Yup. I want all these people who are in favor of Apple to return their macbook chargers as well. I mean you can charge macbooks using any USB-PD charger, no? So why do they need a charger? It's for the environment!

I wouldn't be surprised if Apple within 5 years makes it an add-on. They just need powerful USB-C chargers to become more ubiquitous.

You can see signs today, when you have to pay extra to get a better charger.

I have a single USB-C charging brick. It was from my iPad Pro, but that's my only charger, which means I need to switch out the cable because the iPP cable is USB-C to USB-C, while iPhone is still USB-C to Lightning.

Apple didn't "help" the environment. If I buy a 2nd charging brick, Apple are simply diverting the waste to another vendor. Apple can claim their move is "green" and put up some BS stats, while another company picks up the sale and is responsible for the waste from the manufacturing of their product.

It's disingenuous.

YOU decided to buy an additional charger for your own convenience. Apple can rightly wash their hands.

But think about the next time you're buying a new phone. You don't need to buy a new charger and Apple doesn't have to provide one for you. So that's one charger not needed.

So a new charger can during its lifespan probably support 2-5 iPhones saving Apple from making 1-4 chargers.

And those who do not have a charger?...Don't they have to pay for the one they need??
But that’s really the whole point, most people will already have a charger that’ll charge whatever new phone they buy, even if it’s a really old charger that is much slower than newer charging standards, it’ll still charge it.

We already know the following facts - most people buying a new iPhone previously owned an iPhone. So most of those people won’t need a new charging cable or brick.

For the people who are buying their first iPhone, they are probably coming from an Android phone, most of which have included USB-C charging bricks for a few years now.

So you end up with a relatively small group of people who have neither an old iPhone charger or a USB-C brick, and they are the group who will need to purchase something additional.

But of course they are a relatively small percentage of iPhone buyers.

2) getting nothing and then needing to buy a separate thing.

Apple by doing this has reduced the need for approx. 200 millions charger per year to be included with the iPhone.

Even if customers buy 50 million chargers from Apple and third parties it's still a huge reduction. Also a lot of those who are buying their first USB-C charger because it didn't come with their new iPhone, don't need to purchase a new charger with their next phone.

If you buy an USB-C charger for your phone now, you can probably use it for 10-15 years for all your new phones in that period.

They should just include a voucher for a charger in the box. Then nobody gets a charger they don't need and the environment is happy. And for those that do need a charger, they can get one without extra expense. If you say this also is a bad idea, it means you care about Apple's profit margins more than the environment.

What's best for the environment and climate are ZERO chargers.

Your proposition increases the number of chargers produced.

If chargers become more expensive, fewer people will buy them new, even if needed. They'll find other ways to charge their phones.

This should have been done in the U.S. too. So many people out there buy iPhones and they have no idea they have to buy and pay for the charger separately. Or Apple could have provided a free charger if needed.

Think of going to Mcdonalds and ordering a 🍔 Big mac. But you don't get any buns and cheese. You have to ask for the buns and cheese to be included for some extra $.
I desperately hope that you are not as silly as your comparison.

If you like to do a comparison, it’s more like getting a gas station on top when buying a car. If this sounds stupid to you, it’s exactly what you are expecting.

Some do. I have them from all the iPhones before they stopped. But there will always be first timers who will need one. I think what made it worse is they cable is now USB-C. Near everyone should have some sort of USB-A port on something, but C isn't as common.
That depends. Mercedes, for example, switched to USB-C years ago. And if someone wants to follow your thought, we would still use RS-232 or something.

Good of them to see through the BS of “better for the environment”. It’s better for Apples bottom line to not include it. They do it for no other reason.
Exactly. If Apple really had a genuine concern about the environment, they should only release a new iPhone every two years… ditch wireless charging (think of all the energy lost globally during conversion)… and maybe reduce the number of Watch Bands etc 😂

How does releasing a phone every two years help?

If you were the small small minority who purchased a iPhone 11 Pro the year prior, and even then that was the older 18W charger not the 20W charger we have now.

