Of course Apple is not forced to place its ads anywhere, but the self-censorship of every ad-dependent business just to please advertiser has become a giant problem for free speech. Youtubers can't even use certain words that are in any way related to sex or rape. Otherwise their videos are demonetized.

To save free speech either ads have to be made illegal completely (my preferred option) or there has to be a way to make sure that the advertiser has no way to influence where his ads appears. If that was clear, people would know that an ad is not an endorsement of the platform or website they are on.

It’s surprising to see a significant number of comments here reflecting a lack of awareness and understanding on this topic.

It's pretty simple, actually.

Twitter/X, like all publicly visible companies, is communicating its values through its actions. Some of those actions are through the types of people and content it expressly allows to exist on its platform, the types of ads it'll run, and the postings and comments of its new owner.

People and companies are freely able to decide if they want to use that service and/or if they want to be associated with those expressed values. More and more people and companies are deciding they don't want to associated with such.

It's really that simple: Twitter/X is speaking loudly through its actions to the ideals it represents. It's fully in the right to be able to do this. As a consequence, users/companies are speaking through their actions that they don't want to be associated with those ideals. They are similarly in the right to be able to do this.

Free speech isn't just the purview of companies offering services. It's also the purview of the users of those services. Twitter/X bemoaning these latest actions as an assault on free speech is narcissistic and hypocritical in the extreme; free speech doesn't require that the people exercising it do it to the benefit of Twitter/X.
