I'd love someone to explain to me this sudden quest for bigger devices nowadays, when not so long ago it was all about making them smaller/lighter/slimmer. The bigger in my pocket, the less happy I am, and I think the current iPhone's screen size should remain a standard.

People are getting older. People with older eyes want to read things on their screen. Geezers have lots of money.

I prefer this other mockup ( found in the verge comments)

I own a Galaxy Note and I can reach the full screen with one hand. Since I'm more interested in having a truly mobile tablet that lets me do my ONE daily phone call than in a phone that can only run a tiny, unusable web browser, I very much prefer the Note's form factor over everything else on the market.

For me, the iPhone is too small. But even if there were a 5.3" version of it available, it would still run a restricted, crippled operating system that would always get in my way with its many unnecessary stop signs.

You must have some freakishly long fingers then, because that atrocity of a device is monstrous in size

There is no taper. The mockup photo is at an angle.

Sorry, my fault for using the wrong terminology! I was (trying to) refer to the bevel (i.e. 'tapering' in from the sides to the front.)

I'm glad the mockup doesn't have the width or depth tapering from top to bottom. That - to me at least - would look ugly and feel awkward in a device that's frequently rotated around in your hands.

It's not that we want bigger devices; we want smaller devices but with bigger screens! We're a tough crowd to please! ;)

Pfft the Galaxy Note fits in normal man pants pockets. Hush up.

Maybe you should re read what you quoted then tell yourself to hush up. He's saying 4ft 3 inches wouldn't fit someone accidentally typed 4 ft not 4 inches that's why he's saying that definitely wouldn't fit...

How is that an improvement for anything other than watching HD movies maybe? It wouldn't make it easier to read websites or use certain apps. I really think if the screen is going to get bigger they will keep the same aspect ratio.

That's what I'm saying lol Keep the aspect ratio.

i never use my phone with one hand, grip is horrible. id drop it in no time

ANYWAY, finally a bigger screen (NOT phone) ... hopefully. its 2012, i dont want to use a game boy in 2012 either

Worst mockup ever! I don't know who decided they just wanted to add a couple mm's to the top and bottom but that makes for a horrible screen size! It needs to increase in both width and length! I can't wait for a 4" screen, same aspect ratio!

Indeed, Galaxy Note is a humongous phone. More importantly, if the rumored 7.85" iPad Mini with minimum bezel at $250-ish is real, there might not be enough room for a large iPhone like that.

To the people who don't think increasing just the height will work, have you forgotten about this?

Personally I'm not that big on increasing just the height because 1) portrait virtual keyboard won't be any easier to type on 2) it's awkward on landscape for anything other than movies.

However it does let Apple to pack more screen space into a similarly sized form factor so they might do it that way. I'm very curious to find out what aspect ratio this 4" screen will be.

Crippled software and stop signs?
Hahahahaha I think you are talking about your own phone
I don't remember having a problem with any "crippled" software or seeing any stop signs in the last 5 years I've had an iPhone
Last I checked the only flawed, unstable, and extremely badly copied software is android

Who the hell uses phones that can't fit in pockets
And tablets that are too damn small to do anything with? And all that with a STYLYS
Lmao no that is too much for me

What ever screen size the next iPhone gets , the ipod touch will get as well.

Wonder wtf gives you that idea

Looks ugly IMO.

Happy with how it is, if they're going to make it 4 inches long and the same width why not make is 100 inches long and then it doubles up as a single bed....

Quite

I hope it's 4.3 inches. Solely because I want to see the 'No! Never! I'm not getting a phone with a screen bigger than 3.5 inches! AppletillIdiezomg, dinner plates, snowboards, garage doors and other hyperbolic comparisons' will look more daft than they already do.

I for one switched from android when the screen sizes got too big to be comfortable. If apple go in that direction, I will upgrade to a 4s and reassess the market in year or two.

In addition, consider the following...

Just a real quick note to all those complaining about a bigger screen...YOU ARE IN THE MINORITY! The iPhone, as it is currently constructed looks like a fisher price toy.

Hyperbole is merely a method by which people communicate, and flows in all directions. Try not to get too worked up about it :)

Smaller was in the days of just using a phone to talk, some texting and you had a physical keyboard. Now with all the web interfaces a larger screen is helpful.

A slightly bigger phone will still fit in your pocket and hardly be noticeable.

My iPhone 4 fits nicely in my pocket of the pants style that I wear to work. I think the extra half an inch would make the phone too large, therefore relegating it to my purse, making it less accessible, less useful. I have been waiting for the 5, so if they are going to a larger screen, I wish they would just tell us now, then I could buy the 4S instead.

If I wanted a larger screen, I would buy an iPad... oh wait, I have an iPad... It's in my purse. ;P

The Specs you mentioned, 432 ppi, is not possible on such a small screen(for now).
Why not? I'm not saying Apple should go with that. But it seems you are discussing technical details. And LCDs can go way into the 4 digits ppi today, so....
Good lord a 4 ft 3 inch screen? You probably want the phone thinner than .001cm too right?
Just roll it up to fit in your pocket.
i never use my phone with one hand, grip is horrible. id drop it in no time
So, you talk on the phone with both hands up at one ear holding it? You must get strange looks.
