If the notch is located in an additional screen estate area where the right icons of the menu bar will sit above the menu bar of the app, then it could work. In fact it's the only way it could work. No graphics/video pro users would accept a notch eating an area where a full screen image would be. ( Rich Instagram influencers that absolutely need a 3000$+ MBP to post their private island vacations photos might accept it though)
Full screen apps do not show the menu bar. You need to move your mouse to the top to have it show.

i hate thick bezels but you can still have bezels. i love my ipad pro. the bezels are not offensive. i'm glad they didn't put a notch on that. that said, i don't mind a notch. my iphone has one and it doesn't bother me in the slightest.

if apple put a notch on the macbook pro then fine. it's nothing to cry or piss and moan about.

I am not at my comp right now to confirm but I believe it is possible to have the menu bar be persistent while in full screen in Monterrey.

That is a serious regression to macOS and I do NOT want that. That better not be the case, I activate a full screen mode for it to be FULL screen. I don't want the menu bar to be forced to come back.

I suspect that the extra space up top, whatever they call it will be configurable to either go black or dim when in full screen. Maybe a hover over would perk it back up, like if you want to see what time it is while your full screen show is playing.

Am I missing something?

According to the text in the patent the screen at both sides of the notch are not part of the main screen area, will be always black and are only used to display information (e.g. clock , battery status, etc.). So you can free space in the main screen area! So it seems like the menu will be below the notch, as usual, and the notch will not interfere with the normal screen.

So I don't see the problem at all! and since the new MacBook Pros are supposed to use mini led, the background of the extended region can be made pitch black!

Seems like a good use of otherwise unused space, if is implemented as described in the patent.
Who doesn't love losing active content area, if the horizontal notch area is always black then you're not using all of the display. The only way I see it is by them sticking to the 16:10 aspect ratio, but with the notch the active content is realistically 16:9.

Earlier stories on this indicate that the bar/notch area is over and above the 16-10 and does not impact that ratio.

The notch rumor is coming to fruition, but the rumor I care about the most (120hz) is dead silent 😭

Then its not a full screen experience. Full screen applications/experiences on Windows don't show the task bar.
