But why are you in an Apple Pay Speculation discussion then, if you don't think Apple Pay will start any time soon? :D
Because it is interesting to read and I’m getting notifications when there are new posts in this thread :D
And what does your logic say that you come to this conclusion?
Germany is the most important country that not have AP. Why should they release it without announcing it and why didn’t they announce it last week at the conference call when it comes in the near future?

Why? To early facts about new channels at Unitymedia? Probably the channel launches month later after that. Money, money money... Just one example.

Ok, the other way round... why should they announce it offhand in a subclause during a telco? if it's so important, a press release would be the right way. and that will be the way it goes.

Absolutely no source? Ok. I´ll continue to trust sunny2k1 until March is over.

You know first he told us Apple Pay will launch in several countries in February. Should be announced on earnings call. Did not happen. Then there should be a slow roll out this week. And now we are talking about a March release.

You know what guys? I think maybe it is an April release. But it could be rolled out in May or June as well. Perhaps it is July.

Truth is it is like yeahtyeaht says. It’s very unlogical for Apple to launch Apple Pay in Germany as of right now. Like I said as well many times before now too. It does not make any sense to announce Brazil and then launch it elsewhere. And what are the chances of Apple pulling the release twice just hours before it should actually launch.

I want Apple Pay too but I’m trying to see it as clearly as I can and what is more likely? That Apple will make some magical slow roll out of AP or that sunny just fooled all of us?

BTW im Running iOS 11.3 and mo sign of a slow roll out.

The only way all this would make sense is if Apple wanted to save a big Apple Pay Expansion announcement for a March event (on which they could update possibly a Mac, bring out the SE 2, release iOS 11.3). But that would mean Brazil would need to launch very soon for that to be a possibility.

They love the applause and would get more media attention than a quarterly earnings call. Hmm...

March event, Apple conference room
- Tim Cook back on stage after announcing some cool updates:
"Next, let's talk about Apple Pay. Apple Pay is doing tremendously well and we couldn't be happier with the response. Our vision to replace the wallet is well underway." (goes over a few cool statistics, talks about how cool Apple Pay cash in iOS 11 is, compares it to how Google is doing with their wallet mess).
"We couldn't be happier with the momentum for Apple Pay. (pauses) But we're not stopping here! We have some big news to share with you today! We are announcing the biggest expansion to Apple Pay, since the introduction of Apple Pay!"
(a map appears with Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Poland, Austria, etc. behind him).

Tears of joy here, on Twitter and wherever needy Apple fans are waiting to use their NFC chip!

:D

EDIT: By the way Apple announced that the HomePod is coming to Germany in Spring! And we're also still waiting for the AirPad (AirMat or whatever that Qi thingy is called) and new AirPods (at least the case). So there is some stuff we're still waiting for!

Slow roll out for many people this week and start in March. That is what sunny2k1 said. He said March, when he was still posting here.

Oh! Tim, is it you?!:D:D:D

I know there could be a lot of other causes, but I wanted to share this with you and I'm clinging to this straw as I want Apple Pay in Germany so bad...

Sparkasse just released an update for their app which is larger than the original app. So lots of changes, possibly including Apple Pay preparations?

I got the update today too. It could mean everything and nothing.
[doublepost=1517849893][/doublepost]
Hmmm. Would there be anything ApplePay related that could be in an own App? Don‘t think so.
Maybe yes. The Apple Pay symbol as one example and God knows what else.

Don’t think it means something. Won’t be Apple like when you have to scan ur card in the wallet app and have kinda authenticate it using the banking app.

What do u thin would the banking apps come in use when thinking bout Apple Pay? And just for Germany/Europe? Adding cards not scanning them, but adding them from banking app to wallet? Would be completely different to now...

Yes? Look at this: https://www.nordea.fi/en/personal-customers/everyday-finances/cards/apple-pay.html

Plus: one user talked about Italians being able to add their Maestro cards to Wallet because there is a specific number printed on them. In Germany, thats not the case and only the banks know this number, so I would suspect that adding Maestro cards or girocards would have to be accomplished through the banking apps. (if Maestro/girocard support for Apple Pay is coming to Germany)

Interessting point. Always wondered how cards are being authorised for usage with Apple Pay. Challenge and Response via snail mail wouldn‘t be apple like

It wouldn’t be different at all. Even now, there are different ways how you can add your card to the Wallet app, just like the user above mentioned. Almost every bank that supports Apple Pay also supports adding cards directly to Apple Pay from their banking app. This is done in order to shorten the process of adding the card because the users don’t have to manually type in all of the infos and then use another authentification measure as well, e.g SMS message/mobileTAN, opening their banking app etc.