Well yeah, that's my point. I didn't own one thing that supported USB-C before 2020. Everyone that I know who purchased the iPhone 12 and newer bought a separate charger with their purchase. Not very environmentally friendly huh?
Don’t blame Apple (or anyone else) for your circle of friends. I have been charging wirelessly for years.

The cost for a 5W charger would in those volumes would probably be around $1-$3.

Let's say Apple calculated the price of the iPhone would be $987 with the charger. They could then sell it for $985 without reducing profit margins. But Apple doesn't do pricing like that in both cases it would cost $999.

Or maybe they calculated it to be $1005 with the charger and reducing the cost with $2 makes Apple more positive to reduce their margin and go for $999 instead of lets say $1029 or $1099

It's just to many factors at play to say if it affected pricing in any meaningful way.

Also, why shouldn't company make profit on being environmental friendly?
Is there a requirement one should suffer?
The iPhone 11 Pro included an 18w charger, so I don’t know where your 5w argument is coming from. And, understanding that shipping and logistics are a bit part of operations costs, if Apple is able to - due to reduced box sizes - fit 3x more phones into the same spaces as before, shouldn’t they should pass some of those savings onto their customers? That’s what ethical businesses do. Up until Apple sells their next product, they never reduce prices of previous products; customers purchase at full prices throughout the year. So, go on with the defense.

😂 I'm sorry. Please can you explain the logic behind you statement? 😂 Just because people try and sell you stuff doesn't mean you have to buy it does it? Serious question. You don't buy everything that people try and sell you do you? No, of course not. My current MacBook Pro was purchased in 2018 and before that 2008: 10 years! My current iPhone was purchased in 2020 and before that 2015: 5 years! Now... What are you saying? :)
what I am saying is they f... should not sell every year a new phone if they worry about the waste
of course they not forcing you to buy their product every 12 months but thats not the case here isnt it?
next time when you buy a new tv cut the charging cable send it back! I am sure you may have some spare ones around

So many people defending Apple... If they cared about the environment, they’d have released USB-C iPhone some five years ago. With about 200 million iPhones a year, people accumulated over a billion Lighting cables and chargers (up to iPhone 11 release) that will likely become obsolete in the upcoming years.
I’d guess most people who bought new iPhone since 12 had to order a charger anyway. So much to the environment. Apple is a business company, they’re here to make money first, deal with it. They took the environmental "savings" with gratitude.

Not a successful money grab in Brazil as they’re unable to sell ANY phones without chargers at this time. Perhaps the EU will be next to disallow phones without chargers? Wouldn’t be a horrible thing as they could resolve their Gateway problem with Apple in one fell swoop!
the EU Directive started the whole charger thing they see it as ewaste.

You don't need an USB-C charger to charge the iPhone 12.

If you upgraded from an older iPhone, you could have used the same charger for the new phone.
It came with USB-C to Lightning.
I sold my old cable with my old phone.

I bought an apple watch last year and I was pretty surprised to find that it had no charger included. I have no charger with USB-C here and had to use my macbook pro charger.

There’s probably some impact in not including chargers but they should just make them free for people that will need it. Easy apple store gift card included. People that aleady have one wont prob get into the hassle of ordering the free one.

And if they were willing to be really honest, they should just release their charger selling numbers prior and after this change. Simple.

I think that’s where you're wrong, I think people will order the ‘free’ charger even if they don’t need one. This is why you need to charge for it to make people actually think about whether they need it or not.

The argument to "use your old charger and cable..." is not really good. When people purchase new phones, they usually sell (or give to relatives) the old one, together with the charger and cable. That leaves them with a new phone and no charger.
Apple should include a charger with every phone, just like they do include with iPad.

Alternatively, at the time of purchase, they should offer a charger free of charge, or a $29 discount if you don't get the charger.

That’s another data point we don’t actually have.

How many people give away their charging brick and cable when they get rid of the phone?
