They are working on leaving China. China manufactures 90% (or so)of the world’s goods. It’s not easy to pack up and leave.

No. I used a brick and usb a to lightning to charge my AirPods at first. I suspect many did that as well.

True, but the manufacturing costs saved, environmental savings due to not manufacturing 100s of millions of bricks, paper, shipping, fossil fuels and additional downstream impact.

I personally don’t have an issue with esim…until I do I suppose.
"I personally don't" is about to be customer service nightmares when people personally do. I'm still without 5G after moving away from E-SIM. Going on two weeks now. It's not just about who will be affected but how badly I am getting treated by a carrier right now. If I'm an indication, well whatever.

They were not.
My Q10 was smaller than my iphone mini and had a replaceable battery.

This years iphone are so humongous, they have enough space for a battery cover and casing.
The q10 was a soap bar phone, which is not sleek and also lacking much of the hardware of the day.

The iPhone 14 is also ip68. Are there many phones out there tgst are water proof with removable batteries?

Not clear on how this dovetails into the convo. You have cell service but not 5g and the carrier is unable to resolve the issue ? Additionally the carrier is mistreating you?

I prefer a phone with an easily replaceable battery over a waterproof phone. Since the former no longer exist thanks to Apple -because they started the trend and all others followed the lead-, at this point I’d rather have no phone at all than have an iphone or Android (regardless of the hardware manufacturer), which is what I intend to do when my current iphone xs stops working. Apple has completely ruined the cellphone experience.

That’s clearly your choice in 2022 to not have any cell phone at all. For me I would at least walk around with a prepaid flip phone. But to each their own.

Another strawman, how novel.
I mean, if THAT is what you think a strawman is, then my assumption is that you don’t know what one is. :)

A strawman is more like:
Apple: We’re removing the charger because it means we make way fewer chargers and that’s better for the environment.
Strawman: Well WHY do you make phones every year? You should make them every 3 years.
Apple: So, we were talking about the chargers…

I'm not even convinced it actually cut down waste. They switched the included cable to USB-C -> Lightning rather than USB-A, and many people don't have extra USB-C charging bricks lying around. That resulted in a lot of people now having to buy separate chargers with their iPhones, and those of course came in their own packaging and generated more waste (and emissions from transportation) than just packaging it with the phone would have.

I'm not even quite sure why they did it. The charger can't have been expensive to manufacture and there isn't exactly a huge opportunity cost to it either (not everyone is going to buy the official Apple branded charger). It just doesn't make much sense to me.
I’m way too late, but this. A family member recently got an iPhone 11, and it came with, you guessed it, a lightning to USB-C cable. My entire family has exactly one USB-C power adapter… the one I use on my iPad Air 5. Thus, they included a cable that’s completely useless. I advised to throw the cable in a drawer and use existing ones. Had we wanted to use the included cable, we would’ve had to buy a separate power adapter… that comes in its own little box with leaflets. Had that been our first iPhone, we would’ve had to buy a separate USB-C power adapter without the possibility of us using existing ones. How environmental of them!

BTW how much are you getting paid for your unconditional defense of Apple? because you blindly defend them regardless of what they do and you reply to every single post showing even the slightest disagreement with Apple, so you must be getting paid well for doing it. Either that or you’re an employee of the company, but I’m sure you don’t do it for free..

Yes, we received the UMC with our Raven S and Model Y too. I’m just saying the policy changed recently with Tesla. As for orifices, the iPhone still comes with the lightning orifice. With so many Apple devotees upgrading every year, how many truly don’t already have a compatible charger? How many do you need to hoard?

With Teslas and other automakers adopting USB-C ports you can still charge in the car with the charging cable that comes with an iPhone, or possibly wirelessly charge. It is a small minority of new iPhone users that absolutely cannot plug the provided charging cable into either their car, laptop/desktop, or some existing USB hub/charger/battery pack to charge. Charging options are not quite as limited as they were years ago.
I'm not hoarding chargers. I have exactly ONE USB-C charger (which I bought from Apple for $19 with my iPhone 12 mini). Even my USB-A chargers are scarce...they get stolen (er, "borrowed") by friends and visitors, or lost during travel, etc. over the course of a device's lifetime. But, really, it's not about where a buyer can scrounge a place to charge (a $2000 Apple laptop, a wireless charging pad in a $200K Porsche, a desktop plug in the Admiral's Club, etc.) - it's more about the idiocy of purchasing a premium mobile phone with no charging method provided. It's just ludicrous on the face of it.

It's also ludicrous for Apple to claim to care about fossil fuel emissions when they require their CEO to fly in a private jet using far more fossil fuels than if he flew commercial. If this was the real reason they would require him to fly commercial always.

