I desperately hope that you are not as silly as your comparison.

If you like to do a comparison, it’s more like getting a gas station on top when buying a car. If this sounds stupid to you, it’s exactly what you are expecting.
No it isn't the same thing at all. It'd be like if you had to purchase the fuel tank separately when buying a car. That's what selling a phone without a charger is like. If people wanted free electricity with their phone purchase, your analogy would make sense but nobody has asked for that.

That’s another data point we don’t actually have.

How many people give away their charging brick and cable when they get rid of the phone?
Fine. I said "they usually sell..." not ged rid of. When you sell an item, you are likely to get more money if it is with all accessories...
Let's say you are selling your old iPhone without the included charger (keeping it for yourself)... the person who buys it will still need to get charger if they didn't have one. Bottom line is +1 charger purchased.

I have not seen a printer using a proprietary power cable/adaptor maybe since the late 90s. Pretty much majority of them have power supply built-in and use standard power cables.

Chargers with USB-A, yes. Chargers with USB-C, no.
you need to look at HP printers then definitely not standard.

Got it. Because you haven’t seen your original analogy was bad. Took multiple posts across multiple days to get to that.

In 2022 usb c while not as ubiquitous as usb a is common.

But at some point everyone already has a charging brick and cable and it’s only people buying their first device ever that won’t already have one. So the person you’re selling your iPhone to will already have a charging brick they can use meaning you can keep the one you have and Apple doesn’t need to include one in the box.

Thats the logic we are already working to now.

Some people are working very hard to defend this move by Apple. I assume they are an Apple customer, so it makes no sense why someone would defend something that costs them extra money.
That’s the point, it doesn’t cost them extra money as they continue to use the charging bricks they already have! It costs them no more money and helps reduce the amount of charging bricks manufactured.

They should just include a voucher for a charger in the box. Then nobody gets a charger they don't need and the environment is happy. And for those that do need a charger, they can get one without extra expense. If you say this also is a bad idea, it means you care about Apple's profit margins more than the environment.
The conclusion is based on illogic. While we’re figuring out how to screw apple and get the customer a free charger here’s my suggestion. What Apple could do is provide a voucher and raise the price by some $$$. You can then exchange the voucher for a charger or refund.

I’d say there is a high likelihood that after 15 years of iPhone and probably about a decade of Lightning cables that person at some stage won’t have to make another purchase in order to have a working charging solution.

In a similar fashion I gave up on the included rubbish earbuds that used to come with phones and other media players and just bought a decent pair myself.

It’s not costing me money personally. Maybe a first time cell buyer. This is 2022, a lot of the world has cell phones.

Because the scale is totally different? Because the MacBook charger is not common?
Agreed. Even bricks that aren’t sold with phones can be used to charge phones (e.g, the brick that comes with a fire tv will charge your phone). That’s certainly not the case for MacBooks.

As many people suspected, it’s a money grab by Apple by not including the charger and earphones with the newer iPhones. Helping the environment… not so much.
It’s pretty much what the government of Brazil found and why it imposed its ruling.

Have the chargers (& wired earphones) available for anyone who wants one.

Too many people defending Apple as it does no wrong whatever it does.

That story was from 2020 just after Apple had taken the charger out of the box.

It would be interesting to see an independent study nearly two years later to assess the impact. Does anyone know of one?

You’re basing your conclusion on a two year article from 2020 that uses suppositions and without a follow up to understand if the article held any water or sank like a rock.

Lack of media savviness is a real issue of our time. People will generally believe any source as long as it aligns with their pre-existing beliefs.

But yes, we need an independent study to investigate what impact removing the charger from the box has had.

Doesn’t matter that it’s a 2020 article as the same issue itself continues to this day which is the point.

Would be nice if news media or independent firms do follow up studies about the environmental impact of the issue. Until then, it’s whatever news is available.
That doesn’t make it less of a point.

Too many defending Apple.
Just because you don’t need a charger does not mean other people feel the same way.
Issue keeps repeating itself.

You know what would really be an environmental savings? If phones came without the exterior housing. Still completely usable. If you hold it the right way. Besides, a lot of people put cases on anyway. Of course, Apple would be happy to sell you the housing for an additional fee if you really need it...
Nah, the bigger savings would be just to stop making any products at all. MacBook, done. AirPods, done. But, NOT just that, it would be MUCH better for the environment if their new campus didn’t exist. Leave all the trees, get rid of the building, plant more trees and then it could be a REAL Apple park. Oh, and return those data centers to their natural state as well.

Knowing Brazilian justice system, and level of corrution of these people, the logics might be:
1 - Apple will launch new products this September and October
2 - Judges do what they did in the eve
3 - They will request/accept a lot of hardware for their friends and family
4 - They cancel this action

is how things work in this place.

Study hard, my friend.
Nope, I’m getting nothing! Apple takes the chargers out of the box, people buy non-Apple chargers (and those non-Apple charger companies don’t even pay a MFi licensing fee)… they literally missed the biggest money grab of all in not making the chargers proprietary. Even for someone switching from Android, they can use the USB-C charger that came with their old phone, just plug in the cable Apple includes.
