Really nice of Cook. Also well deserved to everyone. The wait must suck for retail/AHAs though.

But Apple is doomed, they should be working everyday until the sun stops spinning trying to rectify the mess that they are in.. Gosh, the thought of them having a break when they should be figurin out how to deliver my iPhone is unbearable.... Right?

Right...

Not ALL of the employees.

Oh please, you're entire post is ridiculous. Corporate office employees are the sales support. When they are off enjoying their holiday the retail stores have limited support. And for the record without sales the corporate lazies wouldn't have a paycheck. Obviously you've never worked in a retail sales environment. Don't even attempt to convince me you have, I can tell you haven't.

and it's pretty damn clear you've never worked in as a "corporate lazy" if you actually think that people working in corporate, R&D, legal, accounting, and the entire whizzbang are "corporate lazies".
many people in the corporate area that you call "lazies" got to the corporate area by years, thousands (hundreds of sometimes) in education, who work long hard hours to HAVE products, the necessary channels for the products, the business to run the products and the whole shebang.

Retail is important. But you could run Apple without the "genius" bars and the retail chain.

you couldn't run apple without the corporate chain.

Somehow, I think that the reasons why pretty much everybody makes phones with larger screens is because hundreds of millions of consumers prefer them.

The reason Apple uses smaller screens is because they can still sell boatloads of them, each of which with better margins compared to using a larger screen. This yields them a greater amount of total profits. That is the reason they reissued the i5 with a cheaper case - to boost/maintain margins.

Apple is very good at maximizing total profits. My guess is that they have evaluated each and every thing which you suggest, and have decided that each of them would lower total profits.

Could it just be that some people are fine with the current size and don't want jumbo screens?

Could it just be that Apple decided what they want to market how and the consumer tells them when they are right by either buying or not?

Could it just be that your opinion is unfounded, as you don't know one margin of any Apple product or their internal calculations, R&D expenses etc.?

Could it just be that you are guessing totally wrong?

If I were lucky enough to work at Apple, I would have a difficult time pulling myself away from my work. I wonder how many people actually take the vacation time? I don't consider myself a workaholic, but I love my job and haven't taken any vacation (outside of national holidays) in the past year since graduating. That being said, I would absolutely love to be a designer at Apple. Perhaps someday. They could pay me in iPhone 6's for all I care. Who needs food and shelter when you have a pre-release iPhone 6?

Could the reason for selling the same screen 2 years in a row be that Apple orders enough screens for 2 model years thereby reducing overall cost?

I think there are a ton of things coming out between now and Thanksgiving. Certainly new iPads and the Haswell MacPro Laptops will come out. Also the Mac Pro and with it a 4K Monitor. By the end of November Apple folks will have really earned the time off.

Big deal, Apple makes billions each quarter. This is pocket change. What he should to is raise the salaries, especially the salaries up in China where all of their products are made.

This just seems like, ''oh he's a good guy, let's buy even more from his company.'' ^^

^--- Things that are never happening.
I dont know, there are a lot of l33t g33ks that would love a retina 17-er.
I know I'd buy one over a ne Mac Pro in a heartbeat if it took advantage of a wider chassis to include a hybrid drive set up, premium discrete graphics and maybe an extra TB or USB3 port or two.

I'm betting they come out with a "champagne" Mac Pro first though.

No. No one places a two year bet on an order as large as this. Also two years of iPhone sales is way past the size where you get serious economies of scales. Apple buys in huge bulk for these screens every week. They already get the best prices just based on a one month order. There is no need to bundle two years worth of orders.

Apple is using smaller size because it fits in pocket and fits in hands. Android is doing large models so they can put in larger batteries and because they can't manufacture as small as Apple.

Meanwhile in Foxconn City...

Allow me to finish, if you will:

...thousands of people have jobs and money to feed their families and make a living while thousands more line up outside of the gates every time they announce more hiring, as unemployment and poverty run rampant in those rural areas.

It is already hard for the MacPro to run a retina screen at 15". It would be even harder at 17". I just don't see it happening. The trend is toward small and light. Smaller and lighter is how Apple differentiates itself from the other hardware companies which can't match them in this regard. The 17" goes in the other direction.
I guess never is too hard a statement. I agree the 17" would sell. But it would be a very niche product. 12 and 13 inch laptops vastly outsell 15 laptops. 17" would be a further drop from 15".

This is another example of Apple's growing corporate laziness and complacency.

By all means, employees deserve a short break. Have a great Thanksgiving. But then, get back to work! America did not become a great nation by taking long extended vacations.

Are you for real? You can't be. You just can't be.

The CEO at the company I got laid off from would say almost the exact same thing BUT this line...

In recognition of your incredible efforts and achievements, I’m happy to announce that we’re extending....

Would read like this...

In recognition of your incredible efforts and achievements, I’m happy to announce that we’re extending layoffs and moving more call center jobs to the Philippines so we can keep paying our stockholders a 6% dividend.

It was always grand compliments followed by completely different actions. I'm happier with the stress of unemployment than working for them.

It's refreshing to see a CEO follow up his appreciation of employees with actions that support what he says.

Sorry to hear :(, but hey believe me I knwo from personal experience - unemployeed & happy is much better than employed and miserable, and it looks like you are in that situation so good for you!

Stocks are down, product quality is suffering.. Jobs would have NEVER allowed this kind of complacency! Unimaginable!! Get back to work!!

... and yes. I'm joking.;)

I dont consider myself a work-a-holic either. In fact, I really dont' want to spend hours of untold hours sitting in the office. it's tiring brainnumbing, eyestraining work.

But i"m like you. in the last two years, I've taken a total of 2 weeks combined vacation / lieu and sicktime. My boss actually pesters me almost daily now that I should take time off. I can't easily afford a trip or to do anyhting, So i can't justify taking time off to sit at home and do nothing, when I could be here anyways and being productive.