I haven’t heard about TC being required to fly anywhere in recent years. Could you please provide a link with more context on how he is required to fly in a jet these days? Not that ultimately it would take away from any environmental achievements elsewhere, but it would look silly right now.

My advice is to see this as an opportunity, and use the lack of charging bricks in your house as the perfect chance to streamline your entire charging setup. Take me for example. As I am using a 3-in-1 Belkin charger for my iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods (it charges all 3 of them wirelessly), I have absolutely no need for any of these products to come with charging bricks that I will never use (heck, even the bundled cables are still sitting in the original packaging). And because I have a number of electronic gadgets around the house, I have no desire to fiddle with individual port chargers that hog precious power outlets.

It's the same thing with my M1 MBA (I use a 60w Anker charger over the included 30w charger). A 3-port anker charger handles my iPad Pro, microphone (from work) and (when necessary) my Apple TV remote. Maybe I am part of the problem, but I have purchased quite a number of chargers for my room, EDC and workplace, and each of them is better than any charger Apple could have included with their products at any rate.

There are multi-port chargers (some come with multiple usb-c and A ports) that you can use for your devices. I recently just bought a 100w 3-port charger to replace my existing 65w one (which was having issues charging my laptop, phone and microphone simultaneously).

You can still bring the usb-c to lightning cable around with you for when you need to charge your iPhone 11 in a pinch (eg: plugging it into the usb-c port of a laptop or even the iPad Air.

It has always been about short term pain for long term gain. The fact that change takes time should not cause those of us that know the limitations to dig in our heels.

A quick Google search on the web will reveal that he is required to fly via private jet. It's in SEC filings. It's been reported on several times by the media and is on the public record that he flies that way. It's the hypocrisy of it all. He flies around in a private jet and yet Apple claims the reason they won't include a power adapter with iPhones is because they think that would be bad for the environment.

Well he certainly hasn’t been airborne much then, pandemics and all. I’m sure he’s a tad busy and a tad famous which should make pre pandemic trips on public airlines a nightmare as well. I’m sure there are plenty other areas where they could also improve but that doesn’t necessarily take away from the achievements so far. Are we going to now also condem any Apple employee who drives their car to work? Or are we going to attempt to deny that creating less waste is somehow irrelevant because those employees who do use public transport use combustion engines?

Driving to work versus chartering a private jet for plane trips are two very different things.

It's the principle of an example being set by the CEO. I don't like being lectured to by companies where the CEO clearly isn't practicing what the company preaches.

How and why does an old charger become dangerous with time? Charging at a slower rate is fine.
Yes I've never had a problem with any charger except one I got from Anker once right away, and they replaced it with a newer model for free. It's the cables that fray or stop working eventually. At least the A > L ones. Haven't had an issue with a C > L yet. And at least a 5W can charge until you can get faster if you desire.

True, I guess a better example is a non-techy type person goes and buys an iPhone and when they get it home they can't charge it. Hopefully someone will tell them they need the charger, but if they just buy it from a physical store and no one tells them, they cannot charge their phone. There's literally no excuse for that. How anyone can defend that is mind blowing.
Exactly what is so hard about the website having a popup to alert you there is no charger and asking if you need to buy one? Or salespeople asking this which a good salesperson would do anyhow to upsell

I used the usb-c to lightning cable that came with my APP with the power adapter for my iPad Pro. The cable is not useless.
I advised to throw the cable in a drawer and use existing ones.
Good advice.
Had we wanted to use the included cable, we would’ve had to buy a separate power adapter…

So because they included a cable that you couldn’t use, they shouldn’t try to take steps to be more environmentally friendly?

That’s because it’s apple’s brick, you’re paying a premium just for their brand name. For much less you can buy a 3rd party USB-C power brick that will do the exact same job but won’t have Apple’s branding on it.
Exactly the worst example is the MagSafe wireless charging brick. $100 for like 2200MAh when I can get anker for like 30-40 for 5-10k mAh

Verbiage matters. Saying “everybody” is easy to disprove with a single exception. Saying most is much harder to disprove.
I would definitely believe most especially if you added people who use smartphones. Absolutes are always false. I learned this in like elementary school for True/False tests

You know what causes an even larger impact on the environment? Data centers dotted around the globe requiring resources to be dug out of the ground for the equipment and the huge amount of cooling required to keep them going. Additionally, all the buildings and retail sites around the world that are also making a huge dent in the environment. Not to mention the millions and millions of products they are shipping around the world just this week and constantly.

I'm not sure if that happens right now on the website but that would be a good start at least (if it's not).
