I like Paypal because it takes the money directly from my bank account. IOW it acts like a digital debit card. Money spent via a credit card is not as quickly missed (for me, anyway) as money coming from my bank account - which is why I prefer to use my credit card as little as possible.

Now then - can anyone tell me if the Canadian iTunes store has Paypal yet?

This.

The difference here in Canada Vs the US is not everyone HAS to have a credit card to exist. We have Interac which is a great debit system for merchants & wire transfer and Paypal does the same thing for online transactions. It ties in directly to your bank account. No credit card necessary.
Cant wait for it to appear in the Canadian store.

[One of my friend's accounts was hacked, and suddenly she was getting charged for .... (snip)

Your friend used an easily guessable password for PayPal?

Why do you use Paypal anyway?

Why not just use your debit/credit card directly? They have consumer protection built-in already.

For the same reason that people like the idea of tokenized payments: the merchant never sees my account number.

It's all about the convenience of not having to get a card replaced if the merchant gets hacked (or worse, is selling numbers). Yes, I'm covered, and a replacement is not a big deal in the overall scheme of things, but it's an annoyance after it happens a couple of times.

So if I have an equal choice of buying something online from two small merchants, I'll use the one that takes PayPal instead of wanting my CC number.

Took them long enough and naturally after I close my paypal account. No biggie though. I was okay using PP for iTunes/App store purchases, but after that hack I did not want my bank account info floating around on PP.

I am using a second debit card for online/big debit card purchases now. PP does not work for me. I spend less money since closing my PP account and I feel safer so that's a good thing.

why use Paypal? my answer.

I like to use Paypal, because in the Apple Store you can get six months to pay off your purchase with no interest applied for purchases over a certain amount. You can set up recurring autopayments just like any other card. And for some reason Paypal credit charges do not show up on your credit report, and thus does not count against your credit card utilization.

I saw my fiend having to go through all of the fuss following the PayPal hack. It affected everything, from her credit rating, to bank loans, to having to phone her credit card company every single time she used her credit card. So, I have my doubts about PayPal's security (It was a direct hack of a complicated password, not a phishing attack, and PayPal could not explian how it happened. No other passwords were compromised, which suggested that it was a PayPal problem. No doubt PayPal have tightened their security each year since then, and credit cards can get hacked too. Still, PayPal does not fill me with confidence.)

PayPal allows you to set up two-factor authorization. Each time I want to make a purchase using PayPal it sends a text to my cell phone with a one-time code that I have to enter before the purchase can be completed. Even if someone were able to hack my PayPal account they couldn't do anything with it unless they also had my cell phone.

If you don't want to go the text/cell phone route then they also offer a Security Key card (the same as many banks do) that creates a unique time-related code each time you want to make a purchase. The hacker would have to hack your PayPal account *AND* have physical possession of your card to make a purchase.
