I thought the premium prices for the hardware partly took care of that.
And the premium developer-accounts.
And the 15%/30%-app-store-cuts.
At the beginning of the year it was reported that Apple paid out 60 billion dollars to app-store-developers.
So Apple's cut made something between 10 (15%) to 25 billion (30%) dollars just from the app-store.
In one year.
Does the app-store really, REALLY, cost that much and more in maintenance, support, improvement, app-reviewing etc.?

Well...

Do children see the gambling ad, or is it only adults who see the gambling ad? That would be my next question.

Very soon the company will automatically save ads to your quick notes of Notes app. Notifications, Lock Screen/Home Screen widgets with ads which cannot be turned off. Ads everywhere on the screen.

You at first were asked to pay an expensive device, now the price is more and more expensive (Pro/Ultra models, price increases). You used to pay to buy apps, but now Apple forced apps to force people to subscribe. Free applications like Notes, Pages will be needed for subscription first with more and more ads.

Tim Cook used to say customers of free services are products. Now when we pay more and more, we are still products and even toys for Apple to manipulate.

Privacy issues are also the same ways. Well done Tim Cook!

Sadly, people have been happy to accept google and facebooks business model for years, it ain’t going to change just because apple got into the same thing.

We either have to stop using the offending products, or accept it.

If we could make the advertising business model unprofitable, it will go away.

I don't mind an AD in the main menus as long as they are relevant and appropriate to what I am looking for or interested in. However, I don't want to see any ADs within a specific Apps page. This just reminds me of all those old dodgy sites with ADs posing as download links for genuine products on the genuine page.

I love how advertising, as always, turned instantly to bad.

It's like everyone know it was coming but some death march for this project at Apple pushed it out anyway.

This App Store...

How is it possible - after all these years - that it still doesn't remember or show my recent searches, and that I am not able to bookmark apps I'd like to get back to later.

And why on earth I cannot sort apps and games by release date....
I want to look at the newest weather apps, for example - no way to do it.

I hate this, to be honest.

It tells me Apple isn't securing the advertisers they thought they'd get. I hope it's this in a way and not that they are prioritising shady businesses over those which are more Apple-friendly. The whole episode is bizarre and makes you wonder who is in charge of this area.

Screw you Apple! You dare show gambling ads on my sons iPad and you have lost all respect from me!

Apple need to realise that gambling apart from being a sad addiction for some people is also against certain religions.
It would be interesting to know if your sons iPad did show gambling ads. Does it have the appropriate parental controls in place?

Of course, it’s locked down, he even has to request to get any non-educational app time.

I didn’t get a chance to check the App Store before this all kicked off but ethically they can’t, can they?

First we, Apple users, laugh at the hellhole that is the Google Play Store. And now we also have plenty of scam apps and cheap looking ads for gambling apps.

Thanks Apple. I feel great about buying into your luxurious walled ecosystem. This is nothing more than a quick money grab that cheapens your entire brand. While not being able to keep the bad stuff out of the store, as previously promised.

Very bad marketing.
Well said. The original idea of the App Store, as sold to audience, was this is a curated space so the apps are high quality and not nefarious. That’s eroded overtime. Ads absolutely cheapen the space.

I believe parental controls would apply to the age restrictions for apps in the App Store, which should mean an under 18 never sees apps or ads for apps designed for 18+. That’s my thinking anyway.

You would hope so.

There is still the religion question though. Can see this getting major kickback from the Middle-East etc.
That’s an impossible ask given apps aren’t (and probably should never be) classified by religious suitability. Those who don’t want or believe in gambling should simply ignore those ads, or petition their governments to make gambling advertising illegal.

I thought about the same thing. I imagine there are other kinds of apps that are culturally inappropriate besides gambling ones.

Still a pretty crappy move though by a company that has until now pushed privacy and not using the user for monetary gain.

We pay the Apple premium for the products so we don’t have to be exposed to this stuff.
Sadly, the world accepts the google and Facebook business model. And regulators are pushing ’big tech‘ to operate more like google and Facebook by eliminating vertical integration in some markets.

It was inevitable that Apple would eventually succumb to that lucrative advertising money, especially when they are being forced to change their business model. This is why we can’t have nice things, there’s always someone who wants to spoil it.

We can only hope one day advertising gets outlawed globally, but there’s very little chance of that.

Well, we all know the world is pretty messed up right now, so doesn’t say much.
