Att has other phones and you could go back to your 3GS. Just return it it's simple
They want a 10% restock fee, Apple's letter not withstanding.

Why does the press release NOT explain that the algorithm changes "everything" in terms of how the phone functions - searching for a different tower, etc.
Excellent advice.Return it
What's the point in complaining?
Considering that I'm on 5 person plan with ATT, my whole business ecosystem revolves around Mac, and there are restocking and plan cancellation fees to deal with, just returning the phone isn't as easy as it seems.
Unfortunately, I'm just going to have to use a case, which is akin to putting plastic on your couch, IMO. My 3G survived 2 years without a case, and I don't want to add bulk to the phone (or cover up the design.)
Apple should have put the connection between the GSM and Wifi antenna (the black strip) on the bottom of the phone close to the microphone area. That would have reduced the amount of contact during phone calls, I would imagine. Beautiful form, poor function.

I do not own and Iphone 4 (yet, but soon depending on what happens with this issue) but after reading the reports of the reception problem I can understand what the problem is. It is a simple miss match of antenna. I am to understand that the 2 aerials used by the phone, WiFi and cellular, are incorporated in the metal around the edge of the phone and are separated by the thin black strips, one on the top and the important one on the left bottom corner. When your hand comes into contact with the bottom left corner your hand is effectively joining the 2 aerials together, because it conducts, and therefore causing a miss match with the antenna, just like the VSWR being out of range on the old CB radio equipment.
Someone with an iPhone 4 can help me out here by testing this theory by putting a pair of rubber gloves on and putting their hands on the bottom corner and see if the drop in signal is as dramatic as it is without the gloves. You will, as Steve Jobs says, lose some signal by covering the antenna in any way but see if it isn't as bad as with your bare hand. I am interested in your findings.
If I am right the only real way to cure this problem would be to put a non conducting coating around the edge of the phone, or bumper, or change the design to put the antenna/casing joints (thin black strips) on the bottom and top of the phone, where nobody touches when using the phone.
Let me know what you think and, Steve Jobs, if you're reading this and think I have a good point and maybe I'm right I am open for a job if you have one for me, I'm fed up of being self employed and not appreciated.![]()

Excellent advice.
Now do you have any advice for returning apps that might have been purchased for the new iPhone 4?
What about people who have given or sold their old phones to family and friends?
How do you return third party accessories, especially things like screen protectors, that aren't eligible for return?
Some people bought their phones because their contract renewal eligibility was moved up specifically for the iPhone 4?
Any advice on getting back restocking fees on the iPhone 4 and some of the accessories purchased.
The longer and louder the complaints are will allow others considering purchasing an iPhone 4 to rethink their decision till this has been resolved.
This way they can avoiding some of the above mentioned problems that aren't resolved by simply "returning it".
There blatantly lieing about this. If it was a software issue then why would it show up as you hold the phone in a certain place? That's not programig that's hardware. So if they fix this issue with programing it's not going to stop the signal strength from dropping when you touch that area. There conning up with a bad excuse for bad design. It's not software and if anyone excepts this as an excuse then there dumb. Logic tells that if your holding the phone in a certain way and it drops signal it's because your hand placement is obviously preventing proper signals from reaching the phone. And more proof that it's hardware is that when I use a case on my phone and don't touch the Metal case the signal never drips no matter how you hold it. Apple is full of it and can't admit there mistake. So with some clever programig they'll allow tue signal to look stronger then it is so people shut up. Mark my words this isn't going away
You agreed to it when you bought the
Phone as did all of us. Loose the 10% and return it. It's alot better than having a useless phone that causes people mental anguish.
It was only a 3G, and I did a trade in with Radio Shack for the new phone. I am completely synced up with the Mac ecosystem with my work, so even an iPhone 4 with a stupid case is better than any other option.
That does not mean that I won't complain that the iPhone 4 antenna design is poor. It is, and it should have been identified before shipping the product.
Don't get me wrong, I love everything else about the phone, and it is beautiful, but a relocation of the gap between the two antennas should have be considered. Poor planning.

If Apple says people aren't happy they can return it and people aren't happy with it - why should they pay .01 let alone 10 percent?
Sorry - spam the board as much as you want with "return it" (something I've alerted the moderators to) - but no one but Apple should be paying for their mistake.
People returning their phones should get 100 percent of what they paid. Why should Apple (ATT is kinda screwed here) get a 10% TIP?
Then, don't return the phone.
The phone is fine as it is. You don't even need a case.
By the way guys, did it ever occurred to you that all this publicity good or bad it doesn't matter will eventually skyrocket i4 sales?
Apple has managed something that other companies would die for:
Everyone is talking iphone 4. Free world domination publicity...
If it was a hardware issue, they wouldn't release a press release stating its down to software. Yes, its good for the short term (keep buyers pleased etc) but in the long run, it would haunt them. Imagine in 'a few weeks' when everyone is waiting for that update and its actually down to hardware. It would ruin their image very badly.
I think I missed something. Where did they say it's a hardware issue?Apple aren't saying it's a software issue.
I'm convinced most people here can't read.

Because you signed a contract that says there is a 10% restocking fee.
