all the threads over this reception issue.

At least put it up on EBAY or CRAIG's LIST.

And NOT ONE person here appreciates being called a fool, FOOL!

More insults from Apple on their customers' intelligence. Admit it Steve, you screwed up! At this point, Apple Inc. is just another corporation pushing subprime product.

I was all on board for this and thought this was the issue all along.

But last night I was in a low service area. My GF still has a 3GS and I was unable to get pages to load on my 4 which had 1 bar of 3g and would keep switching back to edge or dropping data, and even went to 'no service' a couple times. Her 3GS stayed right at 2-3 bars 3G and worked fine.

Sucked to have to put down my shiny new iPhone 4 and use a 3GS (running iOS 4) to do anything. grrrr.

Nope.

EDIT: looked it up - now I can't see how it relates - a system that does more and better work without sacrificing anything relates to a design flaw that prevents holding a phone normally and continuing to have it function as well as the previous version of that phone how?

Billions of iPhones sold? Get your facts right!

Thousands of complaints on this and other threads (and other sites) and yet only about a handful (i.e. five) have actually returned their iPhones.

With a return rate of 0.0000001%, why would they bother with a more elaborate fix? Apple is laughing at you all the way to the bank.

Your maths skills are in severe need for an upgrade.

If only five person returned it, the 0.0000001% makes the overall sales figure to be 5 billion, if I counted the zeros well.

Tried a case, helps a little but i still get dropped calls and data halts. Tried holding it "differently" but I still see a loss of reception and dropped calls. Honestly, Apple may be the only community where the users are blamed for product inefficiencies, not the manufacturer, it's truly ridiculous.

This might be the case for many users who are have been convinced there are no issues, simply because they just live in a strong-signal area.
