Not too many people upgrade every year. Plus, anyone who already has a series 4 and wants to upgrade would only upgrade to the series 5 with no doubt, so really there's no need for that comparison.

With no doubt? You have no statistics or source to back up this statement.

Apple's online store is back up and Apple has begun accepting pre-orders for the new 10.2-inch 7th-generation iPad and the Apple Watch Series 5.

The new 10.2-inch iPad is similar to the 9.7-inch iPad, but with a bigger display and a faster A10 Fusion chip. It comes in silver, space gray, and gold, with pricing that starts at $329.

Apple Watch Series 5 models feature an always-on display, a new Compass app and compass features for navigation improvements, and international emergency calling.

Apple Watch Series 5 models are available in aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, and ceramic, with pricing starting at $399 for the aluminum GPS models and $499 for the aluminum LTE models. Stainless steel models are priced starting at $699, titanium models are priced starting at $799, and ceramic models are priced starting at $899. You can choose to pair an Apple Watch body with whichever band you like thanks to Apple's new "Apple Watch Studio."

Pre-orders are starting today, with the new devices set to ship out to customers on their official launch date, Friday, September 20.

Apple is continuing to sell the Apple Watch Series 3 priced starting at $199. The Apple Watch Series 4 has been discontinued.

iPhone models won't be available for pre-order today, with Apple accepting preorders for the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max on September 13 at 5:00 a.m. Pacific Time or 8:00 a.m. Eastern Time.

On the official site they only appear to reference a sapphire lens for the back of the case. Have they abandoned it for the front? Cuz... If they did, for me that kinda removes the practical justification (as much as it can be) of ordering anything more than the base model.

Anyone confirm that the sapphire front lens is still offered?

Any reason why we can't compare the Series 4 AW with the Series 5 Apple? Could it be that there is not much of a difference?
Well, you cannot buy the Series 4 anymore.

Series 2 got GPS + 50-m water resistance (plus faster processor)
Series 3 got LTE + barometer (plus faster processor)
Series 4 got larger display + ECG (plus faster processor)
Series 5 got always-on display + compass (but not faster processor)

There were other smaller changes enabled by software and improved sensors.

I doubt it. As soon as apple released the first LTE model (series 3), they stopped selling non-cellular models in anything other than aluminum.

Shoot. So I'd be paying $100 for something I don't want, then $10/month if I activate it. :-(

None of the SS models come with the link bracelet anymore, though. Since last year, the stainless steel models only come with either a sport loop or a milanese loop. Apple still sells the link bracelet by itself in both silver and space gray, but it must be the same old band you already have since it's still advertised in 38 or 42 mm sizes, meaning they didn't make new 40 or 44 mm versions of the bracelet link for the series 4 and later models.

You'd better keep your link bracelet because you can still use it with the series 4 and 5 (maybe just remove a couple more links to shorten it)
You can build the watch you want now so can add SS link bracelet. £50 saving off buying it separately.

The Titanium version is 30% HEAVIER than the aluminum. Maybe that's because the titanium has cellular also but I was hoping it'd be lighter. Why bother with titanium then when it costs twice as much?

How does the AW steel the show? it's the worst update of everything that was announced. A new low powered display and a compass. Nothing about it being more powerful than the AW 4 and Apple would only giving me $110 for my $750 watch from last year.
The always-on display is a big deal to some people. So is the return of the Edition. This update is aimed at Series 1/2/3 owners who didn’t take the plunge for the Series 4.

Yeah, but the person I replied to already has that stainless steel link bracelet band from his old series 0 SS Apple Watch. And the link bracelet currently sold by Apple is the exact same one he already has since apple didn't make a new version of the link bracelet for the series 4 and later models, so it would make no sense for him to buy another link bracelet. He'd be better off buying his new Apple Watch with a sport loop and just use his existing link bracelet.

What does the weight compare with SS?

Well, that's gonna be a no for me Tim. I'm tired of scratching the glass on the aluminum one doing absolutely nothing and thought I would upgrade to stainless. No chance I'm spending $400 more than aluminum for that.

I don't pay for LTE service, but the stainless watch is beautiful and well worth what it costs in my opinion.

That's also true of the stainless steel model, which I have and love. Keep in mind that some people prefer heavy watches to light ones (within reason, of course) and also that the non-aluminum models have crystal screens instead of glass screens.

Also, as far as pricing is concerned, you could say the same thing about a Hermes band vs. a regular leather band or about an Apple band vs. a third-party band.

It should be about the same. Both are heavier than aluminum.

Too bad they didn't get rid of the red ring. Such an awfully pointless design element. I wanted the ceramic, too, but that ruins the design for me.
I just wish the ring was orange on the Hermes models.

There is a new processor, the tech specs “64-bit dual-core S5 processorUp to 2x faster than S3 processor”. The series 4 tech specs had “S4 with 64-bit dual-core processor Up to 2x faster processor”.

So S5 isn’t faster than S4 processor (both are 2x S3), so maybe only a change for the compass sensor and/or the new display?
Probably just lower power usage, to facilitate the AOD. But 'more efficient!' is a harder sell than "2x faster", so there you go.

For whatever reason the high-end watches have horrible resale value. :(

It seems to me that the main reason for giving us a 10.2" screen on the "consumer/edu" grade iPad (entry level iPad) was so Apple can use the keyboard from the 11" Pro on this less expensive version. In other words it's a clever strategy to drive sales of Apple's own keyboard. Much more elegant, I have to admit, than the Logitech Rugged Combo for edu, although the Rugged Combo has much better protection (edu needs non-Bluetooth keyboard attachments for the sake of testing requirements, to prevent fraud during testing). BTW there hasn't been a processor upgrade - both 2018 and 2019 have the A10 Fusion.

Not exactly. The new 7th gen iPad doesn't support the 2nd gen. smart keyboard from the 11" iPad Pro. It supports only the first gen. smart keyboard, first released for the 10.5" iPad Pro in 2017, because just like that iPad Pro and the 3rd gen. iPad Air released last spring, the 7th gen. iPad has the smart connector on the side. And the same goes for Apple pencil support: iPad 7th gen. only supports the 1st gen. pencil previously sold for the 10.5" iPad Pro and the 3rd gen. iPad Air, but not the 2nd gen. pencil sold for use only with the latest iPad Pros.

If anything, I'd say Apple is trying to use the latest mid-range and budget iPads to sell their remaining stock of 1st gen. smart keyboards.

lol trade is is insane, they only willing to give 110 for a series 4 black stainless 44.... r u kidding me, last year they gve around 250 for a series 3 to 4 trade in. sorry Apple no way am I doing that
Really? Yikes that is awful. Well I wanted AOD but my series 4 gold stainless is gorgeous and I’m not parting with it only one year later for such a paltry sum. I probably won’t part with it at all. I still have my Series 2 Black sport that is my go-to option for swimming use.

I’ll wait for more sensors and more functions and definitely better sleep tracking.
