Iphone 8 + user here...and I still see no need to "upgrade"...Someone wake me when they have touchID under the screen....because faceID is slower than touchID....Every....Single....Time
It's just as fast. I went from an iPhone 6s with Touch ID to the Xs with Face ID and I don't really feel the difference in speed to unlock the iPhone. Face ID does have a small disadvantage vs Touch ID when it comes to using Apple Pay, since apple made it so that the user's face is never, ever, automatically scanned to authorize a payment without requiring to double press the side button first, as opposed to Touch ID where the fingerprint could be read as soon as the finger was placed on the reader and the iPhone was held near the store's reader.

So S5 isn’t faster than S4 processor (both are 2x S3), so maybe only a change for the compass sensor and/or the new display?

If it has all day display and similar performance specs, then I guess the improvement is that it's more power efficient? If that's the case, I'd be curious if the S5 can be run without always on display and how long it can go that way. I've been wanting to get an AW, but I'm just waiting for the battery life to improve a bit more.

I'm really on the fence. Upgrading from an S3 to an S4 was an easy decision because of the larger screen. The always on display would be really nice but I'm not sure if it would be worth the cost.

I believe there’s an error in this article at the time of writing this post. Ceramic does not start at $899 but starts at $1299. Please someone correct me if I’m wrong but this is what I’m seeing on Apple’s site.

Wow definitely could have skipped that keynote... Not because it was boring or the products aren't good enough, but because we knew like 90% of what was coming lol

But I am disappointed there was no "one more thing" of any kind :(

You know, not reading rumour sites will help tremendously with your personal problems.

;)

They both have their uses. Yes with Touch ID you can have the phone unlocked before you even take the phone out of your pocket, so faster in that sense, but we’re talking a second because Face ID can activate as you lift the phone to your face. I’m looking forward to when you can use both and the Touch ID under the screen is rumored for next year. Some people have issues with Touch ID for a variety of reason, like dry/cracked skin, dirty hands while cooking, chalk on hands while at the gym, wearing gloves etc.
I think the main disadvantage to using Face ID comes when using Apple Pay. With Touch ID, you could pay by simply holding the iPhone near the reader with your finger on the home button. With Face ID, holding the iPhone near the reader still triggers Apple Pay automatically, but the user's face isn't scanned automatically; instead, it is still required to double click the side button before the user's face can be scanned to authorize the payment.

Especially if you consider the much lower trade-in value compared with last year's model.

There is a new processor, the tech specs “64-bit dual-core S5 processorUp to 2x faster than S3 processor”. The series 4 tech specs had “S4 with 64-bit dual-core processor Up to 2x faster processor”.

That sounds like it. The compass is cool and a new SOC to handle the new display is also reasonable. There may be more to come as it is studied and opened up

Just because it is not carried anymore does not mean it is obsolete. The s3 is such a jump down that I feel there will be a solid market for the S4. I'm not too worried as I plan on keeping my S4 as a vacation watch. Its the aluminum model so I don't have to worry too much about what happens to it.

Those of you thinking of upgrading your watch who are on S3/S4 - realize you're paying 500+ dollars for an always on display - that might burn in on an OLED watch.
Not necessarily true unless you're ordering the LTE version. GPS only starts at $399 + tax. Still not very worth the upgrade, especially for those of us already using a series 4.

Any reason why we can't compare the Series 4 AW with the Series 5 Apple?
The compare function compares current models. Do you see the Series 4 listed for sale on the site?

All this "I'm not gonna upgrade from my S4" moaning on the site today. If you have a Series 4, you're not really the target audience for the Series 5. Come back next year. For those with older watches, or new customers, the Series 5 is awesome.

While always-on is nice if it’s a “freebie” as part of an upgrade (if was in the S4) then great. However, I’ve never raved about it, I have my watch so I can see the display, not everyone else.

Did Apple increase the stainless steel strap width for 44mm? I have the series 0 I want to keep the strap and I know it will fit but if Apple made the new one larger I'll order.
Not a problem, new 44 mm watch bands are interchangeable with older 42 mm bands. When I switched from my old 42 mm series 0 to a new 44 mm series 4, I had several watch bands that I was using with the old series 0 including two SS Milanese loops, and they all fit the series 4 just fine. Likewise, the sport band that came with my 44 mm series 4 fits the older 42 mm series 0 watch just fine (I tested it).

The only difference between the old and new SS milanese loop that I know of is that in the new one is made so that the magnetic end of the strap can pass completely through the lug where the band loops around (i.e that lug can be detached from the rest of the band). Which I guess they did so the series 4 apple watch with a milanese loop on it could be charged on a power mat.

really coveting those damn apple watches but haven't indulged as of yet

I waited til last year and got the S4 black stainless. VERY happy with it. No way I’d upgrade to the S5 with the crappy upgrade allowance.
