Funny - My Samsung SkyRocket (just like my iPhone 4) are both extremely pocketable.

I could not agree more. I was using both an iPhone 4S and Samsung Skyrocket, the experience was terrific.

For my personal cross platform environment consisting of various OS X, Windows 7, and Linux computers, I've got both iOS and Android mobile OS's syncing and working across all devices quite nicely.

Last week I picked up an HTC One X, gave the Skyrocket to a family member, and now I have the HTC & iP4S as my two phones of choice. The only reason I moved on from the Skyrocket is because of my addiction to all things tech. I have an insatiable curiosity and interest in experiencing the full spectrum of smartphones and laptops, because mobile communications and computing is the environment I work and live in. There's a lot of great things to say about both smartphone platforms.

If Apple gives us anything 4.3" or larger on the upcoming iPhone, I will be positively thrilled. It's the only major issue I have with Apples smartphone. Besides I have a pre-order waiting to be filled for a 4.8" Galaxy S III, so it would be fantastic to have a modern sized display on iPhone 5 or whatever they decide to call it.

The bottom line is the two best brands of smartphones in my opinion, are Apple and Samsung :)

Another thing to consider is the impact of mobile sites for phones. Some of which make it as easier to use the mobile site on a smaller phone than the full ste on a larger phone, which would involve more precise input.

I have to disagree with this...I think Samsung phones feel very cheap. As far as Android devices go, I think Motorola and HTC produce much better units. The RAZR Maxx and HTC One X, from a design and materials standpoint, blow away anything Samsung offers.

If they did, it would be purely coincidental. AT&T doesn't offer yearly upgrades based on the introduction of a new iPhone.

They don't but they did.
When the 4 came out they allowed early upgrades to try and lock in customers before the release of the Verizon iPhone.

Really?

Well - even if it is confirmed that Apple orderd those screens, somebody who draws the conlusion that it must be for iPhone 5 is bit quick.

It might be as well for other product (e.g. for remote control for highly speculative Apple TV)

I still find these claims a bit difficult to believe. Although they seem to come now from reputable sources. I think Apple will have to bring Jobs back as they did with "Tupac" to be able to explain how they had a retina display, but now it is less retina than before. Perhaps saying that the customers are getting older and holding their phones farther from their eyes so they won't see the difference ;) I'm sure developers are going to have a lot of fun supporting all different ratios. For me, I think I'm ok with the current size. A taller phone will protrude from my shirt pocket. On the other hand it will get the microphone closer to my voice.

About those comments that would like to see less amount of edge on the sides of the phone. That might make it less usable. In particular with cases, or the Apple bumper.

I'm all for a bigger phone in any shape or size. Must be a lot of people with tiny hands and fingers that want the smaller size. I am amazed at how many people here are complaining over every little thing. They will probably sell more iphone 5's than any other so far.

I'm a bit against the iPhone getting (even) bigger, couldn't they reduce the top and bottom bezel while making the screen bigger, to maintain the same device size?

For all you iFixit people out there: is there something special in the top and bottom of the iPhone that simply cannot be made smaller?

I feel sorry for the person that made it lol..no one likes it. <the next iphone mockup>

...until of course, Apple rolls out the next iPhone that actually looks just like that and then there will be an overwhelming swing of support, "my credit card is ready,", "can't wait to get in line for this one", "I've waited so long for this iPhone", "it's perfect", "I'm already camped out in line at my local store", et all.

As to the screen size, right now it seems the bulk of this crowd dislikes it. But if Apple actually rolls it out, so many of these same people will flip to however Apple spins it. I can already hear the arguments about "widescreen movies perfectly fitting now", "since iPhone shoots 1080p widescreen, it makes sense that it would adopt that shape", "the extra row of icons on the home screen is so much better than prior versions", "the bigger keyboard works better for my size hands", etc.

Instead of a black bar for "legacy" apps, maybe the new iOS just uses the extra space for something else? Maybe another variant of notifications without covering the full space allocated to an app? Maybe helpful informational or navigational benefits that will suddenly make sense to have on screen most of the time?

I recall when iPad 1 rolled out and the crowd here blasted those who wanted it come with a forward facing "isight" camera. There are long threads where the crowd bashed and bashed that concept. Then, a year later, Apple rolls out a "facetime" camera and some of those same people are gushing about upgrading "because now it's perfect", etc.

