just got off apple chat..... another bungled launch by apple

if Steve were alive heads would be rolling
I feel your pain. But jobs has been gone for 6 years. It’s time to stop using that phrase. 2017 apple is not steve jobs Apple anymore. It’s Tim Cook and team that make Apple what it is. We are all so accustomed to instant gratification that having to wait a few extra days to spend money seems a tad over the top. Everything will be ok. In perspective people don’t have clean water or food in the world.

Keep trying--it took me about 10 tries to get through the "server jam"--but it finally did go through

I've tried at least 20x in a row...no dice. Again, not the biggest deal. I'm not keen on giving Apple my debit card/bank account number, and I'm not fond of the 3% fee for credit cards either (although that is a lot better than what I'm paying most times to take money out of a cash machine).

Oddly enough I managed to get Apple Pay Cash activated on my iPhone X and one of my iPads before they disabled new activations. It's working fine on those two but I have a second iPad where the toggle is not showing up anymore. I think it's a safe bet that they'll get everything working properly within the next 24hrs.

Some interesting things about using Apple Pay Cash with multiple devices that I've noticed:
  • Your AP Cash balance is shared across all of your devices.
  • Verifying your identity by taking pictures of your photo ID and entering your social security number only needs to be done once on your account, not on each individual device.
  • When you add a bank account to withdraw money from AP Cash, that bank account is shared between devices, so you can easily withdraw from any device.
  • Funding AP Cash is done through Apple Pay, and uses the cards you have added locally on that device. The card you're using to fund AP Cash is NOT shared between devices - in my case I had to add my debit card to each of my iOS devices so I could send money using them.
  • You must activate Apple Pay Cash on each device you intend to use it on separately, and each device is issued a different virtual debit card number (in my case from Discover Debit) when it is activated.
  • The AP Cash card does not show up or work at all on Apple Watch at the moment - even if you've enabled it on other devices, and presumably will not until the watchOS 4.2 update is released.
The fact that the AP Cash virtual debit card is issued by Discover probably means you won't be able to pay with AP Cash anywhere Discover isn't accepted.
I didn’t have to take a photo of my ID to verify. Just four digits of ssn and a couple of questions about my address. Got it set up on my phone but iPad and my wife’s phone don’t have the option (I guess they are done letting people in today).

Right, mine asked for first/last name and last 4 of social first, and then asked me for my full social security number, and THEN to upload photos of my photo ID which was verified (probably automatically?) in a few seconds. It will likely need different information for different people depending on how they verify identities, I suspect it was having trouble matching me against their database.

Also of note, none of this was required to start using AP Cash, it was an extra button on the AP Cash card info section that I chose to fill out (Something along the lines of "Verify Your Identity") - it probably lifts some sort of daily limit like other companies do.

Probably you seem sort of suspicious :)

But does everyone really need Apple Cash RIGHT NOW that bad? Are you really on the edge of your seats to send money to someone, as soon as you can, on iMessage?

Does Apple really need to announce and brag about Apple Cash RIGHT NOW that bad? Are they really on the edge of their seats for you to send money to someone, as soon as you can, on iMessage?

Apple should **** until they actually have something that works.

PayPal has a very direct way to choose which of multiple sources I can tap to send money. It's essentially one click during the process. Apple provides NO WAY to interact with your account vis a web browser, it's locked behind iTunes. Yes I can change my ONE method to draw on, but it's cumbersome and takes a bunch of extra time.

Kinda agree, I'm getting tired of them announcing new features and then delaying them for months. If the feature isn't going to be ready by iOS 11 then don't tell everyone it's part of iOS 11. If it's something you're working on for a few months after iOS 11 releases, then just tell us it will be coming later. The HomePod delay really disappointed me. Apple is just missing its own deadlines and that is irritating no matter what company it is.

Something else interesting (though somewhat expected) is if you go to pay for something on macOS Safari using AP Cash (via iPhone) it will only let you do so if the card has a sufficient balance (it will literally say insufficient balance). It will not automatically reload or top up the balance for you - you have to do that beforehand.

By extension, if you want to use the AP Cash card to pay for something at a brick-and-mortar store via Apple Pay you'll have to have the full balance available before trying to complete the transaction.

Personally, I will never pay with my AP Cash balance in the same way that I would never buy something with a debit card - you miss out on loyalty points. Anything anyone sends me via AP Cash I will withdraw to my bank account and then use my credit cards to pay for things.

It would be very convenient if they let you automatically withdraw your AP Cash balance but I don't see it happening - Apple is going to encourage people to use their AP Cash card to pay for things because they collect (most of) the fee from the merchant for using the card, and get nothing for bank transfers.

Is it out yet? Still no Apple Pay Cash on my iPhone X (running 11.2).

No. If my own personal experience with Apple roll-outs is any guide I will be the very last person to be allowed to activate.

There were iPhone Xs on the local Apple store shelves before mine finally arrived. I would have bought one, but wasn’t allowed to cancel my existing order.

Re-read the article. It states that Apple Pay Cash is in the process of rolling out. Some people have it already, some are still waiting.

Amusingly, Apple Pay Cash is available for my iPad, but yet not for my iPhone. I'm guessing it'll show up on the latter device in the next twenty-four hours.

Which flatly contradicts the article headline.
That's why one needs to read the article. Sometimes the headlines are misleading, not just here at MacRumors, but pretty much any media outlet on the Internet.

"Apple Pay Cash is just now rolling out, so it may take a bit of time before it's fully functional and available for everyone."

That seem pretty clear to me.

Well, but even the *article* says it’s universally available.

Apple today made Apple Pay Cash officially available in the United States, so it can be used by all iPhone and iPad owners who have iOS 11.2 installed.

That contradicts the portion quoted earlier in the article.

So I guess the takeaway is that the article is just ****** journalism.
