5 inch iPhone. (how hard is it to order a larger screen? The reason why Android uses larger screens is because its easier to manufacture.)

Somehow, I think that the reasons why pretty much everybody makes phones with larger screens is because hundreds of millions of consumers prefer them.

The reason Apple uses smaller screens is because they can still sell boatloads of them, each of which with better margins compared to using a larger screen. This yields them a greater amount of total profits. That is the reason they reissued the i5 with a cheaper case - to boost/maintain margins.

Apple is very good at maximizing total profits. My guess is that they have evaluated each and every thing which you suggest, and have decided that each of them would lower total profits.

"Great" work iTunes 11.1 Team, you have littered our podcast List View with page after page of podcasts we cannot delete.

That means they know they won't sell much more iPhones if they go big. Because if they would sell twice as many with a 5" model, that'd surely put some big bump on their profits regardless of lower margins. Hence, there aren't that many people looking for a 5" iPhone who aren't already buying iPhones.

Are profit margins that much higher on 4" phones? And if phones greater than 4" are so popular wouldn't the increased sales more than outweigh the lower profit margins (assuming margins are lower)?

This is another example of Apple's growing corporate laziness and complacency.

By all means, employees deserve a short break. Have a great Thanksgiving. But then, get back to work! America did not become a great nation by taking long extended vacations.
I generally don't agree with statements like this. But for once I concur.
They should be working on fixing their problems with the iphone supply
(why are online orders placed the day after the iphone came out taking a backseat to walk-ins?)

Some companies think so. Seemingly, Apple does not.

There's no better company in the world to work for than Apple. This is why people dream of a career opportunity with the most innovative company ever in tech.

The iPod team must be on a permanent holiday.

I'm not sure it really has a dedicated team at this point. It might just be a secondary duty of other teams.

It's not bad to have a little buffer around the holidays. As far as complacency is concerned, it's a place known for long hours. If you look at how many hours their employees put in annually, I really doubt there would be any insinuation that they don't put in the time.

Delayed compensation for working long hours is not uncommon for such efforts by salaried engineers and programmers. Or at least, the promise of such. Ha.

Some companies do it better. Some do it worse.

It depends on how many extra hours and weekends the employees had to put in. If it was every weekend for six months, then three days off at the end, during a slow holiday week when nobody does much anyway, is rather minimal payback with little cost to the company. Nice, but minimal.

As for you guys in Europe with 30 days vacation, Americans usually only get that after working at a place for many years. Two weeks for the first few years, is more common for someone starting out here.

Your implying apple is the most innovative tech firm; which is untrue.

I dont like it.

That's the worse thing about working in retail. The corporate employees get a whole week off while the front line gets no holiday vacation time and has to stand on their feet hours on end at the retail stores bringing in the business. At the end of the day it takes "sales" to make revenue, not corporate employees. I would like to see retail employees get treated better.

Cry me a river. These retail employees get the time off just not at the same time as everyone else. Do you think Apple stores should be closed the week of Thanksgiving? That certainly wouldn't be good for business and I'm sure would make a lot of customers unhappy. If it wasn't for the corporate employees these retail employees would have nothing to sell and therefore no employment.

Tim is a class act. And you get the sense these aren't just words or something the PR department wrote up for him. The CEO at the company I work for would never write something like this. And we'd never get a week of paid vacation either.

The CEO at the company I got laid off from would say almost the exact same thing BUT this line...

In recognition of your incredible efforts and achievements, I’m happy to announce that we’re extending....

Would read like this...

In recognition of your incredible efforts and achievements, I’m happy to announce that we’re extending layoffs and moving more call center jobs to the Philippines so we can keep paying our stockholders a 6% dividend.

It was always grand compliments followed by completely different actions. I'm happier with the stress of unemployment than working for them.

It's refreshing to see a CEO follow up his appreciation of employees with actions that support what he says.

Nicely done Apple, giving employees a nice holiday week! :)

Not ALL of the employees.

Oh please, you're entire post is ridiculous. Corporate office employees are the sales support. When they are off enjoying their holiday the retail stores have limited support. And for the record without sales the corporate lazies wouldn't have a paycheck. Obviously you've never worked in a retail sales environment. Don't even attempt to convince me you have, I can tell you haven't.

Here we go again. There's going to be people saying that retail employees should have the busiest retail week of the year off work. There's going to be Europeans making a fuss about how much better they are for only having to work 11 months of the year. There's going to be complainers saying Apple doesn't deserve any breaks at all.

Look. If you're in retail, that's your own fault. Get an education and get a job that not everyone can do, and then you can have a better holiday season. Europeans: The US's GDP per capita is almost 160% that of the EU's, so maybe all those vacation days are the problem. And complainers, Apple management is going to use these extra vacation days that would surely be wasted anyway by distracted workers to spur on greater effort and longer hours between now and then, so Apple is still going to be hard at work, and probably accomplish even more than if they didn't take a little extra vacation time.

We have this topic every year and everyone makes the same tired arguments about why this is somehow a bad thing. Apple just had a record sale of iPhones, probably going to have a record sale of iPads next month, giving workers a break to relax and rest the month after that isn't a bad idea. A shorter, hectic holiday would only cause Apple employees stress and exhaustion that would hurt morale and efficiency for the rest of the year. Tim Cook knows what he's doing.

Yay! Maybe my Son and family will drive up for Thanksgiving again this year! And no I don't get my iPhone 5S Cheaper or faster.:p
