my prediction on this is there will be a brand new product or a product with a significant design change. From past "one more thing" keynotes i've noticed this. I predict dual core Powerbooks. A New PowerMac case design with speed bumps, and maybe a video iPod but I doubt it. :D

Why would it only be speed bumps to existing products when the advert has a theatre curtain, and the event is taking place at a theatre? And the BBC is involved? This clearly isnt focused on speed bumps to the Mac lines. Why do people keep saying its going to be that? Its quite clear that the event is centred around video. The real issue here is whether thats a video iPod, an iMovie store, an Airport Express AV, a settop box, or all of these things...

Because it's not quite clear at all - this is all just speculation. I've been hanging around Mac rumour sites for almost 5 years (sad, I know) and have seen this rampant speculation far too many times before. What is announced may be one or all of the things you suggest, but if you think everything is so clear, prepare for disappointment...

How can I be prepared for disappointment, when I say that it will be centred around video? Sure, it may NOT be one of the specific things I suggested, but come on it doesnt take a genius to work out it is video related. Nothing at all points to a speed bump. Everything points to a video related announcement. I agree with you that rampant speculation is a big thing in this forum, and thats why im not saying it is going to be a video iPod, or something else... but im fairly certain it will relate to video... which is why I think everybody is excited, as it will be a new realm for Apple...

And the BBC is involved?

I just spotted this in today's issue of Computing:

The BBC plans to share with rival broadcasters internet technology that allows viewers access to past television shows, if trials prove successful.

The whole story is also on the Computing website at http://www.computing.co.uk/computin...chnology-rivals

Also, BBC have run a trial on this technology, transferring it to a mobile device. Have a look at:

I dare someone to take a video pod on the NY subway.

Come on, stop feeding the stereotypes.

Despite huge job losses caused by terrorism and the evaporation of “new media” and dot com companies, NYC subways are booming. According to the NY Daily News, in April, New York City subways carried an average of 4.68 million passengers a day—the highest ridership since 1953.

Simultaneously, subway crime has fallen to its lowest level since 1969, with fewer than ten major crimes a day within the entire system.

NYC- safest big city in the world!

To be fair, I feel safer in Central NY than I do in most major UK cities.

I can think of worse places to use a video iPod.

Good point though. iPods are crime targets already. If you're watching video on one, using different headphones won't throw crooks off the scent. :(

Riddle?

It's not a riddle - Steve Jobs uses this phrase a lot to introduce new products. No riddle involved I'm afraid.

It is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma, surrounded by terrifically designed packaging, resulting in a delightful out-of-box experience.

How is this for an option...

1) New set top box that will become your digital library.

This will have everything from your DVD's that you can rip to the device, to your music, to your Home Movies that you import, to your digital photos. Everything.

So if you want to watch video of your kids fisrt birthday, or the skateboard video that you made in iMovie last week, or last years video of the Grand Canyon vacation... it's in the library ready for you to view at the click of a button. Instead of keeping stacks of DVD's, old VHS tapes, and photo albums, everyting will be ready for viewing in your digital library. This might also include TV shows that you have recorded from a Tivo type device. Plus, you can also buy "videos" from the iTMS. Buying movies would come later. But you can rip now and encode to a small format.

This box would also have a wireless option so that you view/access you entire library from your wireless mac/network.

3) A video iPod that can sync w/ your mac or the new top box that would play the videos/music/photos in your library. The new ipod might work as a remote also.

Seriously, If I could have all my home movies, DVD's, photo's and music all in one place just a menu or two away. That would change how I approach my livingroom and change how I live my digital lifestyle.

Yea, I think it's going to be a new Mac for the living room with Intel Viiv technology.
Mac OS X media center edition and iTunes Movie store, but no video iPod.

Prediction: I Think It'll be a video firmware for your iPod but not a new video iPod

I still think it will be a video firmware for our current colored screen iPods (Nano, U2, Photo versions). Wouldn't we like that, no more purchasing another iPod. since, the title says One More Thing, it's gonn'a be a follow-up to the iPod Nano, it also has the curtains means it's about performance arts, like broadway or a play- meaning it's something that moves that entertains. It's not good to launch another new iPod when people had just bought Nano's. People will feel cheated.

For more details on this, read (below the Scientology article):
Title: Prediction: Apple's October 12, One More Thing...

Enjoy reading the articles.

God bless,
Alvin

As a 2nd gen. iPod owner, I highly doubt that if video comes, it will be a firmware upgrade. They don't update older iPods for the most part. The only update I've seen for mine of "new" features after 3rd gen. came out was a customizable menu and was only recently. I still can't even have Notes on my iPod.

Look at this page: http://www.bbc.co.uk/imp/tour/tour3.shtml - the search icon is the same as the Spotlight one... And if you go back a couple pages, the desktop they show has an iTunes logo on it...

Are Apple about to announce their partnership with the BBC to allow people to legally download video content?

EDIT- And they also use small arrows like th one in iTunes that link you to the Music store...

However, I found this on the Terms and Conditions-

"Compatibility
The iMP requires the following minimum specification to operate:

The iMP is not available for use on Apple Macintosh computers"

Hhmmm... Why?... And why is it called "iMP'? Darn rumor sites :)

From their help page :
14. When will I get iMP on Mac & Linux?
Currently, our supplier is working towards supporting a Mac and Linux version.

Who do you think their supplier is and when do you think it'll be ready? Considering they plan to go live with the service by the end of the month and delivering the 'mobile device' in 1-2 weeks???

EDIT: Just read some more and the DRM is stated to be Windows based and the mobile device is a smart phone.

My birthday is TOMOROW - Apple just give us a radically new Powerbook! I'll be happy!

Cool, when is TOMOROW exactly? Can't say I've heard of it before. Does it have something to do with cats? :p

Tokyo, anyone?

No, I think that when the last report came out, NYC was still ranked the safest big city in the world, don't remember where Tokyo ranked. Unless there has been a more recent investigation and evaluation since...

I've been to NYC many times, since my brother used to live there and found it very safe indeed. I've been there pre- and post-9/11 as well, and would say it is safer and more friendly if anything now - I guess if a person had to find one good thing to come out of that horrible day, perhaps it would be that a lot of people seem to care more about each other there now and have a bit of a better perspective on life.
