I've seen other platforms that are pretty much plug and play. Ring for one. I'm hoping Matter will resolve the connection issues when adding devices. Having to rescan or reenter every device after an update is stupid. I'd like to see on my screen,'i see you added another device to your home, would you like to connect' and be done with it by pressing YES.

They pulled it so quickly that they must be pretty serious. Usually Apple will let things like this linger for a while and stonewall while they work on a fix. Someone likened it to the Maps debacle and I think that’s apt. This is a bigger screw up than usual.
I’ve been noticing that Apple mainly only fixes bugs when they’re reported by the mainstream tech media sites. The sites are mainly reporting what’s being posted on Reddit, for the most part. This has been plastered all over the tech media right before Apple pulled it.

MKBHD just did a Voice Assistant comparison and placed Siri at #2 behind the GA. Basically, he just #%?!ed us lol. If he says Siri is alright, Apple won’t fix it even it’s been a steaming pile of donkey dung.

This was exactly my problem too. Like you, narrowed it down to the AppleTV, unplugged it, tada…. Everything has worked smoothly since. It works out really, ‘cause I was looking for a new paperweight.
I have the same issue, but with my OG HomePods. Every time my devices go into “Updating…” mode, I kill the power to my HomePods and within a minute, my AppleTV has taken over and my devices are working as expected again.

No offence, but I have the slight impression that with your few HomePods and one Apple TV as your only accessory, you have absolutely no idea how complex home automation can grow.

And with “complex” I mean also its maintenance, updates and troubleshooting of multiple hubs, accessories of different manufacturers.
To be fair, going from the existing morass to a full MatterThread compliant system is likely going to be problematic. I have multiple bridges and components. I fully expect to have to reset everything when I migrate to the new system, and possibly replace certain components. It's the way it has been since the 1990s, so why would you expect anything different now? At least we hopefully finally have a serious contender for the unified protocol. I would love to get rid of a few bridges.

Exactly this. I don't update ANYTHING anymore. Not my PCs, macs, iphones, watch, not ANYTHING.

All updates now are about monitization, and monetization only, in any way possible. If they can get one extra penny out of you by removing a feature they'll do it, customer be damned. They HATE their customers. Amazon music app taking away the thumbs down button was the last straw.

As more and more people start to get a clue and quit updating, they're going to start forcing the updates or bricking devices that refuse to update.

Try guessing how long it is before posessing a dangerous non-updated device is a crime.
I hope when you stopped updating you turned the internet off on your device as well. Updates are not solely about money, security is a pretty big part of that as well. So anytime you don't update you are just leaving yourself open to some other much worse thing happening.

I’m not having any issues on 16.3b1 and Homebridge, even with invitations.

My thoughts on Thread/Matter, home automation, and IoT in general.

No, they haven't and it isn't.
Yes, they have. Its infuriating. After days of troubleshooting I was finally able to add my spouse to the home, only to learn the automations to adjust the thermostat when nobody is home, no longer work. They royally F'ed up this rollout and someone should lose their job over it. How is it possible this many people are having this many issues? Answer: It wasnt sufficiently tested for quirks before the rollout. After spending probably tens of thousands on Apple products, I'm beyond disappointed. What a crock.

HomeKit secure video is still not back. HomeKit simply fails to recognise that all members of the home are away to trigger recording mode of the camera. That’s extremely stupid and Apple is not fixing it.

Anyone having issues with automations working at a second home location?
I'm having issues with automations working at my only home location. It's as if Homekit is unable to see where the users assigned to the home are. Automations dont activate if people leave or return, despite the fact I have automations that should be triggered when people arrive/leave. I spent two hours on the phone with apple and they cant figure it out either. Same old BS line that the engineers will get back to me. Wont hold my breath...

Is Google or Alexa any better,? I have two smart bulbs that’s it, I can easily switch platforms. They are just not reliable since the new iOS 16.

In the middle of the night, the lightbulbs will just turn on. I also noticed a couple times where the Apple TV will pause what I’m watching and the light turns off.

My 2 smart lightbulbs worked perfectly and flawlessly on iOS 15. Since iOS 16, they turn off and on randomly, and my measly 5 automations are not reliable.

I have deleted all automations and re-done them multiple times, and logged in and out of my iCloud account on my apple tv.

Apple today published a support document designed to help those who are having issues with HomeKit, outlining what to do if you can't access a home or accept an invitation in the Home app.

homekit-showdown-2-thumb.jpg

Apple says that on an iPhone or iPad running iOS 16.2 or iPadOS 16.2, users should use the Remove Home option on any listed homes that don't have accessories. If the invited user has a home with accessories, Apple support must instead be contacted for help.

If there is a home with no accessories listed, after it is removed from the Home app, the invited user and home owner's devices need to be restarted, as do all Apple TV and HomePod devices in the home.

From there, the home owner will need to remove any pending invitations to the invited user, and then re-invite the user to share control of the home. An invited user must accept an invitation to access a home within three hours or the invitation will expire.

Apple's instructions come just a day after the new Home architecture that was introduced in iOS 16.2 was pulled. At the current time, Apple is not allowing users to upgrade to the architecture, likely due to multiple bugs that users have reported with the update.

Issues with the architecture update include ‌HomeKit‌ devices stuck in an "updating" or "configuring" status, devices going missing, HomeKit Secure Video not working, and invitations to share the Home with other users failing, which is what the support document addresses.

In a separate support document, Apple says that the new Home architecture will be reintroduced at a later date, and that it has been temporarily removed.

Still crushed. I have several hundred smart devices, thread, matter, z-wave, hubs and more. Thread is shot. I can’t downgrade. I tested 16.3 beta upgrade in hopes of shaking something loose. Same results. Just sit and wait for anything to happen. I’m beat with adding and removing items.

I can't use ****. I just moved and at my old place, after the 16.2 update I got a message saying my watch wasn't compatible and couldn't upgrade, but it upgraded everything anyway and it worked, but more sluggish.

At my new place it doesn't work at all. As soon as my HomePods are set up via HomeKit as a stereo pair the internet goes nuts and nothing in the house connects correctly. I can't even use a smart plug via HomeKit.

The network itself is ruled out as the problem it's literally whatever HomeKit is doing. I really hope for an update soon.