Exactly.
It was me btw.
But, even though Italian Maestro/V Pay cards do have the PAN card number printed on them, their banks still offer apps which allow the users to add cards directly to Wallet without any additional authentication needed.

This is where I sometimes get really frustrated with German banks or debit cards. The majority of them are Maestro, which DOES support online payments, but because the standard card number (17-19 digit in the case of maestro) and the CVV security code are not printed on the card, you’re basically being left out of this feature with no logical reason other than banks wanting to get you to pay for extra MasterCard or Visa cards to be able to pay online.

One app screenshot is from iPhone and the other from an iPad, right?

I have Sparkasse+ and the app hasn’t changed its size after the update. Sorry...

No, both Screenshots are from my iPhone. I just cropped the second picture...

Thank you for all that input. That way the apps have to be updated.

But do you think that it would be possible that all banks update their apps to be ready for Apple Pay and no information gets leaked? Ppl doing that apps are kinda nerdy and I think we would have a few more sources of information? Even though there will be NDAs

But tbh: it’s a really big coincidence that a lot of banking apps getting updates atm... and that new EU rules for banking are already active and wouldn’t need updates for the banking apps.

So it must be something going on which is touching a lot of different players on the market

Ok but you must be on iOS 11.3 Beta, right? Up to 11.2.5 the file sizes aren't shown on updates page.

A question to those more knowledgable about the Sparkasse's background: All banks (usually county or town wide) are independent, but their infrastructure is basically identical, right?
As far as I know the backend of the online banking system is identical, the card issuer is (always?) BayernCard Services for MasterCard and SV (or whatever they're called) for the Girocard. So if the Sparkasse was able to align themselves in the whole of Germany to prepare for contactless payments (see them rolling out Girocard Kontaktlos from July 2017 at all Sparkassen, Android Wallet within the Sparkasse app as they have announced from July this year), then maybe it is on the cards. To be honest, there is no real definitive payment option for Android, so it would make sense for the Sparkasse to develop their Wallet within the app. That could also be transferred to iOS. Keep your card within Sparkasse+ and add to your iOS Wallet...

It would be possible, of course. Usually, when a banking app gets updated to support adding cards to Apple Pay, it the states in the App Store that it supports Wallet, which is where the cards get saved to of course. But we have the best example right now that everything can be kept secret: the French Bank Société Générale is right now in the phase of preparing a rollout of Apple Pay for their users. Their App does support adding cards to Apple Pay, but it doesn’t state so in the App Store because officially, it hasn’t started offering it yet. But there are people who have been able to add cards to Apple Pay despite the Bank not launching it officially yet. It even says in the app “your card has been activated for Apple Pay”. There are screenshots showing it.

As far as I know Sparkasse has only one solution for their IT. So it is possible that one huge step is needed to get AP working for Sparkasse customers.

VRBank has at least two systems. Kinda split north and south. So they would have to implement it twice.

My info is several years old, may have changed.

So, let’s hope... I think it is something very simple keep that “works with wallet” or “works with Apple Pay” hidden, cause Apple is working with them directly to get all this done. It’s not a normal app, function or framework everyone can use to implement the back part of Apple pay

Almost all Sparkassen use the same technological backend system, including card payment processing, card issuing etc. afaik, there are only a dozen exceptions that don’t use the same system.

What this means is that IF even one Sparkasse gets support for Apple Pay, it would mean that the backend system is able and ready to process those kinds of payments as well that it is connected to Apple’s system which is necessary for cards to be added to the Wallet app.

If the rest of the Sparkasse then don’t offer Apple Pay it simply means they are not willing to flip a simple switch for whatever silly reason they seem to think is reasonable.

Yeah, it’s the same with not accepting credit cards from ing-diba or dkb on their ATMs in some regions...
