I would be more surprised if Apple retains the current screen size. It must move up.. driven by the competition. Apple don't exist in isolation.

New iPhone

Looks like 9to5 got the idea...

Yeah that would be called progress. Why would any one need to fly when they can take the train? Why would any one need a car when horses have been doing a great job for hundreds of years?

See what I'm getting at there?

I think with these examples you have side-stepped the point.

BiteMyApple is not advocating a restriction of change full-stop, but that for him/her, 3.5" is the limit of a workable screen size (for a mobile phone).

This is shaping up nicely...

  • 4 inch display at 960x640 (288 PPI) or (I hope) 1440x960 (432 PPI)
  • A6 at 32nm w/ a quad-core Cortex A9 and a dual-core SGX543 or (if 1440x960) a tri-core SGX543 or lower clocked quad-core SGX543
  • 1GB RAM, bigger battery (and much better battery life), 1-2MP FaceTime camera

BMA asked for someone to explain why there is a move to a larger device..... Progress is that reason. We are doing more with our phones so a larger screen is the only logical progression. Why make it smaller and harder to see?

Beyond 4"? I don't think so...

here's my tuppence....

Maybe it will be beyond 4" but I have a feeling the new iPhone or iPhone 5 whatever it will be called will stay at 3.5" but go with a completely different design and set up inside the phone compared with iPhone 4S which is almost a dead certainty.

I can't really see the new iPhone stretch beyond 4", I am not convinced of the need to do that at the present time despite fierce competition from Samsung, HTC and so on with their huge sized phones. I can't really see the need for a bigger iPhone. For some, its vital to watch better videos/films on the bigger iPhone but I don't believe in that. I only believe in the great package of the iPhone, the immensely superb iOS, huge number of apps and the ease of using it and would disregard the need to make it bigger than the present size. But for me, the real question is whether Apple will come up with a brand new iPhone that dazzles us enough to buy it regardless of where we are - only one way to find out - wait for it to come out in June (extremely unlikely) or October (more likely)! Me? I can't wait for it to come out... dying to get rid of iPhone 4 for the new one...

I hope this is true then everyone who says apple will NEVER increase screen size can eat crow. Let the arguing begin

This kind of confirms it - doesn't it?

Pretty much. The Wall Street Journal is a very credible source when it comes to Apple rumors. They don't report something until they have solid evidence. I suspect it might be an avenue for controlled leaks from Apple PR.

I was listening to this week's MacBreak Weekly earlier and what Leo and crew said makes a lot of sense regarding the longer 4" iPhone rumor -- it will happen b/c LTE has a bigger radio and is a battery sucker. That is to say extra space is needed to make room for a bigger battery and the LTE radio. It won't be wider b/c the width of the current iPhone is perfect for the avg. persons hand.

I suspect it might be an avenue for controlled leaks from Apple PR.

Esp. now with NYT lobbing bottle rockets at Apple to pump up circulation.

Same speculation was done for Samsung Galaxy SIII:
1080p Display
2 GB RAM
16 MP Camera
and what not. The Specs you mentioned, 432 ppi, is not possible on such a small screen(for now).
I think they would move to 4 inch but in same 300-350 ppi and still call it "retina".

No-one is suggesting a shrinking fo the existing screen size. As for a logical progression, it needs to be remembered that the device is a phone also, and with such a purpose come another set of design restrictions, one of which is size. If not the iPad would also be a phone.

If more needs to be done on a phone, perhaps the answer is not to alter the format of the device so that it compromises its primary function, but instead to seek an alternative method of satisfying all usage criteria.

A display size increase enabled by a shrinking bezel is one such posibility, and I am sure that these issues are in the forefront of the apple design teams mind.

But but but 4" or bigger is just way too big for too many MR forum hands apparently based on so many previous comments in other threads. How will those people possibly be able to work their iPhones?!

I'm waiting to see all the postings from the many people on these forums saying they don't want a larger screen size, the current size is perfect and Apple should not change it to make it bigger.

Or rather see how they suddenly change their mind then they see Apple actually launching the product.

Just like the many (and I mean many) on these forums that slagged off the design of the current iPhone4. saying it was a cheap and nasty looking Chinese fake phone, before it was actually realised it was the genuine Apple product.

Can't stand large phones. I had a 3.7" Google Nexus One, and that was as large as I would ever want.

Every time I see one of those huge screened samsung monstocities I immediately think, yuck.

They are laughably large, and so ineligant. I understand that there is clearly a market for this screen size, but I for one like my phone to be pocketable, and not look like im holding a dinner tray to my face when making calls.

Funny - My Samsung SkyRocket (just like my iPhone 4) are both extremely pocketable. And hardly looks like I'm holding a dinner tray to my phone.

Hyperbole is hyperbole. You and everyone else can say you prefer a smaller phone - and might get some upvotes and a chuckle for referring to holding a phone that looks like a dinner tray. But at the same time - the comparison is pretty silly.

If the next iPhone looks anything like that mockup, I'll be really upset. Also if the display only gets taller but not wider, I'll also be upset. Competition is fierce, and now's not the time for Apple to be getting lazy.

Some months prior to the release of the iPad 3 references to the quad-core A6 where found in the iOS 5 Beta, so it should definitely be ready for the iPhone 5, and hopefully at 32nm. And the larger screen size and 1GB RAM are all pretty much guaranteed at this point.

Such a high PPI may be possible with an IGZO display.
I think they would move to 4 inch but in same 300-350 ppi and still call it "retina".
With a 4 inch display at 960x640 it's only 288 PPI, and 1440x960 is the next step up from 960x640. (They can't go anything in-between that.)