All you need to turn this "terrible", "ugly", "Apple would never" design into "best iPhone ever" is for Apple to roll it out. The naysayers will be so quick to flipflop their appreciation for every aspect of it. Sure a few will still find fault (there's always a few), but I'm referring to the crowd-size swing (from "hate it" to "love it" once they see Apple go some way).

Intel processors made no sense until Apple adopted them. Widescreen (not 4:3) iMacs made no sense until Apple rolled them out. A 1080p :apple:TV made no sense until Apple launched one. Etc. It's always the same: __________ is dumb until it looks like Apple is going that way; then it's the best thing ever.

All that said... personally, I think a bigger screen would be a great idea. It's not like it is a massive change if this rumor is true. I suggest diagramming the current size phone & screen vs. this rumored one, break out the scissors and cut them out and set them side by side. Diagonal measurements have been a long-term marketing ploy to maximize the sound of size. A change from 3.5" to 4" diagonally does not result in a huge difference when measured in width & height. Break out Pages or similar, use the rulers and mock them up yourself. It's not a huge change.

In fact, the mockup could be evolved to pinch the top & bottom (non-screen sections) a bit more resulting in an overall phone size not that different than the 4s. If so, you end up with a box just about exactly the same height & width with a bigger touchscreen for all of it's functionality. If I was a betting on this rumor, I would bet it will scale in both height & width so that all existing apps still "fit" perfectly (see post #232). Yes, that might mean a slightly wider body (but it will be slight). Apple's already called the iPad pixel density "retina" (too), so modestly reducing the iPhone pixel density by simply expanding a 3.5" screen to a 4" screen will still be "retina" (per iPads definition).

Lastly, recall the backlash (here) when "4s" launched without really looking that different from "4". Even though the guts were significantly evolved, this crowd seemed overly fixated on the cosmetics. Apparently some of us feel it is very important that the new phone is obviously new to anyone (else) who sees it. Here you have a rumor about cosmetic changes that would definitely make this phone design stand out against all former iPhone designs. And we gripe about it...

I was listening to this week's MacBreak Weekly earlier and what Leo and crew said makes a lot of sense regarding the longer 4" iPhone rumor -- it will happen b/c LTE has a bigger radio and is a battery sucker. That is to say extra space is needed to make room for a bigger battery and the LTE radio. It won't be wider b/c the width of the current iPhone is perfect for the avg. persons hand.

The problem with this theory is that doesn't the larger screen also take more battery? So you get a larger battery but you also get something else to suck up that battery so I don't really think that putting a larger screen would really add that much of a help for the LTE radio. And I don't think it's that much of a battery hog that it is way more than a screen woudl be, after all the new iPad wi-fi doesn't get much better battery life than the 4G/LTE iPad...

Sigh... I like the size of my current iPhone, I can hit every part of the screen with my thumb.
But the size increase may be inevitable-- but not because they are trying to compete with the latest Android phablets.

I think the current size simply will not allow them to have an LTE chipset and the larger battery required to drive it. So if they want to offer LTE and keep the same battery life, their only option is to increase the size.

Can't wait for it!

I know some rumours often turn out to be complete BS, but I really think this is going to happen. It'll be the first new iPhone I'll ever have as well, as I've been using the 3GS I bought off my brother for the last year.

I just hope it's out sooner rather than later, along with the new MBPs!

Funny thing is, these are all the same rumors we heard last year. I guess we just keep the rumors until they become reality!

put me in the camp of those that find the screen size just fine on the current iphone.

I skipped the 4S and am waiting for the 5 but I don't need or want the large screen real estate.

Take a look at the iPad LTE teardown. It's all battery, and it's more battery than the iPad or iPad 2 but less battery life when LTE is used. It's also heavier than the iPad 2 because of it. It's a well established fact that LTE radios use more power than either GSM or CDMA 3G radios.

Yes, and do you forget the thing that was most outstanding about it? The one that most people were excited about. The retina display that the battery is there more for than the LTE (once again, the wi-fi new iPad doesn't get much more battery life... if it was the LTE eating the battery, you'd expect the wi-fi iPad to be far better). It's not just the LTE that was different from the iPad 2 to the current one.

ONce again, displays take a lot of battery. In general they are the biggest battery hog in a device (why do you think one of the main suggestions for saving battery is putting your brightness down).
