how would that change anything? there are an infinite number of long-term posters of questionable mental capacity on these boards.

Although this news is not confirmation, when the new iPhone is unveiled I will laugh in those faces that continually say the screen size will remain the same.

Assuming that the above is actually possible, I would definitely buy one. But I think increasing the size of the handset itself to accomodate a screen (eg. Samsung Galaxy S3 or Note) would deter a lot of people.

It seems to me that...

a) Many people here assume that the majority of iPhone users are fellow apple geeks - most people love the iPhone as is (with its supposedly micro display) and...

b) that people are perhaps in actuality more frustrated with the lack of change in iPhone design, and a change in screen size meant is just a way of forcing a total redesign. Coming from an android user that switched to iPhone specifically because the best android phones had become too large, the current iPhone screen size is a delightful blend of size and functionality.

I just don't think they will change the aspect ratio. Screen size may change, pixel size may change, but not the ratio.

Can they keep the form factor and just make the screen bigger? Reducing the black glass at the upper and lower ends, move the speaker up and the home button (or make it virtual)?

Edit: Didn't see the above mentioned image, that was exactly my point

it's primarily a phone, so i'd like to carry it around in my pocket.
i like the size of the iphone ..
a bigger screen means bigger phone.
the 3.5 is really okay for me..

everythin' else.. we'll see!
cheers!

I really like this mock up!

I don't care how big it is as long as they retain the aspect ratio. All the Samsung users among my friends try to show me how great their phones are, and half of them wind up dropping them because they're just too big.

Bigger screen, same dimensions

I believe Apple will bring a larger screen in the iPhone 5 BUT the dimensions of the phone will not change. How would they do this? Here's how.

The screen resolution would become something like 768x1152 or more likely 720x1280. Now as a developer, this would represent a big challenge –*requiring me to rewrite the app. This fragmentation would not suit Apple. All iPhone apps are 320x480 or 2x Retina at 640x960. How does Apple handle this? Simple.

The screen becomes the bevel.

In normal operation, the screen "blanks" using an preset e-ink border technology (white or black to match your phone). In other words, the phone wouldn't look differently until a fullscreen mode is requested. Then the e-inked edges turns off and you have a full 720p HD screen. Apple has applied for patents for this technology, as well as turning off parts of the screen when not in use. Per their MO, they applied for this for some other reasons.

In addition, this would allow the edges of the screen to receive touch events when not in use, extending the touch surface and possibly with an API for developers to use. The touch surface on the sides would be 20 pixels and on top/bottom around 160pixel each. Look at your iPhone... it's 16:9. this means:

The home button disappears.

The trick then is to "hide" the proximity sensor, camera and speaker behind the single front panel which I think they could have accomplished.

But IF Apple has done this (remember that the iPhone 5 needs to be an amazing upgrade). If they have done this, they have made a very usable phone with an HD, Retina screen that is an edge-to-edge screen when needed which would be AWESOME.

I for one welcome the change. I've been wanting a larger iPhone screen since the announcement of the iPhone 4. It's why I've been holding off on upgrading.

now I get it

+1

I couldn't agree more. I used to want a bigger screen when I first got the iPhone 4, but since March 16th of this year, when I brought my first iPad, I since rescinded my want. There is purpose and function to Apple's devices, and now I get it.

Long form reading or more demanding task is best on iPad, whereas, short task/away from home is best on iPhone. I used to browse the web more on the iPhone, before I brought my iPad, but now I hardly use the phone except to text or make calls.

I own a Galaxy Note and I can reach the full screen with one hand. Since I'm more interested in having a truly mobile tablet that lets me do my ONE daily phone call than in a phone that can only run a tiny, unusable web browser, I very much prefer the Note's form factor over everything else on the market.

For me, the iPhone is too small. But even if there were a 5.3" version of it available, it would still run a restricted, crippled operating system that would always get in my way with its many unnecessary stop signs.

So really there's no way you would buy an iPhone, unless it was an Androi with an Apple logo. So...why are you here?

Does it really matter? At least 90% of us are going to get one no matter how it turns out. We love the iPhone and are Technology junkies for Apple. :D

I can't see Apple expecting all the app developers to rewrite their software for a new aspect ratio - that's just ridiculous. The new screen panels may be 4", but that's likely in proportion with the existing 3:2 aspect ratio, meaning it's both taller and wider.

aspect ratio could be different even without a rewrite,

as these mockups show, the home screen has an extra row of apps
so apple could also add the multitasking bar under apps that are not rewritten for the new aspect ratio as a default in iOS (better be with an option to turn it on/off).
People who'd like to rewrite their apps, and that'll be most, will rewrite, if only for the sake of their apps looking better without multitask bar.

lot's of options, without the need for a rewrite

I'm not sure I like that aspect ratio, but I like the taper. Even still, the old 3G/3GS design feels better in your hand than the 4/4S.

Not everyone agrees. I prefer the solid feel of the squarish sides of the 4/4s. All these tapered devices feel like they are about to slip out of my grasp.

My point exactly. Your 90% of macrumors amounts to very little, and is likely incorrect anyhow.
